Microsoft Zune
« on: March 10, 2007, 03:40:09 am »
A bit surprised there's no threads about Microsoft's new splash into the portable mp3/video playback market.

I'm no expert on this thing, and have recently opted towards Creative for my mp3 needs but with Microsoft's bottomless pockets to back up this campaign. Expect the Zune line of products to gain a significant chunk of the marketshare within 2 or 3 years as Microsoft has done in the console market.

No threads maybe cos UK aint gonna see this for upto a year is it?  Last I read it was coming to UK late 2007 or even early 2008.

just what is that all about?  Why delay the luanch over here by such a considerable time?  ???

Would love to have a look at one of these; but cos of the delay I am now opting for the new Sony VideoWalkman.  :P

I was thinking about getting one, but now cos my iPod Mini is starting to play up I'm gonna need a new one sooner than I first thought, so the Zune might not be an option for a good while.

I likes my things to last, you see. If I get a new iPod I'll expect it to be still going strong in 3 years time, or I'll whinge.

Very thought provoking.
Someone should do the right thing - go back in time to 1992 and destroy the codes to Championship Manager before it is ever released

Makes sense to me, one of my friends iPods went tits up after about 5 months.

This thing isn't out in Canada yet either as far as I know.

New ZuneHD.

Looks pretty smart. Not sure if they are releasing it anywhere apart from America though which seems daft.

Apparently its coming out in the UK. Will be getting one of these for my music, simple and the software they have is amazing. Much much better than itunes. Which is the main reason i want one. Got a Zune 30 and it just gathering dust because its too bulky to carry around but even that was ok-ish.

Apparently MS tried to get an iPhone dev guy to code the Zune and pay him a lot of money but he refused. So they may be looking to the Apps as well although nobody can compete with Apple on that scale.

Microsoft can :)

forget 3rd party developer apps you'll see apps straight from the behemoth itself i expect. Plus if the OS is really dev friendly we could see an unbelievable amount of apps, sort of similar to Windows per se?

For those of you who have a Zune, is the interface good to work with?  How do you feel it compares to Apple?   The main reason for the question is because they're using the same interface for Windows Mobile (touch screen phones), and I'm tempted to go down that route.

Read abit about them and it seems I have made the right choice going for apples mobile OS system, although given time I think this could catch up with it.

I sort of agree. I'd be very surprised if the Zune OS is half as capable as the iPhone OS.

Not sure. But be aware that the new Windows Phone Series 7 is based around Zune, so you might want to hold out for a consolidated device. Just saying...

To be fair, the Zune was a fantastic bit of kit, what Apple did at the time better than anyone and by some distance was advertising their products.

I don't recall a Zune advert... ever... yet I preferred mine to my iPod which I got after the Zune.

I got mine from The States, to be ahead of the crowds who would be buying it here...

Don't think it was even released in the UK.

Dedicated music players were a shit idea even in 2007 (when the original iPhone was released). Back then I had a pocket PC which I could surf the web on, listen to music, send emails, etc all in one device. I wasn't tied to iTunes either! I could even connect it to my phone via Bluetooth to make and received calls. I bet there's a shitload of ridiculously overpriced iPods in junk boxes in many a loft/cellar right now.

Don't know, it did seem that smartphones were on the rise - but at a certain point mp3 players were a bloody revelation.
As a generation that grew up changing batteries in Walkman's and lugging around mixtape cassettes - the idea of having all my shit in one device was a godsend.
My favourite player was without a doubt iPod Shuffle. It enabled me to make a 150 song mixtape, slide it in my pocket and go out and about skateboarding and listening to my favourite tunes without worrying about breaking my player if I end up on my ass. I also absolutely loved a big 32GB iPod I got later - it went everywhere with me and I only sold it few years ago. This may be a generational thing, but really those devices had a good run and they were important.

Agree with that, big, heavy, bright yellow Walkman Sports might have looked the business, but it was a pain in the arse compared to an MP3.

I'm still gutted I left my 2GB storage USB stick-looking Samsung MP3 player in a Croatian hotel in 2019. I get that most people just use their phone but I loved the idea of not wasting my phone battery, storage or data when abroad by sticking a load of classic albums on it.
