link not working now ???

this is the website for all scores anyhow

The people of Liverpool are workers. This is not a rich town where everyone lives a comfortable life. They work hard for themselves, and this is what we at Liverpool like to do. This is the attitude we must all have.

Restaurant Name: Gulshan

Location: Aigburth Road

Link to their website: http://www.gulshan-liverpool.com/

How many went:

3 ordered takeaway

What was [roughly] ordered:

Chicken Green Balti Massala (House special apparently), Lamb Dopiaza, Lamb Tika Karhai, Pilau Rice, Peshwari Nan, Garlic Nan

Review of the Food:

Decent sized portions, one rice managed 3 people (just) there was some nan left over and the currys had plenty of meat (decent sized chunks too) and had to be spooned out twice.  Everyone tasted everything and although we all agreed the green balti was the nicest (which was mine  ;)) the other two were also top notch.  The dopiaza was good with a clear distinction between the two different types of onions and had an almost roasted flavour.  The Karahi seemed a touch hotter than the others (all were supposedly medium, and had a nice heat that stayed at the back of the mouth) but that could have been because the lamb was tika marinaded, but was still great and as with the others, you could taste some individual flavours instead of just anonymous spicyness.

The pilau rice was possibly the best I've ever had.  It was packed with flavours (bay leaves and cassia bark left in the carton) and had a slight sweetness to it that complimented the sauces brilliantly.  Unfortunately, the nan bread had gone slightly soggy (as is always the case with take aways) but they were nice, with the garlic one in particular being flavoursome.

Review of the venue:

Although we only popped in to collect, the place looked nice, with well laid tables and a simple, smart decor.  Admittedly it was early and nowere near full, but I can't imagine it being an unplesant place to sit.  Apparently the toilets are something of an attraction, although I can't comment.

As for the service, we were told 20 minutes on the phone, so set off straight away (from Childwall).  When we arrived, we waited about 5 or so minutes and heared from the kitchen the encouraging sound of food being transfered from pans to containers.  This was a good sign as it proves that the meals hadn't been going cold on the side for god knows how long.  When the waiter emerged (we paid while we waited) we were handed a carefully stacked bag of clearly labeled and (more importantly) correct dishes.  The food benefited from being fresh as it didn't cool down too much during the drive home and the hot plates we had on standby were hardly needed.  Also worth noting was the 3 free poppadoms we recieved.  They were decent and came with a pots of mango chutney and chopped cucumber, although I usually expect these with some of the lower quality places (to sweeten the deal) I don't expect this with food of this quality, which was nice.

Would you go again?:

Planning to dine in fairly soon.

Would you recommend it to friends and family?

Without a shadow of a doubt.

Any known offers of fixed menus?:

Set meals for between 2-4 people.

Price Paid:

£24 for 3 currys, 1 portion of rice and 2 nan.

Overall score out of 10: 9/10 one point knocked off for the peshwari nan (somethign I usually look forward to) being a bit "meh".

Lovely curry in the Gulshan, never had a bad meal.

My parents however swear by the one a couple of doors down. I can't remember the name but it is bloody good too.

God i miss curry.

The kitchen is positively gleaming and sterile compared to the stockroom where they keep all the food.

I know this place has a popular, bohemian vibe etc etc. but I honestly wouldnt eat there if they paid me to.
Seriously, don't go.

Restaurants La Bistro Pepperpot in Woolton, La Scala and Plaice To Meet, Allerton, and Keiths, in Lark Lane, were all judged to be “bad” or “poor” in the “compliance with hygiene” category.

Panoramic is excellent.  Will defo go again and again.  Would recommend going on the lunch menu though, you can see more, it costs about the same price for a 3 course meal and the main at night.

Oh yeah, and that Guardian review, bin it, he doesn't like any restaurant outside of London.

I'd agree with that, particularly at this time of year.  We went for Sunday Lunch recently and it was superb.  The food was excellent and the view of a sun bathed Liverpool slowly giving way to a great sunset was superb.  And as Eve says the three course lunch is excellent value as compared to the dinner menu.

Review of the Food:

Good Portions, I had the veal and was very impressed - was cooked perfect. came on the bed of tomatoe based source over pasta. Cheesecake after was beautiful.

