For those who know little about Bill, rather than write up a whole new article on the basic facts, the best thing I can do is direct you to this brilliant site all about Bill Shankly. With write ups from our very own Wooltonian and others, it beautifully encapsulates everything you could want to know about the man.
http://www.shankly.com/For those who want the very basic facts, Shankly was born 100 years ago in the Ayrshire mining village of Glenbuck.
He went on to play for Carlisle, and then Preston North End with whom he won the FA Cup in 1938.
In 1944 he marries Agnes 'Nessie' Fisher, his lifelong partner.
1949 he takes up his first manager position at Carlisle, moving onto Grimbsy Town in 1951.
Liverpool interview him for their vacant managerial seat at the club but he doesn't get the job until 1959.
He takes Liverpool to the top division in 1962, winning the league in 1964, the FA Cup (for the first time ever) in 1965 and again the championship in 1973 as well as the UEFA Cup.
After winning the FA Cup in 1974, he retires that summer but still leads Liverpool out for the Charity Shield a month later.
Bill Shankly died 29th September 1981.
Just under a year later, Nessie unlocks the Shankly Gates at Anfield.
In 1997 two memorials to Shankly are unveiled, one in Glenbuck and one at Anfield.
Most of us will have heard myriad sayings attributed to Shankly. My favourite one is quite simply, "I...wanted to make the people happy".
RIP Bill and Nessie.
