Ha!  I always panic when you post in this thread mate.  First thought is "shit! which place in which I have just eaten has got a 3 inch layer of rat faeces on the kitchen surfaces".

Went to the Gourmet Burger place the other week.  It was good, the burgers were great, but then at £8 for a burger and another £3 for a bowl of chips they bloody well should be.

Nah, I'd never comment on a public forum about the house you share with the other mods, VDM.... :wave

Thanks for the heads up about gourmet burger-11 bloody nicker for a posh mackies  :o think i'll give that a swerve.........

Be interested in a review if you do go mate.

It's supposed to be good but the one time we went (Sat lunch a long while ago) it was beyond dire. Truly fucking awful.  I'm guessing this was some bizarre one off but I've not been back since to test the theory.

Cheers mate.  My guess is that the chef had called in sick or something on the day we went and so we were just unlucky. Still a black mark against the place as they should have said they were not doing food rather than attempt to struggle through.  It really was beyond awful and their were loads of other tables complaining too.

As you say though the reviews are predominantly glowing. Will look forward to yours.

Been loads of times mate, but not since they've extended the dining room.

Have to say that every time I've been its been absolutely splendid. Specials board is generally great, and the puddings are frigging fantastic.

Hope they haven't overstretched themselves by almost doubling the number of covers-it would be a shame if the service went downhill, because it is one of the best restaurants food wise for many a mile.

No we went ages ago before the extension too.  So, as I say it must just have been a really bad day.  It's just that restaurants generally tend to get one chance to impress. Hence we've never been back.  Might have to change that sometime soon.

Yeah it's expensive, I wouldn't make a habit of going there to be honest. Thought the chips were pretty crap as well for 3 quid, you get better chips in most chippys for a nicker.

Only just saw this thread so will post a review about a visit to El macho a few months ago.

Restaurant Name: El Macho

Location: Hope Street

Link to their website: http://www.elmachorestaurants.co.uk/

How many went: 8 for a birthday party

What was [roughly] ordered: CHILLI BOWL (starter) CARNE ASADA (steak main) for me. Too many others to list

Review of the Food: My food was very good (8/10), others were somewhat less keen than me, they were eating different dishes to what was ordered (more of that below),  but all in all not bad .

Review of the venue: Well what can i say; the service was the worst i have ever experienced in any establishment ever. It was Fawlty Towers transported to a mexican restaurant in liverpool. On the one hand it was a disgrace but we ended up having so much fun laughing at all the f**k ups that were going on that it was a entertaining night. Even the managers arrogant refusal to knock things off the bill that didn't turn up ended up as funny. One of those you'll either have to laugh or cry.

Would you go again?: Probably won't be allowed by the other half as the service was beyond a disgrace. We waited an age (well over an hour) then the comedy started, a couple of starters turned up then 20 mins later a few more starters turned up with a main (for someone who's starter had not arrived). Dishes arrived that were not ordered, some that were ordered didn't turn up at all. We were that hungry in the end we just ended up saying to the waiters leave it all there and we'll share it. I think i was the only person out of 8 of us who got the correct order.
I had a pint spilled on me by a waitress, she just said sorry and then f**ed off without even getting me a cloth!!. During once particulary farcical moment i ordered a pint for me, a lemonade for someone else then asked for a shandy for my lass. The waitress then announced she doesn't think they have any shandy in!!!! There were simply to many screw ups to list fully.
At then end of the evening we ended up having a prolonged argument with the manager during which he was arguing the toss over every bit of the bill we were saying didn't turn up. :butt

Would you recommend it to friends and family? Well the foods good and it could have just been an off night for the service. A really really off night.

Any known offers of fixed menus?: No idea

Price Paid: You will be looking at £20-£25 each for starter, main and a few bevvies

Overall score out of 10: 6/10 (would have been higher if i was just marking the food)

I went to the Monro and thought it was pretty bad too. It was as like they just had too many people there to and not enought staff to cope with orders, food wasnt good, was cold and it was a pretty miserable experience. This was a while ago on we went on recommendations of people who have been before and since and still like it.

I suppose it will be ok on a Sunday as it might not be as busy as a Saturday night.

I'm off to Puschka saturday so i'll put a review up next week when I get a chance.

Deli Fonseca
Location: Stanley Street, City Centre
http://www.delifonseca.co.uk/

How many went: 2

What was [roughly] ordered:
Charcuterie platter to share, mutton and tomato bhuna with dhal and basmati rice, welsh black beef and beetroot stew with colcannon.

