Brilliant  had tears of laughter reading that.  Thanks for posting :thumbup

I  remember sitting outside Old Trafford in the 60's three young scousers who had hitch-hiked from Kirkby    And who did we see walking towards us Tony Dunne who was a regular in the united team at the time we managed to get three tickets off him free  even though he knew we were Liverpool supporters he even sat and spoke with us for a while sound guy was Tony

'So what if you are?' Shanks told him. 'Even a broken clock is right twice in a day.'

-----------------------------------------
As the manager finished his demolition job on United, Emlyn Hyghes raised his hand. 'That's all very well, boss,' he said, 'but you haven't mentioned George Best, Denis Law or Bobby Charlton.' Shanks turned on him. 'You mean to tell me we can't beat a team that has only three players in it?' he said, glowering.

I laugh so hard at those ;D excellent read !!!

Rafa has some wit.

Have a look on here about rafa's views on cricket.
Have a look at my personal signature at the bottom of this message.

The legend that is Shankly. I loved this quote, " Left-back is Tony Dunne, even slower than Brennan. He goes on the overlap at twenty past three and doesn't come back until quarter to four.  ;D
We'll visit the Folies Bergeres,
They like to see the Scousers there,
The women are lovely with skin like a peach,
But no one can move it like Kenny Dalglish.

Yeah.. glad you guys liked it as much as I did!
I had no idea what compelled me to pull that book out from the shelves, 'cause under normal circumstances I wouldn't be caught reading a Man U-related book! Maybe it was Shanks or Best up there sending me a message, who knows?

But absolutely loved it, made me increase respect for both men (more Shanks though..)..

Wished we could someday see dear Gary Nev coming up with an autobiography... maybe he would have a special chapter dedicated to Liverpool or something... ;D

I LOVE Shanks stories!  Thanks for those from Best!

Here's one of my favourites:

Shanks to Jock Stein after the 1966 CWC tie with Celtic at Anfield:

'Jock, do you want your share of the gate money or shall we just return the empties ?'

Brilliant!

I saw - for the first time the other day - the video that accompanies the words when Shankly told the copper "don't kick that [scarf} lad, that's somebody's life!

Amazing man, and if manager's were a tenth of him today, the game would be all the better for it.

It was Shanks' spirit - you must be proud ;)
Mourinho, 19 Feb 2004: Liverpool over Chelsea, no doubt about it
Rick Parry, 22 Aug 2006: You have to aim for the stars, not mediocrity
Chris Bascombe, 21 Sep 2006: No matter how far back you seem, when you're blessed with class, anything is possible.

Great post Lady,

Gary Neville's autobiography would be 90% about Liverpool. His rivalry with the club is the biggest thing in his football career.  A chapter alone would have to be dedicated to songs and shouts from the crowd. Most notably the Gary Neville shags his Mam song.

:'(

;)

My take on why you took the book was because
  • were curious about why some arl fellas consider him to be one of the very best player they've ever seen
  • George just died not long ago, both attracting both reverence and spite at the same time
  • you wanted to see what he had to say about Liverpool

Honto desu ka? ;)

Right about the first two... but the third point... I don't think I expected him to mention anything related to Liverpool! It's almost as scandalous as imagining Stevie dedicating one whole chapter to Mourinho or something! But somehow, fate has it that of all pages I could turn to, I somehow flipped to that page... hmmm... that's why I just had to share it with the rest of you guys I guess...

Thanks for typing that out, Lady. Great read and enjoyable. For younger fans like me, it's great to read stuff like that to know more about the great man himself.

Anyone got any suggestions about books on Shanks with similar, stories/ anecdotes/ contents as those typed out by Lady?

Mourinho and Ferguson are amateurs when it comes to this mind games bollox.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In 1967, we arrived at Anfield to play Liverpool and as I glanced out of the window of the coach I saw Bill Shankly standing at the main entrance. I was the first player to alight from the coach and when I reached the entrance Bill shook my hand warmly. 'Good to see you again, George,' he said. 'You're looking well, son.'

This was unusual for him, and knowing Shanks to be a wily old fox, I decided to hang around to try to find out what he was up to. As each of the United players entered Anfield, Shanks shook his hand, welcomed him and told him how good he looked. Eventually, Bobby Charlton, a born worrier, came up to Shanks.

'Bobby, son. Good to see you,' Shanks said, shaking his hand. 'But by God, if ever there was a man who looked ill, it's you, Bobby!'

Bobby's face went as colourless as an icicle. 'Ill? I look ill?' he repeated, running the fingers of his right hand over his forehead and down his right cheek. He was visibly shaken,

'Aye, Bobby, son. You look like you're sickening for something. If I were you I'd see a doctor as soon as you set foot back in Manchester.' Shanks patted Bobby on the back and took off down the corridor, leaving him trembling in the foyer.

In the dressing room, Bobby was conspicious by his absence and, ominously, there was a delay in announcing the team. We sat around kicking our heels, no one daring to get changed in case Matt Busby had a tactical plan which meant leaving one of us out. The thought of getting changed only to be told to put your clothes back on because you're not in the team is a player's nightmare.

Eventually Matt Busby entered the dressing room with Jimmy Murphy and told us they had reshuffled the team which had beaten West Ham the previous week. Bobby Charlton was unavailable. He'd suddenly been taken ill

There's this one, but it's unavailable on the online store on lfc.tv (surprise surprise), and the seller on ebay will only post to the UK:

Don't know if you could get it somewhere else though, like amazon or whatever.

Boss that.

Theres another one about Bobby Moore. Right after the 1970 World Cup I think it was, we were playing West Ham at Anfield. As in this story, Bill was waiting for the coach to arrive with the opposition on. After he's greeted them, he runs into Kevin Keegan.

"Christ son, I've just seen that Bobby Moore. What a wreck. He's got bags under his eyes, he's limping. He's got dandruff and it looks as if he has been to a nightclub again".

Bobby Moore goes on to win man of the match, but Keegan scores and Liverpool win. After the game, Bill calls Kevin to one side. " Aye, he's some player that Bobby Moore isn't he? You'll never play against anyone better than him".

Boss, the tales are endless about the man.
"I'm a people man. Only the people matter".
-Bill Shankly.