Could anyone recommend a nice restaurant in the city centre to take the wifey for a delayed Valentines (long distance relationship)?

Meet her in Liverpool on Friday and need to get something reserved so she doesn't cut my dick off. Not too expensive would be ideal - up to 50 quid (excluding wine) would be the highest this cheap bastard is willing to go.

I'd recommend the Side Door on Hope Street mate.

Cheers VDM,

Just went on their website and it seems very reasonable. Wifey agrees with it so will book today and go by the Philharmonic afterwards. She gets Friday as her day - I get Sat, Sun getting drunk with my mates and then the next week in Madrid and Boro - only fair  ;)

How many went
5 People.

What was [roughly] ordered
Pumpkin Feta Tart, Chorizo and Black Pudding Salad, Soup   (Starters)
Chicken Pasta, Chicken In Calvados Sauce, Pork And Apple Crush, Salmon  (Mains)
Fruit Crumble, Creme Brulee (Puddings) Coke, Coffees and Wine

Review of the Food
It does have that real French bistro feel to the place. The food is excellent and fresh, and because the food is so good, and it's so busy and full of friendly chatter coming from all over the restaurant, waiting a little longer than average for each course is perfect. It is a set menu kind of place with a choice of about 6 or so starters, mains and puddings, which changes virtually every day. We took the kids yesterday, but a few weeks ago, the missus and I popped in after shopping, and nearly every starter and main was different from the first time. The creme brulee was second to none that I have eaten in France! I've spoken to a friend who says it's excellent in the early evening too, and he's been there a few times before going to the Playhouse.

Review of the venue
A very authentic French bistro. Lots of decor that you would expect from a French restaurant with old french pics, menus and adverts everywhere. It's a charming little bistro with a wonderful friendly atmosphere. Great for everyone to sit around eating good food and chatting with friends, and equally families all seemed to enjoy themselves, whilst also being intimate enough for couples. And I even learnt a few words of French from the tapes playing when I went for a piss!

Would you go again?
Absolutely.

Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Already have done

Any known offers of fixed menus?
Fixed menu choices for £7.95 for 3 courses until 4.30pm and £10.95 from 4.30pm until 7pm

Price Paid
£67 for the five of us for an outstanding Sunday lunch, and worth every penny. Christ, I paid £80+ for me and the missus in the Gallery in Formby the other week and the food was dreadful!.

Overall score out of 10
A definite 10. I've been there with missus on our own, and again with the boys, and the food was equally as excellent both times, and the atmosphere was just right both times.

Jalons Bridewell is decent enough and is really nicely decorated too, so it doesn't look like it's a cheap place if you know what I mean. It's in Campbell Street, just off Slater Street, so it's handy for some decent bars too.  If you book your table for before 7pm, you can get the two course special for £14 each, leaving you with about £20 quid extra for ale! And it's just around the corner from Slaters, so you can get her pissed on the cheap too! Do you like the way I'm thinking, you fucking mingebag?   :P   ;D   :hally

  • Restaurant Name: Cafe Sports Express
  • Location: Liverpool One
  • Link to their website: http://www.cafesportsengland.com/cafe_sports_express.php
  • How many went: 2
  • What was [roughly] ordered: Margherita pizza, Tuna mozzarella burger, drinks
  • Review of the Food: The pizza was adequate, but nothing you couldn't replicate yourself with a trip to Tescos and an oven. The Tuna mozzarella burger was quite disturbing - it had a definite 'mass produced' sort of vibe, rather than tasting like a fresh/natural piece of fish, and the mozzarella seemed to have been injected inside it, in disconcerting lumps.* Unfortunately it was also undercooked and merely lukewarm; so, despite being very hungry, I couldn't bring myself to finish it off. The accompanying chips were OK though.
  • Review of the venue: Was in the area so decided I'd give it a try, given the positive comments on here about its big brother on Stanley Street. So - good location, being alongside/underneath the landscaped park, and there's an outdoor seating bit which might be nice in the summer. Staff were friendly and attentive enough, but unfortunately for me it falls uncomfortably between (eg) McDonalds and Café Rouge - the quality was closer to the former, while the price was closer to the latter, and as such I wouldn't choose it over either of them. Similarly, with there being loads of TVs on tuned to Sky Sports News - I found that quite annoying by the end - and if there was something on I'd actually want to watch, I'd go to a pub that did food instead.
  • Would you go again?: No. Well, I might give it one more chance, after I'd tried every other eating establishment in the city centre.
  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?: I can see it might work for a family with young-ish kids, as a compromise of having all the TVs with Sky Sports on, and eating something that's (ostensibly) a bit healthier than your average fast food place. But only if we caught the food on a bad day, which is uncertain. Otherwise - and for anyone else, really - I wouldn't recommend it, there's too may other decent options in town.
  • Any known offers of fixed menus?: Yes, there was 10% off everything, but they were calling it the 'transfer window' offer, so I assume it's probably finished now.
  • Price Paid: About £18
  • Overall score out of 10: 3

