A bit of synchronicity going on here.

Just yesterday I was searching for an old B+W film I saw as a kid that I'd remembered featuring Liverpool and Birkenhead and that I remebered somehow had involved an Iron Lung, and I found it, The Magnet, but at the same time came across Morning in the streets too.

It is a super little film.

If you haven't seen it yet, I'd also highly recommend watching Distant Voices, Still Lives some time too, it's so evocative of Liverpool in that period.

Further to that above, I did wonder about the ability of the existing Port rail infrastructure ie the Canada Dock branch to be able to cope with the increased traffic but a quick browse around reveals the Olive Mount Chord reinstatement a few years ago with this in mind and also something of interest at the end of ....  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canada_Dock_Branch

There is also a serious suggestion to introduce passenger services on this line in the Local Transport Plan for Merseyside.[10] This was again mentioned in Merseytravel's 30-year plan of 2014.[11] The October 2017 Liverpool City Region Combined Authority update to the Long Term Rail Strategy mentions the re-opening of the line to passenger use with new stations at Anfield, Tue Brook and Edge Lane.[12]

So double track is being re-instated and it may well be electrified.

There's a lot of potential.  I saw a post on FB awhile back calling for the creation of the "Sgt Pepper Line", which would incorporate the Canada dock link and an "underground" station at Bank Hall.

One of the new trains is being set up on display at Lime Street at the moment.  They're going to be a mix of third rail and overhead wires, so they can switch from the local network to other forms of electrification.  The initial order of 58 units can be supplemented with an additional 15.  If there's serious interest in expanding the Merseyrail network - to say Skelmersdale - I imagine that's where the additional trains could be used.

I think I've mentioned it before, but what I'd really like to see is a re-establishment of an Overhead Railway.

Not as a simple replica, but like the OHR was when it was built, something really innovative.

Why not a high tech monorail into town from JL Airport and running to town and then up the coast up to Crosby way (and a park and ride situated there to serve visitors to town from the North), perhaps with a a 'Y' link serving Anfield or to an interchange. Like the DLR, they could be driverless and running every 10 minutes or so, perhaps even less at peak times, a sort of in the air and above the roads tram concept.

While I love railways, I think running passenger trains on a line sharing the projected rail traffic from Liverpool 2 could be problematic.

^ looks like a decent thriller that, What a way to go 8 story -fall and then squashed by a dock-locomotive :D

and The waterloo tunnel video is clever isn't it. Can't help but feel there is a future transport use for some of these tunnels and rail cuttings in the future for bikes, driverless cars or such like.

Don't think this has been shared before, but just stumbled across it. A driver's eye view of the Northern Line, Hunts Cross to Southport, from 1990.

It's absolutely fascinating.  No Liverpool South Parkway; No Brunswick Station, and Garston Station is still there.  Plus, you can see how the line goes upwards towards where the old high-level Central Station was.

Well worth a watch! :)

Found this pottering around on YouTube.  Who remembers the old 503?

It's remarkable to think that the new Class 777 trains will only be the fourth type of EMU to run on the Merseyrail network since it was first electrified in 1903.  I will likely not live to see them replaced. :o

I only remember them on the Wirral Line.  They were replaced by the 507/8s by the time I was 12. I remember them being lovely inside and hating the new trains because they seemed sterile, dull and boring.

The new trains are certainly a step up, but nothing has the character of the old ones.

They did a few years on the Kirkby line, wiki gives the dates as from 1977 and stopped in Oct 1981. Found this pic at Kirkby from 1978

I'd have travelled on them on the Wirral Line too, used to get the train to rock ferry and then get picked up or get a bus going to my Mums brothers in Little Sutton.

That takes me back. My grandad used to take us on that train from Crosby to the end of the line and back. Would have been mid 80s. Sometimes Hunts Cross, sometimes to West Kirby. Couldn’t see it with the way the camera was dead ahead but the train tracks went past the bottom of his garden.

There's lots of good stuff about the Wapping Tunnel on YouTube. Some serious talk about bringing part of it back into use too. Apparently, when they built the Northern Line, they dug header tunnels linking the line to Wapping between Central and St James' Place, just in case.
I don't always visit Lobster Pot.  But when I do. I sit.

Just found this fascinating clip of a lad who took a walk down what's left of the Wapping tunnel, from Crown Street/ Edge Hill down to the dock road/ Wapping. Railway history!

That was great, nice one mate. I had no idea it existed and the old photos were amazing.

Inspired by the brilliant foto threads here, couldn't find a video one & deserves a thread as there are some superb stuff out there.
Preferably old vids but anything interesting.  :)

Starting off with this one full of characters..

Merge if there is one out there & apologies if so.
Thanks for posting. Nice footage. Different times. Getting a bit nostalgic here  :( miss the old days in some ways.

The music reminded me instantly of New Order's "Technique" era though. Manc vibes on a Liverpool video! Sacrilegious!  ;D
