Liverpool Sound City 2013 first acts announced
By Peter Guy
Jan 16 2013

LIVERPOOL Sound City returns on May 2-4 showcasing some of the best emerging and acclaimed talent from across the globe.

The first acts announced to feature at the three-day Liverpool inner city showcase are The Walkmen, Reverend and the Makers, Toy and Egyptian Hip Hop.

Other acts include Murkage, Chapel Club, Fossil Collective, The 1975, Hawk Eyes,Swim Deep and The Family Rain.

Now officially the first new music festival in the UK calendar, Sound City is the first opportunity to catch the world's most exciting new talent in one place before they hit the summer festival circuit.

Last year saw early performances from the likes of Mercury Music Prize winners Alt-J, Jake Bugg and Django Django before the bands released critically acclaimed albums later in the year.

With over 350 bands appearing in over 25 venues across three days, the festival is an exhilarating snapshot of all that is vital in music right now.

Sound City also boasts a three day music, media and technology conference and is focused on bringing the best new music, film, art and more to Liverpool for three days of cultural discovery.

New Yorker's The Walkmen visit Liverpool on the back of their sixth studio albumHeaven while Sheffield's Reverend and the Makers bring their unique brand of rock, electro pop and funk.

London's psych rockers Toy, another band that featured at Sound City last year, delivered a critically-acclaimed 2012 eponymous debut album.

Egyptian Hip Hop recently released their debut album Good Don't Sleep; a record full of wonky pop while Murkage's raw electronic sound is built from spending nearly a decade of putting on some of the best parties Manchester has ever seen.

Among the panellists announced for the Sound City conferences are Everything But The Girl's Tracey Thorn and The Wombats.

Went last year, great way to see a lot of bands in a short period of time.  Concentrated on seeing bands I didnt know.  Slow Down Molasses were my 'find' - probably really well known by others.

Anybody buy the £30 3 day pass?  Last chance now, wondering is it worth it?

I got a £20 a few months ago, don't think that you'll spend better, to be honest.

Dexy's in the cathedral, alone, would normally cost more than that.

Bump.  Chuffed I managed to pick up a ticket off eBay for £20 last week.  Loads I want to see.

My definites are Skaters, Noah and the Whale, Drenge, AlunaGeorge on the Thursday.  Hopefully sandwich in Loom, Swim Deep, The 1975 and Bastille in somewhere in between.

Friday I've got Chloe Howl, Best Friends, The Walkmen, King Krule and The Tea Street Band as definites, hopefully get to Thee Oh Sees, Everything Everything, Bill Ryder Jones and Unknown Mortal Orchestra in between.

Not too much on the Saturday for me, only got Dexys, Stealing Sheep, Wet Nuns, Mount Kimbie and Bo Ningen pencilled in, only definite is Brolin.

I am back in Liverpool for this. Thee Oh Sees are the highlight for me but I have seen them a couple of times so looking forward to some new bands, Tea Street Band and Savages especially. Dexys in the Cathedral will be boss.

Started Sound City off last night with a brief visit - quite enjoyed Kiwi noisy popsters Popstrangers and then chanced it that Stealing Sheep wouldn't be all finished up in the lovely Epstein Theatre (my first time there) - they'd been delayed starting so I got most of their set - fabulous stuff, with a small guest marching band joining them at the end. Loads more tonight!

Drenge were awesome last night.  Invited half the crowd to stand on the stage, was top.  Had a nice time just wandering around into different places to see what was happening.  Enjoyed Skaters too.

AlunaGeorge, Bastille and Swim Deep were a bit crap.

Looking forward to King Krule and Savages tonight.

Drenge were awesome last night.

I actually logged on to post exactly that.  My ears are still ringing, my head is still mangled.

You cannot help but love any gig that ends with the guitarist balancing on top of the drum kit before falling over and taking most of the kit and drummer with him, while both he and drummer play on amidst howls of reverb and skittering percussion.

Not sure how well their brand of supercharged, punked up high speed high energy blues would go down on record but live in a sweaty club they fucking rocked.

Savages, Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Thee Oh Sees top my list for tomorrow.

Yep was top.

So far I've listened to their first single about 100 times over, can't get enough.  Will be interesting to see how the other tunes translate onto record.

Had a switch about, got Chloe Howl, hopefully try and catch a bit of The Anfield Wrap Modern Football Q&A thing, Lulu James, Best Friends, Charlie Boyer & The Voyeurs, The Walkmen, Splashh, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Theme Park, King Krule, Thee Oh Sees, Darwin Deez, Future Of The Left and On An On.

Super gutted as my band were supposed to be playing but had to cancel as the singer's lady went into labour in the afternoon! Still, got the 3 day wristband for nothing so not going to complain that much. Only reasons for cancelling shows are births and deaths I suppose so I hope we'll be forgiven for that.

