I just read about the Concorde, and it made me think about how its former passengers must look back in sadness. They can't experience that magnificent jet anymore.

And it made me think about similar things in my life. I was on the roof of the World Trade Center in New York about 3 months before 9/11. I was one of only a handful of people up there at about 9:30pm, just before the rooftop closed. It was a beautiful starry night. Very quiet. I remember the second tower seeming so close, almost like you could reach out and touch it. And I remember seeing jets flying in to the airport and thinking how low they seemed to fly...I still have the ticket stub. No one can ever experience that again.

I was also on vacation a few years later in the Dominican Republic and visited a remote beach called Macau I think. I haven't traveled a lot, but that was the most beautiful spot I've ever been to. Just miles of uninhabited beach. Incredibly clear water. Just like a postcard. I heard much of it is altered now. A bunch of hotels and condos have been built there. I hope I heard wrong.

What experiences like that have you had?

The solar eclipse in Newquay, Cornwall 1999.

I'd gone with my then partner and we were camping in a field on the outskirts of a tiny village.

We were walking down the lane back to the tent the night before and it was pitch black but the skies were crystal  clear when the dumb fuck asked where's the moon??  Duh!!

Anyway we spent an hour or so when we got back to the tent staring at the skies watching so many shooting stars it was like fireworks.  I've never seen so many.

The day of the eclipse we were sat on the edge of the cliffs overlooking Fistral Beach and it was packed but the really weird bit was everyone was sat with their backs to the sea watching where the sun was.

We thought we were going to be disappointed as it was so cloudy, overcast and a bit drizzly but there was a tiny slither of blue sky that appeared like magic.

The whole beach was breathlessly quiet as the eclipse started but as this bit of blue sky edged towards the sun the encouraging shouts of "go on, go on, goooo oooon, yeeeeeeesssssss".

The clouds parted and we had the eclipse in all it's glory!

I bought half a dozen different papers the next morning and everyone had disappointing reports about the weather and not seeing anything worthwhile except for the reporter that was on Fistral Beach.

I've still got them somewhere in the attic.

I’m not sure which was the more underwhelming after all the build up, the eclipse or the Millennium Bug.

Agreed mate.  If that bit of blue sky hadn't appeared I'd have been so pissed at how many hoops we'd jumped through to get there.

24hrs by National Express coach, train, bus and walk, then the same to get home the day after.

Talking of the Millennium though I had a fabulous night at home with friends.

We'd followed the celebrations from Bondai Beach with Carl Cox at lunchtime across the continents to Europe.

Watching the firework display in Astley Park from our living room as midnight struck then several hours later heading up Rivington to watch the sun rise [emoji108]

I can remember exactly where I was for that, funnily enough, for something that turned out so underwhelming. We were on a family holiday in Caithness and stopped in a little village called Helmsdale in Sutherland and we had our solar filter glasses, only for it to turn out to be not much darker than your average Scottish overcast day, with no sight of the sun behind the clouds.

  • Azure window in Malta - I was on the rock in 2015. They closed the public visits in 2016 and it got destroyed in 2017.
  • Special mention: My dad tells me to add the Concorde on this list. And seeing it is the first, I am inclined to add it.
  • Steam engines. A remarkably similar-sized steam engine was in operation between 1925 and 2015 close to where I grew up. I last rode it in 2008. It wasn't used for commercial purposes. But more like between the parking and a park/garden about 10kms away. You could bicycle next to it or probably walk faster than this moves. But it was a legacy where I lived and we were very sad to let it die.

The old Pier Head bus station, often brought a bag of chips from the chippy there, went upstairs & sat on that balcony eating them, hearing sthe bus engines when drivers used to rev them up, & looking at the shipping traffic on the river.

Snookers, a snooker club (imaginative name) on Richmond Hill in Bournemouth.

Great dark and dingy place, you had to buzz and be allowed in, it felt great being let in to this little door off the street then up a few flights of stairs to the tables.

Underage and after hours drinking, dodgy microwaved pies and whatever bottles of beer were on offer in Macro. Andy, the owner, was a brilliant bloke, miss those days.

It's a Slug & Lettuce now, pretentious tosspot central.

We planned to go there after getting married in Gretna but it didnt happen.

The plan was get married at the Blacksmiths as late as possible followed by a buffet reception in the village hall then anyone who fancied it off to Glasgow for the night.

I also was atop the World Trade Centre in April 2001.

The Spion Kop. Deffo the madness and bustle of the old standing Kop. Fuck, I miss it.
Just try to explain it all, to someone who never had the chance to experience it.

You just couldn't do it justice.   :scarf

Pubs down the years, that have gone to the wall. Drink in one favourite, it closes, move to another, it closes, move to another, it closes. Move on to another.... and so on.

All the pubs I grew up with, or drank in, have gone into dust.

The Queens.
The Whitey.
The Breck.
The Strawberry Tav.
The George.
The Richmond
The Clarence
The Campfield.
The Thirly.
The Waverley.
The Granton.
The Little Solly.
The Alex.
The Derby.
The Farney.
The Flower house.
The Molly.
The Olympia.
……. and many more.

And after this shit has calmed down, many, many more might be gone forever. :(

Best I can think of are some of the old football grounds like Burnden Park, White Hart Lane and Upton Park. I know the new Spurs ground is on the same site so not quite the same as the others but always makes me grateful we redeveloped Anfield.

Haha was Bonkers on the Dock Road somewhere? What kind of place was it dare I ask? I remember years ago when I was about 5 or 6 my Grandad driving us into Liverpool and my cousins saying “my Dad goes to Bonkers” and my Grandad choosing not believing him, or not sounding overly impressed with his choice of venue. :D
