Brad, what about putting http://www.computerarts.co.uk/ into the resources bit, i know it's horribly obvious and everyone will know it, but they do put the tutorials etc up on there with the files so anyone who doesn't buy it can still have a go.

Good shout, am going to go through my bookmarks at some point and link them all :)

A bit late asking the question since I've bought the bloody thing in the first place (at a decent price), but what are peoples thoughts on CS3 Premium Web edition?

The reason I ask is because I haven't used Dreamweaver since v3 or 4 and Photshop since v6.

Just about to get back into web development after an absence of 6 or 7 years - more coding than anything else, but need to be able to tweak graphics, etc, hence need Photoshop as well as being able to quickly put together mockups with Fireworks.

Oh, and PaulF, that VB.net project fell though the floor because of certain new government rules.
"I believed them fellas."
Thank you, Mr. Moores.

Does seem a bit pricey, like, I prefer the 'word of mouth' approach, and having your own site can help, too.

That'd be November, right? Cos er, ya could've give me a bit more notice ;) Nah, it should be fine for me, but give me a reminder nearer the time as I have an appalling memory :wave

Site will cost like £5 for two years with a .co.uk, y'know, just get a domain and then get a free hosting acc with awardspace (no ads, it's pretty quick, file size limit of 500kb which is fine if it's html based).

Will get a website sorted. Was thinking of waiting till I had some structure to my works.

was thinking of www.bradleymadedesign.co.uk as a play on words but wasn't sure if the negative sounding phrasing would work.

Better get the site fixed and re-sliced today then.  :butt

My colleges design exhibition started yesterday and I have already run out of promotional badges. Need to get some more done for the D&AD show in a few weeks. Anyone know any cheap promotional merchandise sites. I might use www.badgesforbands.com, they are pretty cheap. I got the missus to make the last load on a badgemaker. Don't think she will want to spend hours doing them again....

My web monkey is on the case, reslicing it for me. It may not function properly at the moment but at least you can get a brief glimpse of some of my work. As long as I get a 2:1 i'm happy ^_^

Just stick the logo and the other bit in divs and set it's position to 0 on the bottom left for nav and 0 bottom right for the logo, but put a container with a minimum width of the two elements combined so they don't overlap if someone has a really small resolution, could stick a max width if you don't want them to go too far apart either, take about 10 minutes to fix, don't really need to reslice, and then it's a one-size fits all, semi-liquid layout type job.

Can any of you design professionals tell me how to get into the business without a formal qualification. I'm pretty solid in most design apps, programming and the rest. But I don't know how to build a portfolio when i don't have a set goal.

For example an uncle of mines setup a business with another guy but never offered me the contract (i asked both partners). I offered a website, business cards, letterheads and brand identity for free of charge  but never took it.

I know it's hard but if your own kin turn you down it's kinda soul destroying.

EDIT: Fireplace business logo i offered, the one he accepted was from a sign maker, their chosen design? A generic  fire design with  flames, was i trying to be too edgy?

I suffered in a similar way mate. Not family but friends (or supposed friends). Have started something up and then just used a bit of clip art as an ID rather than letting me to it.

Have done full blown corporate ID's for friends of friends, completed the work and never been paid.
It is soul destroying, but just keep going, you do decent work and have a talent. It will work out in the end........

I have to believe that or I might aswell give up now :)

Oh, and PaulF, that VB.net project fell though the floor because of certain new government rules.

No problem. Would these rules have anything to do with not upstaging the new Olympic Logo.

I only came in this thread because I found this wonderfull quote....

Enzo Ferrari said that he was very happy to sit on a committee to agree the design of his Ferraris. But he had two rules: the committee must contain an odd number of members; and that it was to be an odd number less than three.
"All the lads have been talking about is walking out in front of the Kop, with 40,000 singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone'," Collins told BBC Radio Solent. "All the money in the world couldn't buy that feeling," he added.

Actually, CA has just put me onto this: http://poty2007.dcmag.co.uk/ ya can win £15,000!

Have to get my arse in gear and take some sexeh pictures.

There are some lovely photographs in there.
How 'subjective' is judging for a thing like this? Of the few I've seen the one of Melbourne stands out, as does the beach huts. But I love the vibrancy and light of cities at night and the beach huts revive childhood memories. But that doesn't make the photos any 'better' than a lot of the others.

Quick question......for my sanity.
Been working on my selection techniques, have found the 'refine selection' in CS3 has helped loads.
However with the technique I feel I am losing a lot of the edge and making the subject look too flat, with the 1st it in more obvious but hopefully less so with the 2nd.........Or am I just being too hard and pedantic on myself?

Please note, that the shadow work on both need work :wave

maybe diffuse your shadow a bit more? looks a bit sharp to me.

Plus, the shadow should have a bit more angle - if you imagine the cats front left leg at 12 o clock, a natural light source (from higher up) would not cast a shadow parallel to it - perhaps something more at 2 o clock or so.

I have an old fashioned technique for doing this if you want to know (you probably know how anyway)
