I'm interested in this but don't understand how it works and how to make money from it?

That's a bold statement. For example, I'm in New York at the moment and I've used my credit card to pay for the hotel bill, for meals, cash advances, store purchases, rail tickets. How exactly would bitcoin be a more credible alternative?
It will take time Al, no doubt about it. It cannot do this overnight.
Disruptive technologies move rapidly though, so think about decentralised currencies as you would social media & mobile phones. It is unfathomable to think how far they have come since 2005. The internet of things is next up, and I've no idea how IOT & Bitcoin could be used together, but there are so many possibilities considering IOT designers and early adopters are the same types of people that are likely to adopt Bitcoin.

so on to your question. In store purchases typically require the consumer to have a card and the shopkeeper to have a scanner & register. This whole process is going to be turned upside down within 5-10 years imo. I already see so many cafe's these days using tablets at POS. Where there are tablets, there is the internet, so it's easy for developers to release api's to enable Bitcoin to work with all kinds of POS software, which undoubtedly run on android and ios.

From the customer's point of view, we are used to having money & cards. But this will begin changing too as people (initially internet natives) use their RFC phones for transactions. Sure if they have an phone with a barcode/scanner, they don't even need a cash register, they can simply scan, purchase and leave. I'm going to lump couponing & loyalty schemes in there too, as they will increasingly be used in phones, such as Wallet that i believe is available for quite a while on IOS.

There are a lot of websites, cafe's and so forth who are currently selling their products and services much cheaper if the consumer uses bitcoin. I've seen cafe's & clothes shops promote this fact, heck even a Tesla car was bought using them.

There are 2 reasons for items being cheaper:
1. No merchant fees. So it is considerably cheaper to sell via bitcoin as I said earlier.
2. The shop owners want to invest in bitcoins, as they will no doubtedly increase in value.

Will Bitcoin replace Visa & Mastercard?
No, I don't think so. We will use both due to the advantages and disadvantages of both.

I just plonked some down on Ethereum. It's basically Bitcoin 2.0: blockchain technology, but with a lot more utility and can be used as the basis for its own apps and platforms. The value has gone up from like $20 to $186 in a month. They announced a list of partner corporations last night that's 86 companies strong and includes Microsoft, Toyota and Merck, a number of trillion dollar hedge funds...

I've never invested in anything before, so let's see how this goes!

You are sittin' pretty, man!

I am just a layman, but having read deeply through all of the potential applications, I actually think Ethereum will be huge in a couple of years. Having never bought anything resembling stock before, I spent yesterday glued to the crytpomarkets like a goober, but I plan to sit on these for as long as I can hold out.

I used Coinbase. I hear people in EU use Kraken.

Lfsea: Other risks include hacks and potential friction with government agencies. But for the most part it looks like major financial institutions and even governmental agencies are willing to give blockchain a try, and it only makes sense that it'll be ethereum many of them go with, because bitcoin has no functionality other than being a currency. Ethereum applies blockchain sequence technology to anything...from banking to cloud supercomputing to supply chain management for mega--corporations, that's why I'm so jazzed about it -- If bitcoin can reach 2k with limited functionality, the potential for Ethereum in the next 2-3 years is really endless.

Then again, keep in mind: ---> I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING <--- about stock markets or investing, but it's fun to have some skin in the game of what really might be the next big thing in many fields...some are calling it Internet 3.0.

Exactly the same.

Kraken isn't being much better either. Site appears to be up/down a lot today (especially the member side of things) and is taking an age to become verified so I can add funds to the account.

Think I've missed out on around £1500 profit so far given the level I was looking to invest  :no

Looks like their rates are a bit higher but seem to be a far more professional and easy to use outfit.

I have absolutely no idea what I am doing (insert David Moyes pic), but I have been monitoring the value against the pound since yesterday and I have had to invest what I am prepared to lose.

Well assuming he got them for around the £69 mark which is what they were going for on the 11th, he'd have got approx 50 Eth.

At today's value of around £154 that would give them a value of £7,700. So a £4,200 profit.

For Kraken we only need to be tier 1 verified right? Just submitted my information so hopefully doesn't take too long. Looking to invest around £2000 in Ethereum, having read into it online seems like it should give a decent return within the next year or so

I've gone on and setup my  NatWest account with Coinbase. I have had to send a small deposit across via IBAN to verify the account, that will take around 3-4 days. I should then be able to use that account to transfer more money in. NatWest charge £10 a time to do this, and give a shite rate GBP/EUR.

JRC_ - my basic understanding is that tier 1 only allows you to trade in "virtual" currency. To be able to buy Ethereum using GBP sterling you will need tier 2

I'm still a novice to it all but have spent a fair bit of time looking into it today. So with the above site, you need to download a wallet (which I assume is free) then buy however much you want and then the site will transfer it into your wallet. That right?

Thats correct. If you setup a Coinbase account, it gives you an ETH wallet. That wallet then has an address that you give to the above site to sent the ETH to.

You need to get verified as the max purchase without looks like £100. I have just tried to do this, uploaded my ID and proof of address. Lets see what happens!

The Coinbase account will then allow you to sell the ETH in the future, should you wish.

Just looking into this and was wondering what people's thoughts are on Ripple?

I would be hesitant to invest in something with a substantial share price already (even though it might still have a big upside), but noticed that Ripple is still trading very cheaply?
