Little Girl Giant - A Titanic commemoration
« on: October 22, 2011, 09:21:02 am »

THE WORLD’S leading street theatre company is creating an event in Liverpool which will be the BIGGEST of its kind in the UK in 2012. Little Girl Giant will take to the city streets in a breathtaking street spectacular produced specifically for Liverpool by renowned marionette experts Royal De Luxe (RDL).
Liverpool City Council is currently working with RDL, pulling together plans for an extravaganza to welcome the giant, who has only been seen once before in the UK when she wowed 1.5million people in London at the Sultan’s Elephant event in 2006.

Talks have been taking place since 2006, when Artistic Director and founder of RDL, Jean-Luc Courcoult, visited Liverpool and was inspired by an emotional letter he saw in the Merseyside Maritime Museum written by a young girl whose father was a passenger on the tragic maiden voyage of the Titanic. As a result, Liverpool’s ‘Sea Odyssey’ was born.

This will be a magical piece of theatre, the likes of which many people will never have seen before.
COUNCILLOR JOE ANDERSON

From Friday 20 to Sunday 22 April 2012 a visually stunning, free event involving the Little Girl Giant will take over the city, telling a story inspired by the Titanic. Key city spaces will become focal points in a moving story of love, family and communication.

It will be one of the highlights of next year’s events in Liverpool to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic.

Leader of Liverpool City Council, Councillor Joe Anderson, said: “To work with such a world renowned company as Royal De Luxe is a real coup for Liverpool and it’s wonderful we can mark this important anniversary with an unforgettable event.

“The Titanic will always resonate with Liverpool, particularly as the name of the city was emblazoned on its stern and many of its crew were from the Merseyside area.  As it set out on its maiden voyage, it was the greatest vessel in the world, reflecting the city’s position as leading world port.

This collaboration is the latest involving Liverpool city council and exceptional artists.  In 2008 La Machine took over the city by bringing La Princesse (a 50 foot spider) to the streets, and in July this year, 3D experts The Macula from the Czech Republic transformed the Liver Building by projecting incredible images on to it, marking its centenary.

Director of Culture Liverpool, Claire McColgan, said: “One of the major successes of our European Capital of Culture year was filling the programme with moments of sheer magic, bringing together thousands of visitors and residents, sparking the imagination and getting people talking about art and culture.

“As a city, we put on exceptional free events and no matter what walk of life you’re from, you can experience something which transports you to another world – this is what great art achieves.

Liverpool is one of five Titanic cities holding events in 2012.  The other cities are Belfast, Southampton, Cherbourg and Cobh (Co. Cork).  Visit www.titaniccities.org.uk for more information.

If this is as half as good as 'the spider' then its going to be brilliant.

As fascinated as I am by the Titanic, the fact that it shares the same anniversary as Hillsborough lessens the impact for me.

All systems go, plans are coming together nicely. North Liverpool will benefit in particular from the visit (providing you won't mind being invaded by thousands for a couple of days).

Initially I'd heard she was being kept in the park thats why I knew Liverpools game against WBA would be moved as early as September, I think she's being kept down the docks somewhere now, not sure. But most of the activity is in and around north Liverpool so you won't have to travel far mate

There's actually Two with a story developing. The Stanley Park one will move in the direction of Breck road and Everton Road and remain in the area Friday & Saturday the story to bring them together will conclude around The Strand / Pier Head area on the Sunday.
Expecting crowds well above those seen for La Machine

That'll be some crowd then. Sure they said over 150,000 for La Princesse, possibly more!

I have it on good authority that she's   'sleeping'  in the park overnight ( between Everton Road/Hayworth Street, and Netherfield Road) so that fits in with the above.

I must say though, if She's walking around Anfield, then she'd better be careful, and not step in the humongous amount of dog shit thats prevalent in the area.

They were setting up barriers in Stanley Park on my home yesterday, so should be more progress today. I just find it a bit odd that they have set up a Stanley Park Festival site yet when you go to it, it says it's coming soon - needs to get a move on with it less than 48 hours away now! ::) And still haven't seen any details of the dog's route, or is he just with her?

I'm an old curmudgeon admittedly but its just a doll on guy-ropes dragged round the town isnt it? With some vague reference to the titanic thrown in? Would be more fitting, if it is titanic related, to have something simple at the old white star line building on james st/goree.

Just feels like people spunking the end of their funding out on mad stuff.

Think it is quite good to be honest - there's a video linked further up the page. But it has nothing to do with the Titanic and I'd preferred it if they hadn't tried to make that connection.

Is it worth the money? I don't know. On one hand, with the cuts the council is (or has to) making, you'd think every penny should go into public services, maybe doing a school up or whatever. But on the other hand, I think investing into art and culture is very important, especially when everything else is looking bleak. People need something to enjoy.

Thank you for your considered response. I've watched the vid and, whilst I dont disagree with investing in art and culture at all, i think this is a case of them having an idea and using lpool/titanic to exploit it. The company seems to have done this show before but just put different tassles on it to fit, its not special, its a spin off for them.

Just hope the weather is decent for this over the weekend! She's going to look amazing walking round our streets. I've seen pictures of her dog, but not seen any of the uncle yet. Can't wait :)
Have they announced the dog's route? I was wondering where he'll be, or will he just be with the girl? Ta

Dont know the dogs full route.  But he will be with her in Everton Park as she arrives and has her siesta.  He runs around the paths a while and then goes to join her.

the out of the blue community programme are having there picnic in the park to welcome the girl.  Kids from faith primary and community groups from WECC are walking up from 11pm.  there will be performance and picnic in the purple tent from about 12.30

apparently this is the 2nd biggest tourist attraction this year after the olympics. not sure on the expected figures though

They reckon there could be 250,000 coming to watch over the 3 days

She's 30ft high and her uncle is 50ft high! Should be some sight this. Thinking of doing round Anfield down to Oakfield Road, then off into town and see her again later on in the afternoon.

If it's as half as good as La' Princesse this will be amazing.

If you were going once over the weekend, where and when do you think would be best? I can't decide.

Probably Sunday as both of them are together by the looks of it, though a shorter day.

Try this and click on each of the days and it'll give you an itinerary.

Stopping it going into disrepair would be a great start, maybe do something with it! Astounding that with all the Titanic centenary themed events taking place that this building remains empty.

Is the Sea Odyssey public funding or private? I thought It was private to be honest (although I may be getting mixed up with the big bugger off spider)
