Domain registration and hosting
« on: December 21, 2006, 11:21:15 am »
My friend wants me to register a domain name for him. Who do people use for this? In the past I've used godaddy.com and have no complaints but wondered if there were better deals out there?
Well, I don't know what it is, but there's definitely something going on upstairs

Depends which domain you want, I guess.

Theres so many of them about now that you just need to shop around to find the one that meets your specific needs.

Gareth is right - horses for courses.

godaddy is brilliant for anything that is for personal use and relatively low key.  I have a couple of sites registered there.

We use network solutions and pro hosting for the work sites.

I'd avoid Network Solutions like the plague. Awful company.

A few years ago I had around 120 work related domains to move to new name servers. Approx half of those were registered with NetSol. They were so hard to deal with and get hold of on the phone that I landed up finding thier CEO's telephone number and leaving him a voice mail complaining.

A couple of days later I got a call from one of his lackys, offering his help :D

You are right on Net Sol.  Since my last post I have discovered that we have sacked them and use only pro hosting now.

Its for a small business. Thinking of taking their economy hosting package as well. Had a quick look at another couple of sites but it's dull dull dull and as I said have no complaints about Godaddy.

For .co.uk's I always use 123-reg and for .coms, .nets etc www.namecheap.com. godaddy have the shitiest control panel I've ever come across. If you use namecheap, use the coupon code yaffaspecial to save an extra $ or so.

We have around 50 or so domains with namecheap and no problems and their control panel deffo shits on godaddys.

I use 4uhosting.co.uk for both registration and hosting and although they had problems in their early days i cant fault them now.  They have a domain availability checker on site, several packages to choose from and their .co.uk's are cheap as anything, about £7 a year!

I use http://easily.co.uk/ never had a problem, their quite cheap £10 for a .co.uk for 2 years with web forwarding and email forwarding. The only thing thats ever happened was that my name & address was still comin up after I opted  on a whois to keep it private. I sent an email and they sorted it straight away.

Another thing, they recently implemented their own spam filter and even without changing any settings, its cut spam down to 1 a month at most

anybody in the know, anybody know where the best place is for a cheap .co.uk address, preferably payable using Paypal?

Registered for 123reg and others but would make life a lot easier if I could get it at a similar price paying with Paypal.

Looking for a domain name and web hosting for my online portfolio. What sort of package should I be looking for?

The domain will be a .tv address and host all my illustrations, animations and movies.

I've been looking at various domain websites and unsurprisingly all the best ones (.com, .co.uk, .net, .org) for my chosen website name are gone.

I was wondering if someone could please tell me if it makes a significant difference to a small business having .tv or .org.uk as opposed to .co.uk or .com? And if so which are the best alternatives?

Old thread really but why not eco the sentiments. I manage 20-30 domains a year. While there may be cheaper deals out there you will struggle to find someone who provides you with a better service and/or support than godaddy. I've been f*cked over by a lot of other registrars during the years. Never ever had a single issue with these guys.

//Edit:
As for hosting I would recommend Webair, who are also extremely good at what they do.

Godaddys control panel is seriously shite, poorly laid out, covered in ads and unintuitive compared with namecheaps.

I'm rather used to their cp but I do agree it can be a bit clunky.
As for ads I do agree with you completely. Rather annoying having to reject all the same crappy offers every time you renew a domain.

Still rather unparalleled in p2p (not filesharing) service though, at least in my experience.

One to certainly stay away from is joker.com. Overpriced and understaffed.

So is .tv a good domain to have then? Obviously LFC have done ok with it but for a small business would it make a difference? At the moment it's one of the few domains left available that I like. It's either that or change the name which I don't want to do really.

pipex are shit. they own webfusion. just about to send of a legal claim against them.

they also own 123reg, bit worried about what that'll mean to my domain registrations.

I also had a successful claim against fasthosts. These hosting companies are lawless, they have no regulation and use dirty contract tricks to extort their customers. still looking for a suitable UK based hosting company for long term.

Why should it make you look cheap?

It's a legitimate domain. so what's the worry?

Whenever I've used someones services from a web site I never even noticed whether it was .co.uk, .com, .net , it's just not relevant, as long as their service is what I'm after

I am going to register a domain name very soon and going with a .tv address. There are no real advantages other than it sounds better than the others.

Is there a reason why you want them to be UK based, you will get better pricing & probably service from a US based provider.

I have a domain with LowCostNames (streety.co.uk) and I have now bought some hosting from GoDaddy. Without checking first, I went to transfer the domain but they don't allow .co.uk transfers.

After speaking to their customer support they said you can find the IP address from your domain company and then change the ip address in the "zone file a record" in your hosting account.

Has anyone done this with GoDaddy?
