Posted on a site which is only about Liverpool stuff with no info about it..could be anywhere i suppose.

The for sale signs on the cars are labelled Bowmaker at the bottom, I think the Gauntlet sign seen at the rear of the plot is for a used car protection policy company.
I've tried a google but nothing is showing for used cars liverpool bowmaker, long gone like many a used car plot I expect. Many would change their names every few years and move location, I imagine in some cases to avoid the wrath of previous customers.
The Reg plates J on the red Austin 1100/1300 and the L on the Escort are early 70's so a trawl through an Echo or Post from that era or around '75, or an old telephoe book, might give an address for a business of that name.
There's a Wolseley 1800 in there, 4th along, we had one of those in 1980-81, dirt cheap to buy by then and a fantastic car for long journeys, a huge but comfy mini with great handling until the hydroelastic unit went on one rear wheel and it had to go to the great scrap heap in the sky though I remember we drove round with a wooden block jammed in the suspension to keep the vehicle level for a few months, the way you did in those days..
I don't do polite so fuck yoursalf with your stupid accusations...

I'm wondering if it's Woodend Ave, just past the junction of Alderman Rd.

Do you mean here John?... https://goo.gl/maps/ShmXKmgERzm

In the original photo there's two rows of houses just visible through the trees and with white gable ends. There appears to be only the one now and no white gable ends on it.

The difficulty I see with that location is those original houses look as if they could be quite new for the time, perhaps 60's built, so I can't imagine they'd have been demolished so soon, though it is Liverpool and stranger things have happened.

That building behind the car lot in the old photo looks like a typical old 60's office block, the sort the DHSS would have dotted around, though it looks a bit run down even then.

On a separate theme, I was in town at the weekend for an old school reunion in West Derby and in the Taxi on the way up from Lime St going through Tuebrook, I noticed that the Carlton has finally been demolished. Shame it couldn't have been re-purposed but I know it had been left to rot for far too long to make any other use viable now.

Looks like you might be right for a change Gulley: there are adverts for Gauntlet Cars in the Echo on Findmypast in 1974 and 1977, but I can only get the broken biscuits version 'cos I'm not a member. Someone with a FMP subscription would likely be able to get the address from the ad.
Bowmaker appears to have been the finance company.

Interesting pic J/G yep, after a bit of research meself i reckon it's not from this neck of the woods.
Bowmaker is probably an arm of Lloyds finance?
My initial thoughts were that it was somewhere like Speke hall road but after looking at those car registrations & i could be awry here but back in that era cars were more inclined to remain in the area registered?
The area code for the Austin & the Escort could be from the Surrey area..

I wasn't right Tsar, I'd got it the wrong way round. ;D

I'd found a reference to Gauntlet insurance out of Manchester who provided car cover so I'd assumed that was what that sign was about. I think at one time my Dad may have had a car insurance with them or at least I do remember some kind of brochure with that mailed fist on it though possibly it was just an early form of mailshot being delivered in the post (or maybe just a demand for owed money with an implied threat.. ;) )

As for Bowmaker it's confusing as I had found a Bowmaker F1 team back in the early 60's, the era of Jim Clarke which I thought might prove a lead though it appears they might well have been associated with the Lloyds subsidiary that used Bowmaker as part of their trading name.

I reckon you're old Echo adverts might well clear it up.

I tried using the Ancestory site last night, it's apparently got almost all the old GPO/BT telephone directories for the UK on there, but you need to have registered on it to get any useful information out of it. Don't know if anyone on here is registered that could do the search on the Liverpool Phone book, I suspect around 1975 might be a best guess.

Some cryptic answers here if you put 'gauntlet cars' in the search and filter for Liverpool Echo.

https://www.britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk/?ds_kid=43700029750963433&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIsoetztON3gIVRed3Ch3f-gi_EAAYASAAEgKBj_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Seems Gauntlet was just a British Leyland used car outlet.

If you look here..

http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/registrations/ph.htm

..you can see the Austin was registered in April 1971.

..and back to here..

http://nice-reg.co.uk/info/area-of-issue-codes-for-classic-suffix-and-prefix-number-plates.html

..with the PH in the reg you see it was registered in Surrey.

Same for the Escort which was registered August 1972 in Surrey.
Maybe it is just a coincidence.

The Wolsley APB would be Surrey too.

Not a photo this, but a heads up for anyone interested in Liverpool history.

The British Library is currently digitising its entire collection of newspapers - which represents the greatest collection in the world by some considerable distance. They've done about 30 million pages so far and probably have twenty to thirty times as many pages to go. But the city that has been covered best so far is Liverpool. You can access the entire run of Echos from the 1879 to 1999, as well as the Liverpool Daily Post and some of the 19th century Liverpool papers. It's a godsend to anyone interested in researching the city's history, and not bad for looking up old football reports too.

You need to pay a fee to get full access, but it's very good value I think:

Anybody?  Not a clue here.

https://twitter.com/LiverpoolTweeta/status/1108710878935957511

Tsar, that's going to be really difficult.

Some clues from the photo are it's on a slope, going down to the left hand so probably south facing, and that brickwork looks interesting and probably recognisable to someone though if it was demolished long ago they probably aren't around any more.

It also doesn't look like the typical Georgian pub front, those protruding bricks rather than smooth, so possibly mid to late Victorian built when Liverpool was expanding.

See this place from Scottie press, The Europa, it has vaguely similar though not identical brickwork...

So I'd guess perhaps the same builder and maybe even down Scotland road direction, but that's more as a hunch than anything else.

When the photo is blown up, the frosted/etched glass unfortunately contains not a clue unless someone can deduce from the style a particular brewery but I'm not sure if Breweries ever went that far (though the Notty Ash did if I remember rightly, I think we had a post on it several years ago)

Richie is our best bet.....calling Richie...

The Midland on Ranelagh street immediately sprung to mind when I first saw it, but the brick work is wrong.

Could also be in Everton, Netherfield Road or Heyworth Street maybe?

Great looking EMU's those.

I think they are the L&Y built ones, the US inspired clerestory variants but with end corridor connections on the driving cars and trailers, unlike the ones usually seen on the LMS Southport line at that time seemed to have had non clerestory roofs from the photos I've seen though maybe they were just rebuilds/modernisation at the time. As ever, the history all seems somewhat complex and not documented too well.

I believe all got scrapped in the early 40's when replaced with the LMS 502's that soldiered on into the 70's.

Just to be clear; I meant the plaque that's disappearing behind his neck.
Also, is that a face peering over his left shoulder through the glass?
Of little or no consequence I know; just thought I'd point them out  :)

Had a mess around with the imagine in PS to try and see if it cleared anything up but think the think over his right shoulder is the door lock. Certainly doesn't appear to say anything anyway.

Blimey Gulley, where’d you get this know-how from?! Mind you, I think I might be an expert on the sloping streets of Lpool now.

Don't think Cases St has ever been on a slope, unless when you're pissed coming out of Coopers.
