If teams are given free places in the european championships, surely its better for teams to not be in division A so they have a fallback should they not qualify via normal means?

Similarly, if results in this go towards the fifa rankings, surely its better to throw the games in this one so you can be in a lower group for the next one and have easier games and so higher rankings?

If it lasts more than two goes I'd be surprised. Didn't realize the format will offer a path for the likes of the D teams to qualify.

Gareth is a lovely family man (possibly?) and a man of vast managerial experience (a season or two at Boro?). Chalk and cheese.

Is this replacing Euro qualifiers then? Thought it was just some sort of weird Inter toto thing that no one would take seriously? What’s going on? I’d read the explanation that’s no doubt contained on page one but not sure I’m that desperate to try and get my head around it!

No, this will essentially replace friendlies. Qualifiers will still take place, this will just provide a further opportunity to qualify if you can't make it through the qualifiers.

I can’t believe Blighty haughtily sat out the first few World Cups, European Cups and Euros - and now this is the one we choose to get in on the ground floor for.

Help. This is the most confusing thing in football.  :o  :o  :o  :o

Is this a new competition like the Confederations Cup? Is there a cup to be won at all or is this just to qualify for the Euros?

Or is this a new Euros format?

Or do the winners of the groups go to the Euros?

What about World Cup Qualifiers, are they replaced with this new league?

And if you win your group from League B-D then do you go to the semi finals and have a play off for a trophy or league championship?

And whose idea was it to put 3 teams in a group? Is it not normally 4?

And if England win this thing is it a major trophy so we don't have to be harping on about '66 all the time?

It is a New European thing but FIFA are looking at it for a world wide one. The teams in League A compete for a cup with the 4 group winners having a play off next summer 2019.

Or is this a new Euros format?

No but it replaces the play offs - for 2020 qualifiers there will be 10 groups with winners and runners up in each group going to the finals and then this will be used a play off so a team from each league will also make Euro 2020

Or do the winners of the groups go to the Euros?

No

What about World Cup Qualifiers, are they replaced with this new league?

Not yet to be confirmed how it will work with World Cup Qualifiers

And if you win your group from League B-D then do you go to the semi finals and have a play off for a trophy or league championship?

No you get promoted the league above, after the main qualifier groups the 4 best teams not already qualified from each league will compete in a semi-final / final playoff for a spot at 2020

And whose idea was it to put 3 teams in a group? Is it not normally 4?

This is so the bigger teams can still have friendly games V other non European nations

And if England win this thing is it a major trophy so we don't have to be harping on about '66 all the time?

Who knows what the English media will do

Finally got round to trying to understand the point of this competition in the forlorn hope that it cut down on qualifying, especially the pointless games against nations with a population no greater than a medium sized village. No such luck.

Groups of 5 or 6 drawn from all 55 European associations with 10 match days including 2 next June and then dates in September October and November.

A total waste of time.

I quite like the tournament. Better than all the pointless friendlies they had before.

For me the bottom 2 groups could be used as a pre qualifying tournament for the main qualifying so that there are less pointless games between the likes of France and Andorra.

Would make the qualifying more interesting as there would be less deadwood games and would make groups C and D more interesting.

Agree completely. And these lower level qualifying tournaments could come in September, directly after a WC or Euro as they will ge composed of nations who did not compete in the final.

Moreover, the number of competitive matches during the competition's league phase will increase from 138 to 162, thereby increasing the commercial value of the competition.

Just wait for the next international break, teams that are still involved in Euro 2021 qualifiers (like Scotland) will play three games in six days.

Joke of a format and a waste of time. I really wish they'd scrap half the international football calendar. Reduce the friendlies, make the qualification timetable shorter, and only have the respective federations' continental tournaments along with the world cup. Everything else is just space filler. I've not been excited by an England game since I was a young child.

Views like this are incredibly short sighted the game would be lost in many smaller countries without international football. Many smaller less well off nations wouldn't even be able keep game going at even a basic level with out the money generated from competitions like World Cup, Euros, AFCON etc.

Besides most players love playing for their country plus internationals attract huge audiences a significant amount of whom will only be casual followers of the sport but whom still generate significant revenues for national associations. A lot of the money is invested in grass route football. Most countries do not have huge football clubs with a global reach so the role of the national association in developing talent becomes more important.

It was an entertaining 0-0 tbf. Latvia were unfortunate not to win. They missed a pen and missed a few good chances as well. Andorra chaotically defended at times. It reminded me of a bottom of the table League One/Two game.  ;D
