What mobile phone?
« on: February 16, 2006, 06:55:11 pm »
This is the time, 3 years on where I need a new mobile... But which one? My needs are these... I like to text, so the phone needs to be quite user friendly for this. Also I keep a large Contacts List on Outlook at work, so I need all of this transferred to the phone... I want a phone for 'phone use' and I am not particularly interrested in a fancy camera or video. So one with good reception is paramount.
Other things... A loud ring, nice tunes on the phone, and a good looker I suppose.
Can anyone recommend one? I was looking at the Sony Ericsson K750i...looks nice. Anyone have one of these phones? Currently I have a SE, so maybe I should stick with the same make... ???

Sony Ericsson K750i is the best phone I've ever had. SE also look to have some nice new phones coming out in the near future.

I've stuck with Nokias for years thinking they were the mutt's nuts. Recently I needed a new phone, mp3 player and a PDA for work and I ended up getting the K750i beacuse it does the blimmin' lot! :D . You can synchronise the phone with MS Outlook (Contacts, appointments, tasks) etc, and expandable memory (up to 2Gb) allows you store as much info as you could realistically need in a phone. You can use any mp3 file you desire as a ringtone, so those nasty tinny noises are now a thing of the past...

Thanks for all your replies...Looks like I am sold for the Sony Ericsson K750i.
Anyway, good review here mate....just what I wanted to hear. Is the synchronization easy to use? I remember on my old T610, it was a pain in the arse. This connection with my address book is very important for my use.

It's really simple. Just load up the drivers and software off the supplied CD and away you go. Offers you simple choices such as timeframes and content you want to syncronise, then, just click OK and it'll transfer either to or from the phone in seconds.

Amazing what you can get when you can moan constructively, just managed to get the w800i from Orange for fuck all, and my line rental halved, all only 7 months into my contract

Used to have a Nokia 7610. Fucking class phone. Even if some on here say its a "birds phone"

Best phone i've ever had was the Nokia 6820. The keyboard alone made it really really show off able.

£40?! that certainly is a bargain my friend. I've got the standard 64MB Card that came with mine, although now you've mentioned it might have a look round on the old eBay myself, did you get it on an auction or buy-it-now? Oh and do you have any links to the one you managed to get if possible so's i can have a look at it? Cheers fella in advance.

Got it on an auction for £30 + £9.99 postage. Was made up. The guy I got it from hasn't got any up at the moment, but it's clearly a grey market import - all the writing on the packet is Japanese. If you do a search on them, there are quite a lot around, but I'd steer clear of the ones which are for sale in Hong Kong etc - you have very little comeback with these. Edit your search for "Based in the UK only", and you are on safer ground.

Is the 2GB card it a Sony one? Not wishing to shit you up or anything, but there's a lot of fake Sony pro-duo cards on the market since PSP's took off:

It is a Sony one, and I checked the guy's feedback before buying. He had 100% after 2000+ transactions, and lots of them said "Genuine Product", which reassured me. Anyway, when it arrived, it was definitely genuine (you can just tell with these things).

Sorry to bump this up but thought it'd be better than starting a new topic. Looking to replace my ancient nokia 3410 and have narrowed it down to the samsung d500 or se k750i. Camera isn't that important but mp3 player, wap and maybe radio are the features I'm looking for. Dont really call or text *that* much so dont mind having a shitty contract but decent phone. Both are the same price from vodafone (100mins, 75 texts, £16 a month +£20 for the handset, 3 months half price - dont really want a cashback deal). From experience which would people reccomend?

Leaning towards the k750i because of the radio, extendable memory and better talk time & battery life, but I've read problems with the joystick? Problems with the dust collecting in the screen with the samsung aswell?

Ta
It's wonderful, it's marvellous, it's 3-3

The screen get's really dirty with the samsung d500 but doesn't seem to collect dust. Not the most user friendly phone though and has a few bugs. Looking forward to getting rid of it when my contract is up. I'd go for the k750i if I were you, certainly wouldn't pay for a d500, you should be able to get it free.

Cheers mate. In what way is it not the most user friendly or reliable? You mean physically or the user interface? Is it possible to use the rest of the phone while using the mp3 player (which I think you can with the k750..)? Also what's the sliding mechanism like, not too fiddly is it?

Sorry for all the questions, will be off to have a look at both phones later but would like to have a few first hand opinions beforehand. Leaning towards the se though at the moment, especially the expandable memory. Ta.

Cheers mate. In what way is it not the most user friendly or reliable? You mean physically or the user interface?
The interface is annoying and not very intuitive for all sorts of things like saving the number of someone who rings / texts you, choosing the person who you are sending a text to, using the WAP browser etc.
It is also (virtually) impossible to get the phone to ring and vibrate at the same time - it's one or the other or vibrate only then ring only.
The main bug I have encountered is that sometimes if someone calls it becomes impossible to answer the phone, reject the call or switch the phone off and it rings and rings for about 2 minutes. This is very annoying in public because you look like an idiot when you keep saying "hello? hello?" and the phone keeps ringing. Admittedly this only happens in really hot, cold or damp conditions.

No problems with the phone physically regarding build quality. Only annoying part is that there is a tiny plastic part that you have to remove to charge the phone and then replace afterwards. This is very easy to lose :(

Is it possible to use the rest of the phone while using the mp3 player (which I think you can with the k750..)?
No. The memory is not huge either and can't be expanded.

Also what's the sliding mechanism like, not too fiddly is it?
No problems there, pretty robust and easy to use. Only time it is annoying was when I was wearing a wooly hat over my ears. I slid the phone up to answer and then accidentally slid it back down when it hit my hat as I put it to my ear. Other than that it's a fairly nice feature but probably a gimmick as it doesn't do anything that green and red buttons don't.

Agreed. Got my D500 a couple months ago on the off peak 750 T-Mobile deal. After only ever having nokia phones for 6 years, it did take a bit of time to get used to. Its not a bad phone by any means but it can be annoying with some of its little interface faults pointed out here.
