Definitely cocky watchman as my grandad was one.

As a kid I couldn't get my head around why he use a women's bra for a coke fire during winter's nights. (Brazier/brassiere). Mind you there were akways odds and Sod's of underwear to be discovered on bomb sites so maybe that's were they came from.
And 'cocky's hut' being scouse rhyming slang for 'gut'.

My lad asked me how to get to Meols yesterday. I said go through the new tunnel.

"what fucking new tunnel, do you mean the one that opened about 25 years ago", he said.

The new tunnel has been open since 1974  ;D

Jeez. I was working in Gt Crosshall St when Lizzie opened it in June 1971 and finished my career in Wirral where I would regularly walk past the plaque on the side of the ventilation shaft at Seacombe commemorating the eight men who dies in its construction.

The old one is great on a motorbike, straight roads are boring, but always preferred going through the new tunnel.

I still can't get my head around that both my Dad and my Stepdad used to ride pedal bikes through the old tunnel, my stepdad used to ride from Southport to North Wales and back

As school kids a few of us would ride from north Liverpool to Conwy or Llandudno and back. Unfortunately bikes were not allowed in the tunnel, so it was ride into town and catch the first ferry across to Birkenhead then hope to get back from Wales in time for the last ferry back across to Liverpool. We only just made it one time due to a puncture on the Wirral meaning a pit stop.

Another time we were hoping to camp over there but no sites would take a group of Scouse lads. We got hit by torrential rain too, so ended up having to ride straight back to Liverpool again. Looking back now we must have been mad. Our bikes only had either three or five years and we rode in jeans and trainers. A nightmare when wet.

Same here..will always be the old & new tunnels, my kids (now adults) are on to it too & also use the new & old term.
They still can't get their heads around using ten bob tho', not a scouse thing but one oldie that I still use day to day.
Used to use that at a match too when a player would skew a header off target.."he's got a head like a ten bob" or just ten bob 'ead.
As youngsters we'd often cycle to Llangollen & camp, we used to do Rhyl & back in a day too..like SoS we'd jump the ferry across.
Whenever we got the ferry or went thro the tunnels we also used to say we were goin abroad.

Ride my push bike through the old tunnel now and then. Bylaws allow it at night (with varying cut-off times, and all day Sunday in winter). The most scary thing is the last corner, where you know the drivers can't see you. And those drivers that are more afraid of changing lane than of hitting a cyclist., so crawl past you with less than a foot to spare, despite the rest of the tunnel being empty ::)
