That sir, depends on what variety of female you seek.  Students are in Concert Square, hen nights/21sts etc are Mathew Street...

Where do those who are in between the ages of being a student and part of a hen party go?

What places are good to go around Matthew St as not too familiar with it at all?
Stabbed your boss in the back, the man who made you fucking European Champions, and got in the man you wanted as manager. Just because Rafa wouldn't fucking cuddle you enough and fucking wank you off while telling you how fucking great you are.

Forgive me for these reviews, as I do some of these venues, regularly, and some of them not at all, and of course I'm sure other RAWKites will put me straight.  ;)

All around Cavern Walks. all within 250 yards.

Revolution. -   Mix of ages from late teens to thirties (and sometimes older)
Remeniss -      90s bar. not been in recently, but always seems a bit empty.
Old Skool -     Not been in it, but seems like an 80s style bar - stag/hen heaven
Smokie Mo's - Older music style - stag/hhen heaven
Hardy's -       not been in
Glass Onion - not been in
Quarry Quarter -      younger more funky style music, usually played at XXXX decibels and shared with the whole neighbourhood.
White Star -  Traditional pub, good ale
Tube-80s bar - just what it says on the tin.
Flanigans Apple - Liverpool twist on a traditional Irish bar. Live band on downstairs playing a mix of all kinds, and usually a good piss up and sing song.
Grapes -         Traditional pub, with a 4am licence.  A hell of a knocking shop in the early hours with all kinds of gargoyles, up for a good time.
Lennon's bar - Downstairs bar with a mix of ages -  mostly from mid 20s upwards
Erics -        not been in since it reopened last month. Remarketing itself as a live music venue.
Flares -       mix of all ages, playing older - stag/hen heaven
Cavern Club
Cavern Pub  - both Cavern's lean heavily on 60s/70s music, but not exclusively.  Depending on when you're there, you also get on some great live bands in both venues.
Boogie Nights. - 70s-80s-90s music
Rubber Soul. - big open, mixed bar - not been in anytime recently other than watching football.
Moniques -  Not 100% sure, but looks like a camp cabaret kind of joint.  Being that it's on the edge of the gay quarter of town. - not been in there.

So as you can see, Mathew Street trades on the more 60s/70s/80s/90s/ style of music, but there's stilll some great nights to be had around there.

Also take into account. only 250 yard around the corner is Victoria Street, whith a host of more fashionalble clubs and bars......plus the gay quarter part of town....if thats what floats ya boat. ;)

If you are up for a laugh, a good drinking sesh, a bit of dancing, and loose women, you really can't go wrong, as the Mathew St. area has a bit of everything, yet Just around the corner within 5mins walk , you have a whole host of more fashionable bars.

Reminisce is a 90's bar, until about 7.30pm, then it turns to shitty modern dance/R&B music. Old Skool is more 90's dance.

Which is exactly why I don't frequent them.

I thought most 90s music was shit, first time around.  I certainly don't need to relive it again. ;)

Power cut mate, in that whole area. Went the cracke to see if the match was on  but it was full of locals drinking in the pitch black. Brilliant. Had to watch the match in the flute. More Man City fans than reds in there.

THE management team behind well-known Liverpool music venue The Masque today said that despite its closure it was business as usual at their other popular city centre bars.

The Masque nightclub on Seel Street has shut down as it is no longer deemed financially viable.

Directors Graham Clarke and Peter Antonio, who also run Heebie Jeebies and The Peacock, said that despite its popularity the business was not profitable. The pair are hoping to sell the lease on.

They said that although the club nights and live gigs pull in huge crowds the costs to host the shows outweigh the money made from takings on the bar and the cut they receive from ticket sales.

Mr Clarke said: “It’s just no longer profitable to operate the venue. It costs more to run it than what we make.”

The Masque’s closure is the second blow for Mr Clarke and his partner who filed to wind up the Jacaranda Club three weeks ago.

The Jacaranda bar was best known as the venue which first hosted The Beatles.

It was founded in 1957 by Allan Williams, the Fab Four’s first manager and opened in September 1958 with John Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe and Paul McCartney as frequent customers.
Administrator Milner Boardman and Partners were brought in to dissolve the company.

In June, the same insolvency firm was also asked to dissolve other companies – including Heebie Jeebies and the Peacock – owned by The Jacaranda Club Ltd directors after the firms racked up historical debts owed to HM Revenue and Customs and Marston’s Brewery.

The businesses were deemed insolvent and the best course of action was to sell them as going concerns so they could continue trading.

Peacock (NW), a limited company set up by Mr Clarke and Mr Antonio, bought the assets of all companies and the money owed to Marston’s was “rolled over” to Peacock (NW).

Mr Clarke said: “We have done everything we can to keep the bars open and pay back our debts. We bought The Masque before the financial crash but we can no longer afford to keep it open.”