I watched Loved Ones in the Cathedral. OK but perhaps a little too one-note for me. Interesting choice of cover so extra points for that. Great to see bands in there though. Meant to catch By The Sea but missed them due to us having too much fun in The Grapes in our between-bands bevvy session...

Then caught someone in the Shipping Forecast who were too cool to actually say their name, kind of grunge, didn't rate them. Singer was a good looking lad though.

Off to Afternaut at the Kazimier after that, who was good but for me totally eclipsed by Oneohtrix Point Never, who I really enjoyed. Sadly I was the only one in my group enjoying it so got hustled off to Kazimier Gardens round the corner to see...no-one.

Arrived after Sweet Jane and left to go home rather than staying out. I saw on the GIT blog that OPN had apparently 'lost' the crowd, and felt bad for having left half way through, but what can you do when it's a group of people you're with and they're not into it eh? I thought he was great.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Bill Ryder Jones, Melody's Echo Chamber, The Loud, Thee Oh Sees, Dominoes, Bird, I've got more clashes than a Millwall/West Ham game in the 70s.

I really enjoyed Oneohtrix Point Never too.

Thought it was good but a lone bloke summoning bleepy soundscapes from a computer is never going to hold the attention of the casual observer in the way that a live band can.  And as for leaving mid-set, that's the way of the world in a festival with so many bands playing overlapping sets.  There is always someone else you want to catch a bit of.

Savages were utterly brilliant last night. Deffo lived up to and surpassed the hype. Unknown Mortal Orchestra and TOY were both excellent as well - catching all of UMO meant being too late to get in for Thee Oh Sees at the Kaz, unfortunately but I compensated by seeing Temples for the first time. Darwin Deez were a bit of a letdown - couple of good numbers off the first album and some ace synchronised dance moves but I'll certainly not bother with the new album. Tea Street Band rounded off the night - not really my bag but I can see the appeal. Top top night out!

Third time I have seen Thee Oh Sees. Great band and awesome live. First thing I did when I got back in the house was buy tickets for them at Le Guess Who festival in Utrecht in two weeks time. That is how good they were.

Couldn't get in to see the Oh Sees so sloped off home. Saw The Loud who I really like, big brash songs like T-Rex/Oasis with bits of Blondie and The Beatles thrown in, great lyrics as well. Caught the end of Bird at the Epstein, little too quiet in there volume wise, but very nice stuff. Then at the other end, saw Unknow Mortal Orchestra, stood right at the front and had my ears blown. Bloody hell the fella can play guitar a bit. Wow. Tonight, Dexy's and Outfit for me please...

Thee Oh Sees are playing Leeds soon, not sure if it's sold out.

Ended up seeing Chloe Howl (not bad), The Anfield Wrap debate (top), Best Friends (really good), Charlie Boyer and the Voyeurs (ok), Wolf People (dull), Savages (dull), Splashh (great).

Really wanted to see King Krule but the friend I was staying with was staying out till 3am and I'd had a gig on Wednesday as well as a 3am finish the night before, work today and tomorrow so I was absolutely shattered so called it a night.  Jibbed off tonight too as I only really wanted to see Brolin.

Still, next year I'm going to book accommodation nearby early on and maybe book a day off work, think I saw about 19 bands for £20 in all, absolute bargain.  Had a great time.

Wowzers just how good were Savages.  I was buzzing so much off that gig I ended up diving into the moshpit for Thee Oh Sees,  the first time I've done that since CSS in the Korova in 2007ish.  It's just gonzo rock and roll from them but hell was it fun.  The Kazimier was just a froth of human limbs.

Trashed my trainers and remembered why docs were de rigeur in my 80's moshing days

Just got sorted for these - nice bonus that it slots in with the Bank Holiday weekend . Haven't been before , but wife and son went last year and highly recommended it .

Booked for my daughter this year . looking at the website , it's mostly 18 plus venues . My daughters 16 so hopefully wont have too much trouble getting in . Anyone know of any under 18's going in the past and having a hard time getting in ?

I remember getting ID'd once or twice, luck of the draw with the doormen more than anything I think.  I can't remember ever being ID'd at the Kazimier or anywhere that area.  Shipping Forecast and Zanzibar do more often than not and I don't think Leaf have ever ID'd me.

My issue with Sound City is the way the ticketing works. If i get a wristband or whatever it is, i would do it because there are specific bands i want to see, but as far as i can tell it's all first come first served - which means if a band i want to see is on late in a venue i would end up spending half the night in there just to be sure i'm getting in, potentially missing other stuff elsewhere.

I remember getting ID'd once or twice, luck of the draw with the doormen more than anything I think.  I can't remember ever being ID'd at the Kazimier or anywhere that area.  Shipping Forecast and Zanzibar do more often than not and I don't think Leaf have ever ID'd me.

Nice one - cheers mate !
Before you criticise a man, walk a mile in his shoes. Then, when you do criticise him, you're a mile away and you have his shoes.
