It is still a verb.

I know numerous grammar books will describe it as a type of verb but this is wrong and confusing for people learning English. It's a particular bugbear of mine because I always hear students saying stuff like "I can to play the piano". This happens because they see 'modal verb' and think the same verb rules apply. To describe it simply as a modal or a helping or linking word is more accurate and more helpful.

Anyway, I'll stop now.
