Best read out loud in a South Lanarkshire accent.  :wave

Or even an Ayrshire one  ;)

Love the writing style Peace has. Looks as if it captures him perfectly. Copy ordered!

Just downloaded it on to The Kindle there. I can't wait to devour this.

As for Peace's repetitions - I quite like them. They are an effective way into the protagonist's psyche and as mentioned before they is a poetic element into the mantra like consciousness of the charachter. I love the fact that Peace treats Shankly like a saint - it will be a nice bit of escapism from this horrible cynical transfer window.

Erm, is the book really written like the OP? Cause I found that unreadable, sorry. I thought I was going to have an epileptic fit at one point

It is an extremely unique style of writing. I've read the extended extracts in The Times and gotta agree with you. Personally found it unreadable. Different strokes for different folks I guess but not at all a fan of the style. The content though is fantastic.

Got my copy today. It's weightier than I expected which was nice to see, hopefully a bit of an epic read.
I just flicked open a random page (around the '81 EC final) after it was delivered and had to force myself to put it down after about 3 pages.
Looking forward to settling down with it later.

My missus picked it up for me yesterday.  I've never read anything by David Peace before, I had a skim through and the prose is like nothing I've ever read before.  I'm trying to save it for my holiday, but I can't see that happening.

I was going to take on holiday too, but having been moved to tears just reading the reviews, I decided that a fat blubbering Scouser reading by the pool every day wasnt good for me or other holiday makers....plus I want to wait till the Suarez shit is put to bed so not as to sully, what I am sure will be a spiritual read....one to be read in privacy.

I'm about 450 pages in and it is very moving, it reminds me of why I fell in love with football in the first place and in this day and age I'll take every reminder I can get.  Shankly resigned the year before I was born, but my Dad meant he was always about in our house, he couldn't stop talking about him.  This book is important to those who weren't alive while he was our custodian, I saw Peter Hooton on TV the other day, he called it Shankly's bible.  I think that sums it up, it preaches 'The Liverpool Way'.

I thought I'd struggle with the prose but after a while it becomes hypnotic and you struggle to put the book down.  Very, very impressive so far.

Red or Dead
Friday 9 August 2013, 13:49
“You’d be hard pushed to find a better man to write about than Bill Shankly.” David Peace [The Damned United, Red Riding Trilogy] talks to us about Red Or Dead, his latest novel about legendary Liverpool Manager Bill Shankly, which is this week’s Book at Bedtime.

Red or Dead is this week’s Book at Bedtime. You can listen online from Monday 12 August

Why did you choose Bill Shankly?

I think it was not so much that I chose Bill Shankly as - and it might sound a bit over romantic or even arrogant to some people –Bill Shankly chose me really. I was a bit tired of contributing to narratives of despair and defeat and I wanted to write a book about a good man for a change. I was struggling to think what kind of book to do and how to write that narrative when a film producer asked would I like to write a film script about the life of Bill Shankly.  And before he’d even finished the sentence, I was like, absolutely. But first I need to write a novel. It was as though Bill Shankly had been sat in the room all along - I’d not noticed him. Growing up, I was a Huddersfield Town supporter and Bill Shankly – well before my time – was a manager at Huddersfield Town. My father and grandfather often talked about him. He features in The Damned United as well. In the original first edition, if you take off the cover, he’s there. It felt like something I’d been waiting to write. People might say its hyperbole but you’d be hard pushed to find a better man to write about than Bill Shankly.

What do you think it is about Bill Shankly that makes him such an enduring cultural icon?

This was a man who changed and transformed people’s lives, whether they were the players or the supporters. He had endless time for ordinary people. You could knock on his door and he would invite you in for a cup of tea. He personally answered all the letters he received. So people have this whole reservoir of stories and memories – folk memories from people on Merseyside - of what this man meant to them and how he changed their lives. Everybody he met, he always thought the best of them, and brought the best out of them. And he always, always treated people equally. And it comes back to the fact that he was a socialist – not in the way that he read a great lot of political literature or theory, but in the way he treated everybody equally, the way that he believed everybody deserved equality of opportunity, that it wasn’t about the individual - that it was about the team, the community, and that everybody worked for each other on the pitch as the team and off the pitch as the club. He represents socialism in its most beautiful and simplest form. Every day of his life, every hour of his life – he lived it with these principles. Shankly said that he was “made for Liverpool.”

Could Shankly have achieved greatness anywhere, or was Liverpool essential to making him the man, and the  manager, that he became?

