My foreign language choice is one for the action film enthusiasts. Starring Chow Yun-fat, Tony Leung and directed by the legendary John Woo, I give you: Hard Boiled

The film is a complex cop thriller worthy of any Hollywood director. Woo takes his trademarks (dual-wielded pistols, slow-motion moves, doves, balletic action) and weaves them into one my my favourite action films ever. It's basically this and Die Hard.

You think of films that have one or two great action set pieces. This film has five or more. Right from the start, with an insane shoot-out in a HK tea house, you can see Woo's guiding hand all over the film. Chow Yun-fat (above with baby) is perfect as Tequila, a cop who crosses paths with a notorious mob boss.

The highlight is a five minute one take shoot out that works its way through different levels of a hospital. Bullets, bodies, explosions, it has it all.

You may have seen things like Face Off and Hard Target from John Woo's Hollywood output, and those are great films, but they pale when compared with Hard Boiled. Don't be put off by the subtitles. You will love it.

Film two.

Les Triplettes de Belleville.

Surely you all knew this was coming.....surely you weren't thinking I would pick American Flyers...

This is a masterpiece of filmmaking.

A film that is strange, whimsical and looks to be filmed in an alien environment that is still familiar. Belleville has an oddness that it carries with an aplomb...the characters appear to be both cute and grotesque at the same time....and still these exaggerations make the animated characters more human than you'd think possible.

Those who've seen this film will attest to the various artists that have influenced Sylvain Chomet, writ large onscreen..Gilliam, Caro, Jeunet, Burton...and for those old enough..Tati and Keaton....and the drawing of the late, great Ronald Searle. The score is..I'd liken it to an off key Reinhardt, it's that....interesting.

I know this film isn't aimed at children, it's a near silent, foreign language movie...yet children always love this film when they're shown it. And that's why it follows on from the previous film.

Black and white: Night of the Hunter

If you haven't seen this, you should. It's a dark, dreamlike fable that's filmed like a children's book in silhouette - visually, it's about as stark and beautiful as monochrome gets - and the subject matter isn't much lighter. A couple of children are menaced by Robert Mitchum in probably his defining role, as the most malevolent preacher this side of Carnivale. It's influenced a lot of stuff, but it's still incredibly individual:

Robocop (original version, obviously)

Marking the first film in Paul Verhoeven's Hollywood golden era, Robocop was described by Verhoeven as his vision of the American Jesus, which if you've seen it is both true and hilarious. Like all his Hollywood movies, Robocop is a viciously biting satire on American culture (for Robocop it's corporate power and politics) dressed up as a genre film, in this case a pumping action film in which Murphy - the model cop - gets horrifically killed, and for his efforts, resurrected by sinister corporation OCP as a crime fighting cyborg.

You can really tell Verhoeven has a background in low-budget horror because the effects are brilliantly visceral and the details are great: ED-209's roar, the wet patch forming on the crotch of the panicked exec as he hurries to get out of the men's room before Dick Jones comes in, the way people get shot and it looks like their organs are exploding. And that's before you get to the lines: "Can you fly, Bobby?" "I'll buy that for a dollar!" "Bitches leave!" I mean, how awesome (and NSFW) is ED-209?

My next film is animated. By hand. In plasticine. Frame-by-frame.

It's Wallace & Gromit: The Wrong Trousers.

Not only is it tremendously funny, it has characters we love and that actually have character.

It has drama...

And action set-pieces to rival any Hollywood blockbuster.

And all created in Bristol by Nick Park and the Aardman Animations team.