*Erm - at least, I hope that was the mozzarella...

I was just going to mention Jalons Bridewell when i read the other comments.

We went on Sunday night, was going to the Monro but it was booked up around 6pm. Been the Monro once and it was terrible but was going to give it another try.

Stumped for somewhere to go ended up in Jalons, it was 7pm so restaurant was empty till about 730. Restaurant upstairs is dead smart, I was surprised how smart it was. Downstairs its old prison cells used upstairs is a lot more upmarket than i expected.

It was a set menu and cos it was a sunday it was only £14. Had starters of duck which was good and pretty big for a starter especially compared to some places in town,  followed by a traditional roast beef dinner which the beef was really really good.

Food servings pretty big, so much so I didnt have a deserts. Only bad thing was the dingbat girlfriend left her bag there only to remember when we got home so had to drive back to get it.

Restaurant Name: Bar Italia
Location: Castle Street
Link to their website: http://www.baritalialiverpool.com/
How many went: 2
What was ordered: Peroni, Cannelloni alla Romana, Tagliatelle al Peperoncino and two sweets
Review of the Food: The cannelloni was great, very hot (as in just out of the oven) and tasted great with herbs and spinach in the meat. The tagiatelle also was lovely -but probably something that you could easily russle up at home. Sweets were good, Tiramsu that was the right sweetness (sometimes it can be too sweet even for my tooth) and a sort of nougat ice cream thing that went down a treat. The same cant be said of my mums limoncello!!

Review of the venue: Was lunch time and out with my mum so we popped in. Its a little dimly lit, and they could do with some new china, but it has a traditional italian restaurant feel about it. Similar to some of the places I ate in Rome, Boston and New York. Apparently the owner is well known to regulars and can often be found at tables making reccomendations on the menu.

Would you go again?: Yes but probably in a bigger group
Would you recommend it to friends and family?: Yes (so long as they get new china)

Any known offers of fixed menus?: Sorry dont know

Price Paid: About £33 with two peroni's

The Quarter Cafe

Location: Faulkner Street, off Hope Street, Town

How many went: 2

What was [roughly] ordered: American Hot Pizza, Chicken pasta with bacon and mustard. Tiffin cake and Hot Chocolate Fudge cake, Cains Raisin Beer and 2 Cokes and a coffee

Yep I was pretty impressed by the quarter. a mate of mine always nips in there and said it has a real good laid back atmosphere and good inexpensive food and he was spot on.

I don't think I was. Would be an odd place to go for a meal before coming to me.

Very well as far as I'm aware. If I'm doing badly they're not telling me. Not managed to have a look round here yet really. It's on my to do list.

YeeRah(i think thats right)

Location: liverpool one

How many went: 6

What was [roughly] ordered: a few starters, some spring rolls and some pork kebab skewer things. mains were half a chicken and chips, a combo platter thing with all different meats and little chinese bits on, a curry of some sort, bolognaise and pork skewers and rice as well as sides of chips and wedges.
and being girls we all had chocolate cake for desert!haha

Review of the Food: well i thought it was alright, about right for the price i suppose. I had pork skewers with sticky rice(which i thought would be sticky with some nice sauce or that, but no it was just glued together boiled rice ???) the chicken and chips was a very decent portion size and the platter looked really good too. Everyone seemed pleased with their meals and there were no complaints. Desert was very nice but has hot choclate cake and ice cream ever been anything but?? :D

Venue: Really lovely, venue made it for me, the staff were fantastic and there was a live singer on who was nice, and you can see things being cooked. Really impressed with the place.

Would you go again?: Yeah think so. Be lovely in the summer with the seats outside and that

Would you recommend it to friends and family? Yeah suppose so

Any known offers of fixed menus?: Not sure

Price Paid: between six of us it was £120, which was for 2 starters, 6mains, 5 deserts, 1 bottle of wine, a few beers and a few cokes. Pretty decent really

Overall score out of 10 give it a 6-7, loved the venue, had to wait an hour for table though and the food was nice but not outstanding. Get what you pay for i suppose.

La Cubanita

Location: Campbell Square (Behind Duke St, opp Jalons Bridewell)

How many went: 3

What was ordered:

Starters - Chicken Croquette, Meatballs and Ribs

Mains - "Peanut Seller's Song" (Chicken in creamy peanut sauce), Slow Roasted Pork and Steak Especial (Fillet steak stuffed with sauteed peppers and choritzo and topped with cheese, could have been roquefort).

Drinks - 2 pints of San Miguel, 1 glass of house red wine and 1 bottle of sparkling water.

Review of the Food: Very good, starters were all nice with the meatballs being the highlight.  The ribs were tasty and fell off the bone and the croquette was nicely flavoured and not at all greasy.  If the starters were good, the mains were something else.  Each one came with a choice of spicy potatoes or rice and beans, so we made sure we had both options covered.  The potatoes were good, but the rice and beans took me right back to the streets of Havana.  The pork was well presented (as were all the dishes) and had a fantastic flavour whilst not being at all dry.  The "Peanut Sellers Song" was essentialy chicken in a creamy peanut/coconut sauce, almost a wierd cross between a satay and a korma, but was incredibly good and didn't leave that sickly feeling you sometimes get with cream based sauces.  The star of the mains though, was the steak (my choice).  The first mouthful was cooked to perfection, beautifully pink meat which melted in the mouth contrasted by sweet sauteed peppers, slightly smoky choritzo and an almost bitter tang of what tasted like roquefort (although the menu simply listed it as "cheese").  Only negative about the meal was that the steak was much thicker at one end causing the thinner part to be cooked past medium.  Also the portions were fairly conservative although 2 courses managed to satisfy everyone's hunger just about.  Drinks were pricey but decent (£3 odd a pint, £3.75 for house wine) with the wine being quite nice.

Would you go again?: Absolutely

Venue:

Used to be the Kent Gardens (a failed attempt at a "real ale bar") and the building is certainly more suited to it's current role.  The decor was decent, with nice tables/chairs and a clean overall look.  They had given into cliche a bit with a Cuban Flag, Havana Club bar sign and pictures of Che and Fidel gracing the walls and the TV was playing Cuban music although some traditional Salsa/Son would have helped the ambiance more than the more pop based fare they offered.  Finally, there was a stage set up for live music but we ate early and were only able to see the guitarist unpack and get a drink.

Would you recommend it to friends and family? Yes

Any known offers of fixed menus?: Yup, it's all 2 course fixed menu (although the selection is fantastic).  £15 weekdays and early doors weekends and £21 if you order after 6.30 Fri/Sat.  Some of the meals are a bit extra (the steak was a £4 suplement).  On the subject of menus, the drinks menu was quite poorly designed with terrible wine listings.  Giving the grape is good but if you're asking £16-20 a bottle please let me know which vineyard and possibly give some tasting notes.

Price Paid:  £60 roughly between 3

Overall score out of 10: 9, a rereshing change of cuisine and one which brought back good memories.  Only real disappointments were over the bar (poor wine list, no cuban beer, expensive cocktails).  Breath of fresh air in town however and I hope it does well.

Went back to the The Monro over easter weekend. They had a different Easter Sunday offer on which was £17.95 for 3 courses.

To be fair the food was absolutley cracking comapred to my last visit. There were 12 of us and the service was also much better. I can't remember what everyone had but I had muffin with crab and poached egg, roast lamb roast dinner followed by a cheese board. Think the bill for 12 was £330 but did include about 4/5 bottles of wine and about 12-15 pints as well as 4-6 soft drinks.

Went to the monro for me sunday lunch this week. 2 courses for £12.50. I had the beef, which was the nicest beef ive had in years, a nice big Yorkshire, plenty of spuds and really nice gravy. Never lets me down does the Monro.
