No doubt in my mind that he deserves it, he's grown to become the best defender in the world and no one's near him for the award.

Congrats to the big fella! I get the same sense of awe with him as I used to feel with peak Torres and Suarez, a real sense of pride that one of the best players in the world is representing the team I support.

Raheem Luther King is a shoe-in

Not sure what he's done about racism either. Yes, he spoke out about being abused, but so did Danny Rose and I don't see people falling over themselves to praise him as much

Sterling hasn't even improved his productivity from last season to this season...just got up there on media hype. Scored 18 goals 11 asssits last season and 17 goals 10 assists this season with similar game time. Last season he also scored many important late goals but perhaps this season because there's an actual title race all the way those media people put more weight on it.

Yep, for all sorts of reasons. But they'll also be the same writers who called him lazy when he pulled out of england friendlies, regularly came out with other racist tropes and then to top it off personified all England's ills on him at Euro 2016 (including suggesting that he probably couldn't read).

Hmm I don't think that's it. I think you're maligning those you accuse of maligning.

I gather that a couple of people just think he's getting too much praise for what he's done, and it's being used as a reason to possibly give him an award not merited. The name used is crass, but seems to be satirising that.

I don't agree with that; you can't speak out too much against racism, and his interventions have been notably effective in highlighting both the incidents and media culpability in them. And he's had a pretty good season so I'm not going to begrudge him any plaudits.

Not going to start impugning people's intentions either, though

There's nothing wrong with pointing out that the MEDIA has been trying to elevate Sterling and his behaviour beyond what he's actually done. They HAVE tried to make him out to be some kind of Martin Luther King figure for British football, and really, what has he said that dozens of others haven't already said? As someone else already alluded to, they're just trying to make-up for their earlier bashing of him, likely because their bosses have told them that they have to, given the current climate regarding all things race.

If you can't see what's wrong with calling a young black lad standing up against racism 'Raheem Luther King' in a derogatory manner then maybe you should actually listen to some of the stuff he has to say. He doesn't control the media, just like when they were bashing him and when they're now rightly acknowledging him.

Anyway this is big Virge's thread and I haven't congratulated him yet so I shall do it now. Most deserved personal award, hopefully he can add one or two trophies to this accolade and win the Ballon D'or in December.
