Then Americana 10 tomorrow at the same venue.  Mark Eitzel and Richmond Fontaine the stand outs.

Never heard of that before! Bit late to make plans for it now though :-(

Saw Terry DiNeros band yesterday in Beeeerkenn'ed - splendid. Some great songs performed fantastically.

What I liked was that there were no 'stars' in the band - you had four lads fantastically accomplished on each piece of kit - the drumming, lead guitar and rhythm (Swapped over which was even nicer) and some spot on Bass combined very, very well. And the singing was spot on as well.

Also nice to see Terry's lad do a cracking rendition of "Whiskey in the Jar" - I think it was that.. I had had a few by then!

Apparantly without much practice as well.

Fantastic stuff. Really enjoyed it.

Billy Bragg at the New Picket tonight - haven't seen him for more than 5 years . Looking forward to it - he was one of the first proper gigs I went to, back in 88 at the Royal Court. I think this may be the very first gig I have ever driven to as well...

Mr Bragg was in excellent form last night - some top hip hop support from Sound Of Rum and Akala as well. Especially good welcome for "Never Buy The Sun", and he also referenced the action to get rid of Hicks & Gillett (in comparison with the Occupy movement), our game tomorrow against "Abu Dhabi County" (while his Hammers have the real Derby County, apparently) and the 2006 Cup Final

Not Thursday , but he's supporting Kasabian at the Echo arena on Sunday so I'll catch him then .

Also , Deaf School are playing Birkenhead's Pacific Road Arts Centre on 23rd December .

Widowspeak last night at Mojo. Brilliant band. Simple - two guitars and minimal tiny drumkit. Loved it, although had no cash to buy their excellent debut LP on limited red vinyl. Damn!

Went to a small gig Wednesday at Leaf on Bold Street, mate of mine was playing. Supporting Meg Baird. really good, it was. Top acoustic sets. Love the venue too. Well worth a look in future.

gutted to hear the CUC is closing down in January....as well as the Masque theatre and the Jacaranda....add the closure of Daily Post to that list and November has been a twat of a month for Liverpool's popular culture...

I know mate. Gutted.  Such a brilliant, if criminally underused, facility.  Anyone know what will happen to the building?

If it is just going to sit there empty then I think they should just turn it over to local promoters to use for free.

Its a stunning venue...a genuine alternative space to anything else in the city......underused and misused IMO.....the cinema could/should have been another FACT...and there hasnt been so much live music going on in Liverpool for a very long time so I cant understand why they couldnt make the facility work on that score....I make you right - hand it over to the Harvest Sun lads and let them do something with it.......

really gutted about the masque as well..probably my favourite live venue in town......odd/grim that in a city with 3 Uni's and over 50,000 students - a tailor made alternative music club - slap bang in the middle of the student area -  cant survive?.......I believe its owned by the same people who also own the doomed Jacaranda.....so expect their other venture - Heebejeebies to bite the dust in the not too distant

Think some of the 4th floor venues and the bar would be superb for Harvest Sun gigs.  The two main venues could be used by the Evol folks and would mean they didn't have to use the O2.  Think some of the club night promoters like Circus and Chibuku could get some great use out of that venue too.

For the gallery floors I'd turn them over to local designers as free studio / workshop space.

Macca was obviously fantastic on Tuesday, but there's a separate thread about that! Space were alright last night - never been a massive fan, but they put on a decent show, looked to be having a great time and got great support from the audience. Not a bad way to end the gig-going year

So here's my Top 5 gigs of the year - would be interested to read others (especially regular goers like VdLS)

1. Paul McCartney (Echo Arena) - it's got to be a good year if Macca is on the list but not #1. The man still has it in spades at 69
2. Wooden Shjips (Kazimier) - a simply stunning gig. Didn't know them well when I went but they blew my proverbial socks off
3. The Fall (Stanley Theatre) - at their very finest. Shame the new album has underwhelmed after that
4. Billy Bragg (New Picket) - great to see him again. Best singalong gig of the year.
5. Roddy Frame (Kazimier) - first time ever seeing him and he didn't disappoint, in my new favourite venue

Honourable mentions to Drive-By Truckers at the Academy, Vic Godard at Williamson Tunnels, Connan Mockasin at Bush Hall in that there London, the Bunnymen doing Ocean Rain at the Phil, and even Take That in Hamburg...