As a Huddersfield Town supporter, and being that Huddersfield was the club he left for Liverpool, we Huddersfield Town supporters always think: had our board given him the money to buy Ian Saint John, then Huddersfield Town would have the same legacy and status that Liverpool Football Club still have to this day. But at the risk of alienating and annoying every Huddersfield Town supporter out there, I think in all honesty that Shankly went to Liverpool because he knew that even though Liverpool were in the second division, there was a fervour to the supporters that he felt he could help awaken and that’s what he did. He instinctively knew that this was the city for him.

Do you have a soundtrack to get yourself into the atmosphere of a time period and if so, what was it for Red or Dead?

When I’m writing, I always try to use the music of the time I’m writing about. Going back to my first book, 1974, I listened to Diamond Dogs by David Bowie over and over again. I think the music of a particular time can help you recapture the language - because language changes all the time. With Red or Dead – it was a little bit more difficult. Bill Shankly himself liked what I might describe as easy listening – Jim Reeves, Pat Boone, Mario Lanza – and I did dutifully go and buy a lot of the music he listened to. To be honest – shall we say – I found it a little bit distracting to listen to it. I’m a huge admirer of Shostakovich and his historical symphonies based on certain years.  That music captured something about the crowd scenes and the football scenes. And Shostakovich himself was a huge football fan – he supported St Petersburg.

You mentioned that you were in a band when you were a teenager – what was it called?

The Paunchy Cowboys. We recorded a lot of demos in studios in Leeds – we have the demo tapes  -but so far there’s not been the demand to see them digitalised…

With Mr. Ferguson retiring and Red or Dead covering Bill Shankly’s retirement, can we draw comparisons between the pair?

Mr. Ferguson was a great admirer of Bill Shankly and there are stories that when Mr. Ferguson was at Aberdeen, he used to play tapes of Bill Shankly speaking on the Aberdeen bus – much to the horror of some of the players. I think there is a good comparison between what Mr. Ferguson achieved when he was manager of Aberdeen, and what Bill Shankly did when he came to Liverpool. By the time Mr. Ferguson goes to Manchester United, you’d need to compare him with Bob Paisley. Manchester United had not been as successful in previous years, but when Bill Shankly went to Liverpool they were in the second division. Manchester United were not in the second division. So it’s more useful to compare Ferguson’s Manchester United period with Paisley at Liverpool. It’s been said that after your 12th book, you’ve threatened to stop writing altogether – is that true? The daft things you say in interviews! I’d written Occupied City, which was my eighth book, and I think I’d written myself into a bit of a corner. As I say, I was looking for a different kind of narrative; a different story. And at that time before Bill Shankly came calling, I did find the thought of four more dark books a bit too much. But the bad news is, I’ve changed my mind. I think there’ll be more books. Sorry.

Red or Dead is this week’s Book at Bedtime. You can listen online from Monday 12 August

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain

DJ Taylor massacred this book in the Independent yesterday.

Saying it was too highbrow for football fans, and highbrow readers would ignore it as it's about football. Also said girls wouldn't be interested which I thought was a load of bollocks judging by posters on here.

So full of shit I feel like complaining.

Saw that DJ Taylor review, seemed like sour grapes from a jealous fellow author. And as you say, the idea that women aren't interested in the life of Shankly or football in general and that football fans are too thick for literary fiction is bollocks and probably says more about his own prejudices.

David Peace is not everyone's cup of tea, but I think there are shedloads of "average football fans" who will love this. Or are the working classes not meant to be able to read?

I will have watched over 4000 matches in this lifetime. It's a strange game in that it's extremely watchable and almost unwatchable at the same time. The repetition, the endless matches, crowd attendances, teamsheets and results--it's so monotonous at times. You almost feel like the players are taking the piss, asking you why are you watching these repetitive games. And yet there's something about it that makes you keep going and it's more enjoyable than annoying to do so. I don't know about others, but I found myself skimming over the repetitive games to get to the next game of football. Interesting game and well worth the watch but as ever with football it deliberately doesn't make life easy for the viewer.

etc, etc, ;)

there's a nice write up here in the Scottish Herald by Rob Fraser:

http://www.heraldscotland.com/books-poetry/interviews/david-peace-puts-bill-shankly-in-a-league-of-his-own.21800500

I'm about 100 pages in and loving so far. I was a bit apprehensive about the style of writing too but I find it very hypnotic and easily read. It's anything but 'highbrow', it's simple and honest, nothing fancy, no big words or fanciful imagery here, and at it's best it's quite poetic.

