Brazil footballer Socrates suffers stomach haemorrhage
AFP
SAO PAULO — Former Brazil captain Socrates is in intensive care in hospital after suffering a stomach haemorrhage, Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein Hospital revealed on Friday night. Socrates, 57, who made his name with Sao Paulo giants Corinthians, "displayed symptoms of upper gastrointestinal bleeding brought about by high blood pressure," according to the hospital. Socrates captained Brazil at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups and starred for Corinthians between 1978 and 1984. He also played for Botagfogo, Flamengo and Santos, as well as Italian club Fiorentina.

He played for by far the best Brazil team not to win the World Cup...Socrates, Falcao, Zico, Cerezzo, Serginho...

I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

He's renowned for being a very heavy drinker, as well as being a heavy smoker, as you said. The haemorrhage is apparently due to high blood pressure, so it sounds like its been caused by that. Not a doctor, obviously, just my opinion. Shame, hope he gets better soon. A fucking great player.

The '82 world cup was one of the great WC competitions, and that goal is probably my most memorable moments from it along with Falcao's goal v Italy and Tardelli's goal in the final.

On life support now... :( http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/16017071.stm

Quote
Former Brazil captain Socrates is fighting for his life in hospital.

Medics at a Sao Paulo hospital said Socrates, widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders of all time, remained on life support on Saturday.

He has been in a critical condition with an intestinal infection since being admitted to intensive care on Friday night.

Socrates, who played in two World Cups, won 60 caps for his country between 1979 and 1986, scoring 22 goals.

The Brazilian, whose full name is Socrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Sousa Vieira de Oliveira, was taken to the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paolo with food poisoning on Friday, his wife said.

A hospital statement said the former footballer was "in a critical condition due to a septic shock of intestinal origin".

It added he was breathing with a ventilator and using a dialysis machine.

Socrates was hospitalised twice in August and September this year with bleeding in his digestive tract.

After these incidents he admitted he had problems with alcohol, and especially so during his playing career. He is also well known for his smoking habit.

In a recent television interview, Socrates said he had considered alcohol his "companion" but believed its regular use did not affect his performance on the field.

"Alcohol did not affect my career, in part because I never had the physical build to play this game," he said.

"Soccer became my profession only when I was already 24. I was too thin, and when I was young, I did not have the opportunity to prepare myself physically for the sport."
