New Iceage album sounding promising on first listen.

Just came to post the same thing. I knew the name but didn't know too much about them (the Pete Kember connection drew me in!).

Has anyone checked out the Squid record? I am not sure I like his vocals but it has some rave reviews.

And it’s getting good reviews! 2021 and we have had TWO good Weezer albums!  ;D

This really is actually pretty enjoyable.  Always approach them with a bit of jokey trepidation, but...are Weezer actually consistently good again?

Everything...
White
Pacific Daydream
Teal
Black
OK Human
Van Weezer

That's their album output in the last seven years...

Lyrics (& delivery) of "When the neon lights stop shining, I see you like a silver lining" is brilliant though  :)

Lots of people on here care. They care about what type of society allows Coldplay go straight to # 1 when there's so much other quality out there in the UK.

Sleater-Kinney have made a surprise announcement of the release of their 10th studio album - the self-produced Path of Wellness is to be released on 11th June, having been written last spring.

It's the third record of what it seems fair to call a second chapter in the band's career (following a hiatus 2006-'14) and the first since 1996 to not feature long-term drummer Janet Weiss (who left the band shortly before the last album was released in 2019).

New Dinosaur Jr, The Coral, and Teenage Fanclub albums in the last couple of weeks have made for some really enjoyable listening - all really catchy, but without having too many sharp edges...definitely earmarked as future hangover listening!
Have now given the Dino Jr one a good few listens and yeah, catchy as hell and a lot of fun. Will have to try the Teenage Fanclub one too, only ever had one album by them but remember liking it and the idea of that bloke from Gorky's fronting them intrigues.

Anyone looking for some melodic alternative indie folk with occasional classic rock vibes and the odd West African flourish (so no one, probably) should check out Superwolves. It might just be my favourite album of the first 36.7% of the year.

Intriguing. Just had a quick scan listen and it sounds very promising. Will put it on the playlist for a proper listen later.

Only just seen this... but Pete Kember! That's sold it for me straight away. Had to look up what his involvement is - so he's produced the new album. Interesting. Will definitely give that a listen.

Has anyone checked out the Squid record? I am not sure I like his vocals but it has some rave reviews.

I commented on it earlier, based on first listen... A couple of the "album tracks" (ie the ones I'd not heard before) aren't as immediately accessible as the ones that have been released previously as singles (Paddling, Narrator) so it took a few more listens to really get into it, but now the whole thing has really got under my skin. It's an extremely well balanced and paced album, so it hangs together brilliantly.

Boy Racers in particular is incredible - what you might call a track of two halves...

Although I think perhaps Peel St is my favourite...

Didn't really know where to post this, but I guess I can make it relevant below.  Watched this interview with Shirley Manson of Garbage as part of the 'Women of Rock Oral History Project' last weekend, and thought it was really good.  She's a really engaging & expressive interviewee, who needs no encouragement (and has an infectious laugh!), and whilst she gives a really good account of her upbringing, early years, & Garbage overall, she goes on to discuss gender, sexism, ageing, & more in what's a really interesting interview overall.  Certainly don't think you'd have to be into the band to enjoy the interview.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8xKKPANd6I&t

To make this somewhat relevant to the thread, Garbage release their 7th album - No Gods, No Masters - on 11th June and it sounds like it could be decent:

The Matthew E. White / Lonnie Holley collaboration album should appeal to many of you on here.

White had some musical sketches with no home for his usual solo work so invited Holley to sing on them (a lot is improvised from his notebooks).

If you like Gil Scott-Heron 'I'm New Here' then you will enjoy this.

A bit of a MOR shout here ;D but does anyone like Counting Crows?  Got played a lot at home during my late teens & through my 20s, but I never really paid much attention.  Maybe it's 15 months of lockdown & not being able to spend much time 'back home' that's done it to me, but I'm considering getting their new album if I pop into town tomorrow...

Must be getting old and sentimental.

Used to love the double live album (Across a Wire?) and A Desert Life, back end of the nineties. Saw them live in Sheffield on the Hard Candy tour and was really disappointed and haven’t really paid much attention since.

New Sons of Kemet, anyone? Quite like Gruff Rhys' new one too. About a volcano, apparently. Why not. Looking forward to giving the Mdou Moctar one a listen too, it's got some good reviews and I liked his last one. Still stuck on Superwolves mostly though. And Burial, listening to loads of his stuff at the minute for some reason, but it's not from this year and hence has no relevance so I can only apologise for even bringing it up.

Giving this a second listen right now - really like it.  Chilled out, melodic, and bright.

Also got Roddy Woomble's new one on Friday - also good on first listen; might squeeze it in again before the match.

Indieheads reddit was going crazy over the new Black Midi album yesterday. Meant to be a good'un.

I just find it all too contrived. Like they are trying too hard so it comes over as false. Think there are so many bands of that ilk who are heaps better.

Admittedly, I haven't seen them live as they are meant to be great.
No, jazz. You fear jazz. You fear the lack of rules, the lack of boundaries. Oh look, it's a fence. But, no, it's soft.

Love this. Not many bands have taken such a hiatus and just continued exactly where they left off so seamlessly. Incapable of making a bad record.

I've actually been listening to the debut quite a bit this last couple of weeks and I love it.  Carrie Brownstein's book is really good too.

The second track released from the new album:

I wasn't sure about them for ages, but seeing some live performances (on video, not in the flesh) seems to make so much more sense of them.

I have wondered if they're some kind of situationist hoax, but listening to them on the radio now, it mostly sounds like they're just having a lot of fun. I mean, they finished their live set on the radio with a cover of Hall & Oates. :lmao

And yes, I got the release date wrong. Will have to download and listen to the album this afternoon.

I’ve never really listened to them, are they similar to Black Country, New Road? Fucking loved their album.

They are one of those bands who all met at a prestigious music school which I never feel come off as sincere as other bands. The music is normally really good but, but as you say, contrived.