It works really well in parts, such as the bit where the lads are going over the ground at Melwood, pulling out all the stones and weeds. Or the training regimes with the box that himself and Bob built. It reminds me at times of how we used to play football, simple and effective.

I think it does well in reflecting the work ethic which Bill imparted on the players and staff, the drudgery and repetition that was involved. And just like how that brought rewards, the writing brings its own rewards too. You feel swept along by the momentum and sheer inevitability of it all. There's a real clarity to it and a sense of purpose that I find really engaging. So far, my only concern is that I'll be finished it too soon.

Absolutely. I seem to remember John Barnes (or another Liverpool player anyway) telling a story about drills for taking a ball on the volley, over and over again, so that the muscle memory took over in a game situation. He just knew what to do. Repetition. As a Club I think we have lost all of our muscle memory from the days of Bill Shankly.

I finished it very late last night. Couple of of thoughts on it.

I really didn't want it to end.  The pace and rhythm of the first 500 pages is very exciting even with all the repetition. Repetition, simplicity and enjoyment are how greatness is built.

The 200 pages after that are among the best I've read from Peace. It slows down, life suddenly loses that steady pace.  It gets a little upsetting for a while but Shankly's personality and outlook never lets you dwell, he never lets your head drop and that's the most inspiring thing about him.  It's an excellent portrait of a great man.  There are probably bigger conversations about his politics, how he foresaw modern football and the other themes, but essentially it feels like a guide on how to live your life, how to be good. Completely absorbing and it's still swirling around my head today.  I'll be reading it again very soon.

On David Peace, I think it possibly falls just short of GB84, which is his masterpiece but it gets very close.  Great subject and very respectful treatment of all concerned.  Loved it.

Gotta admit im really struggling with this.

If it wasnt for the subject matter (an the fact it cost me a score) it would have been given away or binned by now.
I understand the use of repetition but come on. He blatantly ( in my personal amateur opinion) goes to far with it. Especially when you consider that shankly himself was an advocate of doing things the simple way.

Im enjoying the story and will (painfully) see it out.

I just wish he'd brought out a 500 page version too that had half of the completely pointoess repetition taken out.

Bit gutted cos i looked forward to this for months.

I am with you on the repetition. It might be the author's style of writing but I mostly found the constant repetition irritating and unnecessary. I still read it every time though just in case i missed anything important. But you're right. This could have been two hundred pages less and it would still have been a great story to read.

I bought the book for a friend. A good friend. A red. I'm reading it, but I bought it for a friend, a good red. I got it yesterday. Yesterday. I plundered the first 70 pages at work and on the bus and we've just beaten Chelsea in the FA Cup.

Loving it. Just ordered another copy for me, as my friend needs to read it. A good red.

OK, I'll stop now.

I got this for my birthday and I'm about 70 pages in so far. I'd heard a lot about Peace's style but I have to say I really haven't minded it. I may even have warmed to it. I have a 90 minute train journey on Sunday and I'm looking forward to it a lot more now I have this book to read.

Loved the review Michael. You've captured the book beautifully.

It's a powerful novel. Liverpool supporters will love it. They'll also be impressed by the man's research and his feel for what's important - not just in Shankly's life, but in the age of football it depicts. Its style is rightly described above as hypnotic and there are reasons for it which become quickly apparent as you're introduced to Shankly's coaching methodology. Above all it honours a great man - and even more rare, a good one.

This is the second fine work of fiction I've read on Liverpool in two years. Last year Fat Scouser published the brilliant 'Life and Opinions of Mr Nobody'. This year it's David Peace's 'Red or Dead'. We're being spoilt. Who's going to deliver in 2014?

This is the best review I've read so far.

Not the best review I've read. ;)

As for the notion that football fans cannot read "proper" fiction. Deep in there are the roots of Hillsborough. Well done Taylor you utter bell end.

Fucking Leicester City.........

Many many pages into it ( of many many pages)on a summer holiday...
Will give full review on here when I finish it (the damned united being in my top 10 books of all time and all)

But fucking Leicester City....

Exactly what I thought when I got to that point. Had a laugh with my mate at work who supports them.

There's a decent write-up on David Peace's Epstein night on the Merseysider magazine's website: http://www.merseysidermagazine.com/site/sport/david-peace-at-the-epstein-theatre/ It's got a couple of photos plus on the same website there's a long review of the book.

Love all the passages where Shankly and Matt Busby have their chats, the one after we beat United on the way to the title is just brilliant.
