Tech forum Bargain thread
« on: September 28, 2006, 10:39:59 am »
Think it makes sense to have one specifically for this board. So post any bargains / good deals of a tech/gadget/computerish nature here. Post a link to any sites which are good for tech bargains and we'll collate the links, although a few of them are already listed in the big thread above.

I've just bought a new tft screen but until it arrives I've no idea whether its a bargain or not. So someone else can start.

Cheap places to buy components:

http://www.ebuyer.com A good benchmark site Their customer service is shocking, but they are reliable and fairly cheap. Good for comparison. They have a weekly e-mail of special offers (ebuyer edeals) with some really cheap stuff on - well worth signing up for.
http://www.dabs.com
http://www.scan.co.uk
http://www.savastore.com
http://www.simply.co.uk
http://www.microdirect.co.uk
http://www.overclockers.co.uk
www.komplett.co.uk has been decent in my experience as well
www.cpc.co.uk We're not going to beat ebuyer or dabs on price, but we do have a much larger range (ie. not just computer stuff).
http://www.richersounds.com
http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/ - refurb Apple products at discount prices
http://www.novatech.co.uk/
http://www.aria.co.uk
http://www.jchdirect.com/ - New! Get your supplies from a Rawk member. The more you order the less time he'll have to post shite :P

Media - Blank CDR/DVDR etc...

Ok my 19" widescreen monitor arrived yesterday afternoon, a disgraceful 19 hours after I ordered it. It's rather nice and a good price to boot. It therefore takes pride of place as bargain number one. I got it from Dabs:

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=446N&InMerch=1

at a cost of 129.48 inc vat. There's no DVI cable included so I got the £5 one also from Dabs as well. They'd given me a tenner voucher in recognition of my majestic greatness so I used that to make me even happier.

The monitor itself has a 5ms response time and is very sleek. The buttons are on the side and the speakers at the back so you get a nice streamlined look. Only downside is there's not much play in the adjustable stand and you may need to put it on a monitor stand to get it to a decent eye level. The screen itself is lovely, am running at 1400x900 and its a massive improvement on the old 17" crt. With a new C90 in my walkman and this screen I'm finally at the cutting edge. Word.

Of course the happiness only lasted until I saw this counter offer from Overclockers:

The same monitor, albeit £5 more expensive but with the added incentive of three saucily attired young minxes. Doubtless they're mass produced in China and bits may fall off after extended use but even so this looks a more attractive deal. I've no idea what it would cost at usual market rates to obtain the services of these maidens but no doubt all, most some of you do. I'll hazard a guess that it's more than a fiver so as soon as I've constructed a suitable dungeon abode for them I'll be ordering another monitor.
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs

Armin,

Is the base detachable and do you have VESA mounts on the back of that monitor?  I'm looking for one but I want to get a bracket and hang it on the wall (I need more space on my desk to cover with clutter).

The speakers are mounted on the back so am not sure about a wall mounting. The base is deffo detachable as it was when I got it. Manual is usual Chinese to English gibberish but
but will check out further.

Also a blatant plug for my employers:

www.cpc.co.uk

We're not going to beat ebuyer or dabs on price, but we do have a much larger range (ie. not just computer stuff).

Yep thats another I should already have had in the resource thread. I like the end of line bargain stuff on your site, there's often some really good finds in there. Will do an updated list at the top of this thread at some point.
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs

Ok, have checked this out now. The base is indeed detachable, the mounting arm comes attached to the monitor but can be unscrewed. There's 4 holes on the back in a Vesa formation but not sure whether its 3"x3" or 4"x4" I can measure it however if required, it looks pretty much like others I've seen.

John Lewis would always be my recommendation for plasmas, just because you can normally bully your way to a decent price match and the 5 year warranty is more than worth the difference with internet prices.

Plus reading on AVforums they generally seem more helpful than most if you do encounter a problem

I definitely agree with this, they are (from my own personal experience) very knowledgeable too, gave great advice normally and have a whopping array or TVs out.

I bought my Apple keyboard from John Lewis Online store at 6.30pm, it was at my office before 8am the next morning! You cant argue with that, esp when i had a code for free postage too!

Highly recomend there online store!  8)

Is it time for me to post www.apple.com in here now, before stating that they're not cheap, but they ARE a bargain?

[runs away, laughing manically]

Seriously though - these are extremely hard to beat - I bought a reconditioned last week, and, box aside, I'm fucked if it's not a brand new iPod. Not a mark on it, good as new, and considerably cheaper - with a full year warranty.

Just in case they are I wrote to Apple saying they put me off buying a top spec Macbook Pro. ;)

:D

Now stop it, before we get the thread locked.

Well they got to me :wave

Seriously though. Nidge using the reconditioned section, is it worth getting a macbook from there, when I have the funds. Or is it a dangerous game with something like that?

Not at all - I know 2 people who've bought recondioned macs from it, and I got my ipod from there - and all of us will swear blind that the items we bought were split new.

I'm strongly of the belief that it's hardly used demo machines, unused returns (ordered by mistake etc) and overstock of items coming to the end of their line.

You'll be getting a year AppleCare with the reconditioned one, and then as far as I know, even if you buy a newie you have to extend it after the year if you want anyway, my Mate did anyway and she bought a brand spankingly newie from apple.com about a year and a half ago. Can't see there'd be any difference as regard to buying a new one.

And that - so you'll get exactly what you get with a new machine, except possibly without the box.

Most definitely.  I bought my reconditioned Macbook pro from the apple website in July. Other than the box it came in to say its reconditioned (and a sticker on the underside of the notebook) there wasn't a mark on it.  I'm so pleased I went down this route. I saved at least £500 as the spec I'd bought had been upgraded. Just waiting for the 24inch imac to be in the reconditioned section and I'll be first in the queue - or at least 2nd in line to Nidgemo !!   ;D

Nice one, trying to get into the bargain basement apple store.....

--EDIT--
After looking at the itunes store, I've remembered to see if napster-to-go player prices have fallen to something decent. A 3 month subscription at £15 a month gets you a free player. This is perfect for the way I listen to music. I don't have to keep the CDs and I can listen to loads of different stuff (or keep listening to my fave old tunes) for about the cost of 1.5 albums a month.  I just hope their selection suits me!

I've never used iTunes either, not sure if it works the same.  But yes, you seem to rent all of their music catalogue for £15/month.   I don't know if anything is excluded from the rental scheme, but that would be a bummer.  Once you stop paying them, DRM kicks in and voids your music. No idea what happens to the stuff on your mp3 player, perhaps you have to plug it in once a month to validate the stuff on there?

As long as I can get 85%+ of the stuff I want to listen to that way, it seems a great way to do things. Especially say I hear a track on the radio and want to try the albumn, I can and it wont cost me anything more.

ps - there are of course bits of software that can 'mp3' what's going through your soundcard, so in theory, if you were that way inclined, you could burn the stuff you rented to CD......

--EDIT-- Well at least I think it would be really good if the poxy thing lets me sign in

The same monitor, albeit £5 more expensive but with the added incentive of three saucily attired young minxes. Doubtless they're mass produced in China and bits may fall off after extended use but even so this looks a more attractive deal.

The monitor? or the minxes?

Personally I'd avoid cheap ram as it tends to be faulty but ebuyer's extra value range is cheap.
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs
