club LAZY GENIUS is back this Monday night at MOJO.... FREE ENTRY every Monday night, quality live bands... both local and from around the country and drinks offers!

This Monday....

BEING JO FRANCIS - http:/www.myspace.com/beingjofrancis

QUATERMASTER - http://www.myspace.com/quartermasterband

CRUSHING BLOWS - http://www.myspace.com/crushingblowsmusic

Being Jo Francis are a great band... they've recently moved up from Coventry to ply their trade in the best music city in the world. Quatermaster are a bit of a throw back, brilliant 60s ish guitar pop and a Johnny B Goode cover nailed! Finally Crushing Blows are an experimental noise 2 piece from Derbyshire but it won't be their first time in Liverpool having played at Mello Mello before.

Bit of a barren month January Connie but I'll keep an eye out.  Any preferences music wise?
Understood, Kev and I know there usually isn't much on anywhere at the beginning of a work week so not expecting a lot of options.   Music-wise pretty much anything is fair game to be honest.   Frankly if there are any decent jazz/blues places about (as well as rock of course), I'd be interested.

^^Thanks for posting that link, Tom - will also keep an eye on that site as time gets closer.

Good gig by the Coral last night at Mountford Hall. Highlight definatley mass participation of the crowd in Pass It On, one more time

when it's done,
and all this has gone,
just find a feeling
pass it on

Great song, great group.

Miles Kane is playing a 2011 Sound City launch gig at Kazimier in February, might be worth checking out.
......and could he play!

If it was the same one who appeared at the Philharmonic, I think it was Neville Skelly. Not too sure, as I was a bit late in arriving for it.

Bit ropey to start with, the "old pictures of Liverpool" visuals was the highlight early on but they grew into it nicely and by the time we got to the encore of Altogether Now the place was rocking.  Great night out as the post-gig secret rave / warehouse party was great

Just looking through the thread and noticed a few gigs at the Phil.

Went to see the Saw Doctors there about 3 years ago , and must admit I wasn't impressed . We were up in the Gods and the rising heat was unbearable . Also think at the time that it was either a pain in the arse to get served or you couldn't take drinks back to your seats. Also a bit staid for me as a gig venue .

Wouldn't go back there for a gig to be honest. Of the main smaller venues , I'll stick with the Mountford Hall or the Academy.

Fuckinell, think the Phil is easily the best venue in Liverpool, remember seeing Paul Brady tehre s few years ago and was great. Saw Costello & Lightning Seeds/ Squeeze in the past few weeks and just think that it is excellent. I know what you mean about a bevvy but sometimes it suits and that has been the case when I`ve been in the boxes in the Phil.

Might have had a bad night mate, I would definitely give it another try!

They're both huge.  The Phil is a good venue if the band is right for it.  Iron and Wine there next year will be fucking great.

Gruff Rhys to play the Kazimier next Feb as well folks

He did have a bad night... it was the Saw Doctors mate .... ;)

Seriously though going to see a pub band in an orchestral concert hall is always going to be a bit shite.  I don't think you'd quite get the full finesse of Petrenko and the Phil in O'Neills either.  Horses for courses.

Points taken chaps !

Might have had a bad night mate, I would definitely give it another try!

Maybe it was just a bad night - the heat at the back made it really uncomfortable. I'll give it another try , but will get seats in the stalls and pick the band to suit the venue.

As for The Phil itself , I love the place.

They're both huge.  The Phil is a good venue if the band is right for it.

Poorly worded on my part - I meant smaller venues as opposed th the Echo Arena . They are indeed a good size .

Seriously though going to see a pub band in an orchestral concert hall is always going to be a bit shite.  I don't think you'd quite get the full finesse of Petrenko and the Phil in O'Neills either.  Horses for courses.

That was partly the point of my post . Some acts just don't suit the Phil as a venue .

He did have a bad night... it was the Saw Doctors mate .... ;)

  :) :) :)

I went to see Editors at the Phil and had a great time, you can't let go in the way you can at the academy but the atmosphere was still good and the quality of the sound was excellent, certainly wouldn't put me off going to another gig there but then I was nearer the front so its more difficult to judge what its like at the back.

Don't suppose you know anywhere that might have any tickets left? When I search online all sites seem to come up sold out. Anywhere in town selling them by any chance?

Curse my disorganised nature! Years ago I would have been right on this. These days I seem to discover most gigs the day after they happen...

Have a look at the Harvest Sun page on Facebook and sign up for their mailing list mate.  Last I heard there were a few tix left at Probe in town but that was a few weeks ago. It is worth getting on the Harvest Sun mailing list though because for previous sell outs they have sold a few tix on the day that had been earmarked for the guest list...

OK cheers mate, sounds good. Will have a check in Probe tomorrow anyway just in case as well. And inevitably leave £40 odd lighter as I find a bunch of indispensible new (or 'new old'!) records...

Bollocks.  If being in Brighton on a stag do and missing the derby was not bad enough...   seems you have a choice Connie.  The Barfly/Masque is just up the road from the Zanzibar about 150 yds on the opposite side of the road.

I went to the Bruce Springsteen 10 Bands 10 Minutes, it was brilliant.
The 10 bands 10 minutes nights are sorted out by the quite marvellous Married To The Sea.  If you've not seen them, seriously check them out.  I think Mark Morriss of the Bluetones is doing something, but the highlight for me is the return of Elle s'appelle.  In my mind they are probably the best band to have come out of Liverpool in the last 10 years.  Shame I can't go really...
the trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin I keep sliding off to the side
