maybe diffuse your shadow a bit more? looks a bit sharp to me.

Plus, the shadow should have a bit more angle - if you imagine the cats front left leg at 12 o clock, a natural light source (from higher up) would not cast a shadow parallel to it - perhaps something more at 2 o clock or so.

I have an old fashioned technique for doing this if you want to know (you probably know how anyway)

Shadows I am not arsed about at present, just chucked them in there quickly (However go'ead with the technique anyway)

Was mainly worried about the edges of the actual legs on the cats. Hoping I haven't gone from too jagged to toooooooo smooth.

selection like that is a bitch. No way you'll ever get round hair selections without a specialist filter.

To create a fairly realistic cast shadow, create the selection as a layer, make the selection, create a new layer, fill the selection black, deselect, place the black layer below the image layer, distort the shape to where you want the shadow, turn the layer opacity down, multiply the layer and apply a gaussian blur of how much you need - should create a decent, more realistic looking cast shadow. (though the secret is in how well you distort it)

Quick question......for my sanity.
Been working on my selection techniques, have found the 'refine selection' in CS3 has helped loads.
However with the technique I feel I am losing a lot of the edge and making the subject look too flat, with the 1st it in more obvious but hopefully less so with the 2nd.........Or am I just being too hard and pedantic on myself?

Please note, that the shadow work on both need work :wave

See examples below:
The shadows on Lucas's head don't match--in the photo they're to his right, outside the photo, the shadow is to his left. A fatter shadow to the left of his head would help with the flatness, I think.

There's that one on Wood Street... summin-eye... name escapes me and i keep thinking magic eye and i know it's definitely not that.

It's photography, btw. There's plenty of small venues showing a good range of work, www.artinliverpool.com will have a listing and tell you what's on in the blog.

Can anyone make a .gif for me?

I have a jpeg image (logo) and I want it to rotate 360deg on the vertical!  Basically making it spin.

Difficult to explain until you see it, but can anyone help?

The text is too small and the lines are too thin. Also, the gradient on the ball would prove very difficult for embroidery.

The "football club" part and the text on the pint would just be unreadable, and the thin lines on the ball wouldn't show up.

In principle, though, the idea is sound. Just use a bolder avant garde (perhaps in all caps?) lose the ball, and treat the pint as a single colour - remember the way guinness done it a few years ago - looked like a 7? That, with outlines. Make the endpoints on the ribbon slightly larger, and thicken the lines on it to match the border of the crest, and bold up the "est..." section - perhaps increase the kearning slightly on that bit too.

:wave

All cosmetic stuff really to make it embroider better and clearer.

Lextra that stuff is called.

No chance of a small pub team getting that stuff. It's nice though - CL badges are made from it as well.

Much, much better.

Only concern I would have now is the text at the top - I'd still prefer it a bit thicker / bolder...

Perhaps something like compacta / impact?

Looks good though - much more stylised!

Better?

Better, but the "G" in avant garde doesn\t look quite right.

Possibly a fairly bold helverica?

I'd also go full width and all caps for the football club, and also ful width (as in the larger text)

You could also try optima / albertus for the font - they would both work well too!

Being fussy - the curve of the text doesn't look QUITE right at the top as well - really sholud exactly echo the curve above the text!

(hope all this doesn't sound over critical - it's what I do as a creative director with folks starting off, and find just being direct is the best way!)

That's what I was going to say. Maybe that doesn't matter.
The extra line on the 'pint' is a step in the right direction, but it looks more like a cyclinder from a car engine now.

Note. I am not a creative director, I am talentless b*stard just saying what I see. My criticism is intended purely as constructive and I happily acknowledge that you have more graphic talent in one of your pubes than I have in my whole body.

Couple of quick questions

Why is this thread on the Technology and Science board? Wouldn't Media and Art be more appropriate?

And this one directed at nidgemo, but open to all....
How well defined is 'what looks good'. Things like all upper case, or all lower case. Bigger font, different font, more colour, less colour. Are most of these rules/guidelines ones you've 'taught' yourself during your career, or are they taught at graphic school? Do these rules change over time?  Sorry if this sounds like an accustory/slagging question, but it is borne on the back of genuine curiosity.