Widowspeak (Mojo) - Brilliant little Brooklyn three-piece, Mazzy Star but upbeat vibes
Lanterns On The Lake (Leaf) - Great widescreen folky
Elephant Stone/By The Sea (Kazimier) - Sitars and songs, good night
Kurt Vile (Kazimier) - Took an age to come on but worth all the fucking around and waiting
The Cubical (Mello Mello) - still the best local live act for a dance IMO.

Lots of good ones this year.
My mates all went to see Judy Collins and absolutely raved about that one but I missed it. Missed Wooden Shjips as well, was kicking myself for that but did get a mate to pick up a blue vinyl from their merch stall so not all bad.

Jonathon Richman is on as well, think it's the Sunday of the same week. Can't afford both though!

Can anyone in here tell me anything about a group named Outfit?  They're on a bill here in NY with The La's in March as part of a Liverpool-NYC music exchange/expo.

One Google hit produced a "Liverpool's most talked-about band in a decade" quote....for real?  One can't help being skeptical when you hear that but I'm more than willing to be convinced.  Any info welcome!

Yeah that's probably bollox.  As bad as they are I'm pretty sure groups like The Wombats were getting a lot more attention.  I've heard a couple of their songs and think they're fairly decent.  The band are only now getting picked up by the likes of NME, so they're definitely one to watch.

I think it's more down to the fact that nobody has really been making it out of Liverpool so they've had a lot of hype.  I'd pop along though.

Connie. Seen Outfit once and they were pretty good despite the sound being godawful. Who else is playing at Sound City NY? You should come over in May for Sound City here.

Would love to, Kev, but not sure finances will permit...especially as I may need to come that way before then.

"Other Liverpool bands" is all that's up now re SCNY aside from Outfit and The La's.  It's only a one-day conference here with the music showcase in the evening.  Will certainly let you know once any other details are announced.

Saw The Lightning Seeds at the O2 a couple of weeks back, who were entertaining.

Last night was The War On Drugs at the Kazimier, who were excellent. Unfortunately I had to leave during a guitar freak-out in what was allegedly their last song (though that was the third song in a row they'd introduced like that). Especially loved getting two ringers in from the crowd to adde extra guitar to "Brothers" - they seemed to be enjoying themselves! Good support from Weird Dreams who'd have fitted in with the mid-80s Paisley Underground or on Creation

Went last night as well.

Thought Weird Dreams were a little weak, lots of Smiths/Cure guitar sounds but none of the memorable songs. Nice Gretsch.

The War On Drugs, first half of the set was mind-blowingly good I thought, I don't know the name of the song but the one that turned into a bit of a house rave-up with the mental guitar about halfway through the set (after the slow Spacemen 3 plus harmonica ambient one) was the highlight for me.

After that I think they played a few too many songs to be honest - they did end on a high though, despite as you say having three 'this is our last song' moments. Just felt like the pacing of the set was slightly off - it had a nice build and then plateau'd a bit for me, with an excellent blast at the end.

I'm off to NYC on the 9th March to see the Sound City gig on the 12th. Getting bad vibes that The La's may pull out. Gutted if they do - it'll hardly be a wasted trip, but still.
Have to make do with the 11th St Bar on the Saturday morning instead!!

Veronica Falls at Leaf last night. My first time there - nice little venue with decent lagers on tap as well (Estrella, Kirin, Red Stripe, Amstel). First band (By The Sea) were ok - interesting singer, better than expected. Then Novella who I was expecting more from having listened to a couple of tracks online - male drummer + three females. Best song by a country mile was their cover of Mudhoney's Mudslide (the art of the great cover seems to be forgotten by many bands). Then the main act who were pretty good - a few new songs that fitted right in with the stuff from the album
