Looking at the gradient on the houses in some of the pictures it doesn’t look like that area as the roads around there between Wavertree road and Lawrence road are pretty level . The amount of cars also may hold a clue to it being nearer the city centre .

Was in the AJ a few weeks ago ...

I've got a photo somewhere of the AJ staff,  taken mid to late 70's. I'll try and dig it out and scan it sometime and post it up. Some of them might still be around.

There was an Alfred street off Great George street, it ran up toward the Anglican cathedral, much like Washington street did. It was a similar slope to our mystery street.

The only street that cut through Alfred St. was Rathbone St. so the street sign would belong to the latter.

Hmm.

Been busy so missed out on all the excitement.

I think you are all correct, it's likely that Alfred steet rather than the one I posted earlier, and 'Rathbone' would fit with the number of letters in that fuzzy sign.

The houses by the Cathedral look like those in the 'Magnet' Johnny Brent stows away on a delivery van going through the Tunnel from Wallasey.

Alfred Road is on this aerial view; it starts opposite the near end of the Cathedral and runs down to Gt George St.

Only cos I grew up close enough to there to recognise the general style ;)

Going back to the late 1970s, a minor shunt on St Anne Street. How cool are those Ford RS2000's that the police used, bet they catch most things in them!

Familiar site flying around Tower Hill when I was a lad. They always had the coolest cars. I heard a rumour that Ford had put 2.8ltr V6 engines in them.

They had a Mexico in the 70's

I loved the look of the Escort, superb mate. All those wheels need is a set shiny chrome wheel trim inserts to make it look boss :)
Those twin-headlight RS's are brilliant also.

A few I liked & thought you may too..

Was at this game, Notts forrest probably 1968, remember Terry Hennessey taking a corner right in front of me and my dad at corner of paddock and Anny rd, remember his massive bald head and Forests weird square badge, funny how something's stick, think it was first time I'd seen us lose, if memories not playing tricks. I was playing football in the street in the snow and my Dad called me over,  do you want to go the match?, don't think I stopped to answer was up the street before he'd finished his sentence, envy of my mates that day

Lucky it wasn't one of the deserted docks Tsar. I remember rumours at the time were that some people who resisted that particularly aggressive bunch ended up getting a late night soaking for their troubles.

Didn't that unit have a name? I thought it did but can't remember now, perhaps something like the special patrol group?

Yates in Moorfields was bleak back then.

I popped in there a couple of times around '73/'74 on the way home to Exchange but that was enough for me.

I gravitated to the pub on the corner opposite Exchange, forgotten what it was called (The Exchange? The Railway?), and found it a bit nicer for a final pint though it too was hardly salubrious.

Edit. Something has just come back to me about that pub though my memory could well be faulty, it's been many years since I went there.
From what I recall it was a bit rundown, it was old and Georgian I think, but the beer was ok, and I seem to remember the Gents bogs were outside at the back and you had to walk down a narrow dark and dingy alleyway to get to them.
