Haha, they were awful.

I love the more simple designs, with a few flourishes, like the McLaren from 05.

Perfect looking car.
that car was a rocket! think they won 10 races yet no titles

think the problem was sometimes Raikkonen and Montoya retired for no fault of their own and Alonso took full advantage

then  races were McLaren ran off into the distance Alonso would minimize the damage by coming home 2nd or 3rd.

The spine looks even worse than the fin. It makes it look like they were going to build the whole thing, but ran out of material in the process...

All of the fluff pieces for the past year have been talking about how much meaner and more 'aggressive' this year's cars would look and how the track would remind us of 1997.

They all just look like the last few years but with a lower rear wing.
If I were a linesman, I would execute defenders who applauded my offsides.

Theres some really cool details on that Ferrari, around the sidepods and floor, might actually have a good car from them this year.

Thing that I notice about the Ferrari is that everything seems to be in step, no obvious compromises. Early on I know.

Have to say, Sauber has the best looking car so far.

The Ferrari looks ok, was expecting the Ferrari to be pure sex. The McLaren looks bad with that new livery.

I miss the silver / bright red McLaren from about 5 years ago.

I find it odd sometimes that many F1 teams (apart from Ferrari etc.) change the main colour of their liveries so frequently.  It's like football teams changing the colour of their home strip every few years.

I did.  I feel somewhat daft for being disappointed by the livery of a racing car, but I was hoping for orange with flashes of white...the black lower 'cheapens' the look for me.

Reminds me of both Arrows and Spyker.

I expected the McLaren to be largely orange, with white, then maybe a little bit of black.

I dont think its a terrible looking livery, but I am a little disappointed.

As to why teams change colours, sponsorship. In 09 that McLaren was powered by Mercedes (silver arrows), and their main sponsor was Vodafone (red). Happens all the time with McLaren, in the early 2000's it was silver and black with West sponsorship, and in the 80's/90's it was white and red because Marlboro. Before that it had a white Yardley livery, and you have to go back to the late 60's/1970 for a proper sponsor-less McLaren orange car.

Ferrari are Ferrari, they'll always be red, but McLaren have always rolled with the sponsorship and adjusted accordingly. Same with Renault/Lotus. Yellow and black is more historical (even further back, teams used to run colours based on nationality), but the iconic all black and gold came from John Player Special cigarettes, white and orange came from ING, Alonso's blue and yellow came from Mild Seven. Damn, cigarette companies gave us the best looking cars.

Cheers for the explanation.  I find it a bit sad that some teams don't have a fixed "colour" identity and change based on their sponsors, but maybe that's just me.

Can't wait for the new season to start now.  Still want Lewis to win the championship but would like to see a lot stronger and more varied competition from the other teams than last year.

Similarly, I sometimes wish that the team location/base was included in the name.  To casual followers, the history of a team that's changed ownership a few times can be lost and I think 'teams' like the Enstone-based outfit deserve a bit more recognition for their historical exploits.
