They had one in the Fiveways too.
They did indeed, when it was a Higsons pub (great beer was Higsons). I remember it well

What pubs are decent in town that are near a bookies and wont be to packed and will show the racing/Grand National on Sat 9th April?

Aware of Rileys & The Beehive on Mt Pleasant St so any other suggestions ?

Thanks  :wave

The Exchange, Old Hall Street - decent enough boozer, but on the outskirts so doesnt normally get too packed - and directly opposite a Willy Hills.

Be in Liverpool for the United away game. Going over for the boxing which is at Aintree also on the Saturday.

Just wondering how far from the Middle of town Aintree is and if there are any boozers near Aintree worth watching it in?

Aintree is miles outside Town but only about a 15 minute train ride, trains are frequent, only pub i know in Aintree is the Sefton Arms on the Ormskirk Road by the Racecourse entrance.

The Black Horse on County is decent for the footy, got loads of tellies and it's on the way to Aintree from town.
There's a pub by the racecourse that has been done up recently (I can't remember the name, the queens maybe?) that I assume will have the match on as well if you'd rather be by the racecourse.

Apart from a couple of bus routes my knowledge of Aintree isn't that good, however train, every 15 minutes until 7pm then every half an hour, any Ormskirk train from Central or Moorfields last train back from Aintree is 11.35pm.

If the FM misses the last train taxi would probably be about £10-£15 back to Town.

It's about 6/7 miles to Aintree. Couple of pubs in Walton Vale just down from the racecourse might have it on- The Black Bull and The Farmers Arms. The one right by the racecourse is indeed the Queens, you'd see it when you come out of Aintree station and look to your right.

Train would be your best option. If you got off the stop before Aintree- Orrell Park- theres a couple of pubs by there that will probably have it on- The Windsor and Joey Orrs. The Black Bull and The Farmers Arms are a bit further down Walton Vale, going towards Aintree. There's a social club right by the stop after Aintree- Old Roan- called The Oldy. I think they have the footy on. The pub there is now shut though and I can't vouch for what the club is like! If you wanted to get a bus to Aintree you'd have to get one going through to Maghull, to be honest, I'd get the train myself.

The Sefton's been gone for a while  - it's the Aintree Tandoori Shop now (or something...)

The Black Horse is good (it's my local) but it's also a Blue pub, so don't expect much sympathy from your fellow drinkers if Man Utd beat us.

In town for the match tonight and thinking of sampling the Camp and Furnace after hearing a few good things. Any ideas what the best time is to get down there for a good seat?

Not sure if it will be rammed being a monday.

Really enjoyed it! Going to be our go to place for the match when we are in town for it now. Got there about an hour before kick off and got a decent table near the front. Could imagine it being much more packed on a weekend, although it was rammed at kick off.

Screen is massive and has speakers all around with the commentary on.

Offers on Pacifico for £3 a bottle and they do Pizzas that they bring over to your table.

Does anyone actually know the current legal position for pubs showing the 3 o'clock Saturday games on their screens? I've been Googling it and it looks very much as if it is "officially" illegal and that there are checks being carried out by the EPLSky/BT Gestapo but many pubs just take the risk and show the games anyway...

They're clamping down on them a lot of late, couple of my locals got done the back end of last season. Surprised pubs haven't just started doing a membership scheme of sorts between 3-5.

Remember the landlady from Portsmouth winning this type of case a few years ago, unless it's changed since then SKY & the Premier League can't take any action other than for breach of copyright for showing the Premier League logo & Premier League theme.

Basically all of the pub type places - usually at least 2-3 will have it.

What places in town are guaranteed to have the match on on Sunday (not on Sky or BT)?

My Dad is getting on a bit now so we can't traipse around 5 or 6 pubs looking as we have done before.

And he will need seat!

The Excelsior, Dale Street - cracking pub to watch the game, should get a seat for your old fella and the ale is decent too.

Seeing that I've passed my ST on to a younger lad for the last few seasons, I doubt I'll get much chance of a final ticket. Assuming I don't, I'm intending to travel down to Liverpool on the Sunday morning (I live in the North East) book into a Premier Inn and watch the match at a bar in town. I'm guessing all the bars mentioned before will be showing the match, but are there any particular ones that will be making a bit more of it because it is a final?

ps - Isn't the Vernon Arms a bluenose bar?

I touch down in the city just around kick-off time on tuesday night. I guess I need something to eat, and as far as I know the game isn't on english television. I enjoyed watching the Premier League games at Carraghers Cafe Sports a couple of years ago while getting something to eat, but I know they are closed, so where can I watch Leicester-Liverpool, while getting something good to eat on tuesday night? It would be great if it's as close as possible to Albert Dock or Lime Street.

Thanks in advance :)

The Excelsior on Dale Street is a good pub only a short walk from Lime Street Station, about 5 minutes. They'll be showing the game and they do food as well, I haven't eaten there so I don't know what the food is like but standard pub fare I imagine.

Rileys Sports Bar is across the road from Lime Street Station. They sometimes show non-televised matches in there. As mentioned above the Excelsior is good too.