All upcoming gigs at the club were cancelled or will be moved elsewhere.

Chibuku and Circus club night promoter Richard McGinnis said that he is exploring options to continue to operate their Christmas shows at The Masque.

He said: “Obviously, we are very upset that The Masque has closed but we are hoping that we can still hold our scheduled gigs there.”

Heebie Jeebies and The Peacock are still operating as normal.

Had many a face-swinging night in The Masque, with Circus and their Halloween bashes one of the highlights of my night-venturing life in town.

Shame The Masque has shut. It's the beginning of the end, even selling the lease is temporary as it isn't profitable.

Indeed. Carl Cox and Loco Dice amongst others being personal highlights.

Think in the next 12 months they'll have Nation regularly for their nights.

When they started hosting it at Nation was when it went downhill for me. Used to be there every other week, but when it moved to Cream, their was to many diveys in there.

Got so big at one point it was one of those places every one went to, except majority who ended up in there was not even into their dance music. I regularly seen girls all dolled up, looking bored off their head. Then the lads looking for a scrap.

Since it moved back to Bar Fly and on a Friday I've never been due to the 'Nation' crowd.

Anyways sad to hear such a place go. One of many that got ruined when the 'It' crowd started going, Garlands, Society and now the Masque. Such a shame.

devestated!   Literally my favourite venue in the world!   (Carl Cox is also of the same opinion apparently)

I went last Friday, and Sven Blew the roof off the place.  Fanchuilli in the loft was good as well!

When i look back and think of the place, i'll think of when Paul Kalkbrenner played in there last boxing day!.... one of the best moments of my life...

Gutted isnt the word...and i hate nation as a venue...so its' all fuked

bit dramatic ...maybe....

The music on the Circus nights means a trip to Nation is now unavoidable.

Absolutely devoed that The Masque is going though. Speaking of Fanciulli, him dropping his mix of "2 Dots" in there last year will live with me forever.

Another fine little venue shutting down.  >:(

Fucking hell, thought that place was just starting to take off properly with the recent LMW and Americana things.  Brilliant venue, must have cost a fortune to do up as it has been.  It would be criminal to close it now.

Tories, cuts and Liverpool eh...  when you're my age this all looks depressingly familiar.  And if you are a Tory voter on this site or following this club, or even claiming to care for this city then you can just fuck right off, right now.

It's doing my head in because  these are all my venues y'know, i'm not interested in going to Modo etc. In the last year we've had the Jac ruined then shut down, The Metropolitan and now the Masque and the CUC. It seems like if you're in to the live music scene you are getting bummed at the minute. Weren't we capital of culture the other year? It's a friggin shambles.

EDIT: with regards to the tory remark - Last year I was walking back from the 5 nil Birmingham game, I was walking towards Scotty to get into town. By the park fucking Michael Howard walks right beside me in a Liverpool tie. Only me and this other fella got onto it. I am ashamed of myself that I didn't even call him a knob at least. I couldn't help think how Ironic it was we were both walking past the Pitz, past all these really fucking run down council estates (where i grew up) and this fucker and his government played a massive role in keeping these places rundown and 'out of the way'. Also suprised that none of the other thousands of reds I was walking with didn't say nothing. He even had a fucking beige lackey pulling his suitcase, clearly from Fulham, clearly shitting his undies.

Coming down liverpool again in a couple of weeks for a birthday and after some good boozers
we usually get off the train at lime street then into ma eggertons for a couple then head of steam then its usully down to mathew street(cavern ect....)
There must be a few decent boozers we are missing out on
We ended up in rileys last time - thats the sort of pub were after not shite like yates or hogs head
but dont really want to travel to far from lime street because of getting back for the last train
like i say there must be shed loads of quality boozers that we have never been in because no one the area that well

When you come out of Lime St. station, instead of going right, to Ma Edgies, either go out the front of the station and down St.Johns lane, which will lead you onto the likes of....

Doctor Duncans, Ship & Mitre, Vernon Arms, The Lion Tavern, Rigsby's etc. etc.   All great drinking pubs, and not full of plastic lager shite.

Alternatively, come out of the station and go Left along Lime Street, as far as The Dispensary (five minute walk) which is another good ale pub. From there ask the bar staff or punters, because not far from there is a hand full of excellent drinking dens such as...

The Roscoe Head, The Philharmonic, Ye Crack, The Grapes, The Pilgrim etc. etc.   On this crawl though, unless you know where to find the pubs, you may struggle, as they are all hidden up little side streets.

You might find this page/website of some use. It's the Liverpool camra site, and has the 'pub passprt' (a list/guide to all of the real ale pubs). plus a couple of pub walks etc.

Ship and Mitre - just over Dale St from the tunnel entrance.
Vernon Arms - on the same road on your way up to Rigby's
White Star - just off Matthew Street
Bier - Newington - just behind where Lewis's used to be