Review of the Food:
Superb.  The plate of meat was featured a gorgeously spicy chorizo along with a plethora of other tasty carnivorous treats.  The mutton bhuna was aromatic and melted in the mouth and the stew was similarly tasty.  The portions aren't huge but this is hearty bistro type fare executed to perfection rather than anything too fancy or pricey.

Review of the venue:
Very pleasant modern dining room with booths down one side and standard seating in the middle. The Deli is on the floor below and is open until 9.  The Service was excellent, precisely hitting that balance between friendly chat and professionalism.

Would you go again?:
Hell yeah. Probably soon.

Would you recommend it to friends and family? Yes.

Any known offers of fixed menus?: They do a once a month 4-course fixed menu with six different glasses of wine for £39.50 a head.

Price Paid: Starters are around the £5 mark (we paid £12 for the platter) and the mains are all around £10. Desserts are all home made and cost £4.95.  Total bill was £45 for two including large wine, two beers and two coffees.

Overall score out of 10: 10/10 It does what it does as well as it is possible to do it.  Which is all you can ask.

THE UK’s highest restaurant, the Panoramic, at Liverpool’s West Tower, is now recognised as among the best in the country.

The 34th-floor restaurant and cocktail bar has been voted into 26th place in a list compiled by the Top 100 UK Restaurants Academy, which is made up of chefs, restaurateurs and food critics.

It means Panoramic is now above some of the world’s most renowned restaurants and chefs.

For example, Gordon Ramsay’s Claridges only makes it to 33.

Panoramic’s chef director Chris Marshall said: “This is an incredible achievement for a restaurant open less than a year.”

In fairness the reviews it has had on this thread were glowing.

Also, for where the Panoramic is aiming to position itself then price and quantity are not really the yard sticks they'll be measured against.

Can anyone recommend a decent (reasonably priced) restaurant for me an the bird tomorrow night? Ideally somewhere with on-site parking, or somewhere to park nearby.

Are there any decent places down the albert dock? Or is it best to go into town?

Had a look at the menu for that Panoramic Tower - not much i fancied really, plus the missus is fussy  ::)

Any suggestions welcome
 :wave

Loads on this thread mate, Lark Lane or Hope Street would be a good place to start, decent parking too

Las Iguanas
Location: Top floor of Liverpool 1
Website: www.iguanas.co.uk

How many went: 2

What was [roughly] ordered:
Tapas platter to share.
Paella
Fajitas
Side order fries & aioli
Couple glasses of wine & a bottle of water

Review of the Food:
Really very good. The food was obviously freshly cooked (Tapas can be a real problem if the stuffs been standing round for ages, but this was excellent). The Paella was nice and spicy, with loads of fish and chicken, and Mrs Elvis loved her fajitas too. The side order of curly fries and aioli was gorgeous too.

Venue:
Nice modern room with a large bar to one side. Tables are a bit small, but overall the dining room is a very nice place to be. Also had a good atmosphere-quite busy really for a Monday night at seven o'clock.

Would you go again?:
No-see service comments below. Also, there's so many new places to try now, and first impressions count for a lot, so I'd try all the other places first before I risked this one again.

Would you recommend it to friends and family? No-see service comments below.

Any known offers of fixed menus?: Yep-there's a meal deal type thingy available before 6.30pm. We didnt get in til after 7, so didnt take much notice of the details. Sorry!

Price Paid: All in just about 50 quid for the food and drinks described above.

Overall score out of 10: 8/10 for the food. 3/10 for the service. Overall it was a 5 I suppose.

Shame really-I wanted to like the place. I'm absolutely made up with the number of new restaurants around Liverpool now, and I want them all to do well and keep improving the food scene round here for years to come. This one has real work to do though.

The service problems centred around the time taken to get the food out, and our crap waitress. It took over 40 mins for the starters to arrive, and another 20 mins or so after we'd finished those for the mains to turn up. I said earlier it was busy for a Monday, and it was. But it wasnt that busy, and there were loads of staff on. The manager did come over and apologise though.

When the mains did arrive, and Mrs E opened the covered dish with the fajitas in, there was one (very old) rock hard tortilla in there. The waitress obviously hadnt bothered her arse to check first. Cue another delay while they sorted that out.

We had to ask 3 times for a glass of wine, and when we asked for the bill we even had to wait for that! Then the girl forgot the card machine, and we had to wait again.

We were only looking for somewhere for a quick bite to eat as we had 2 hours to kill waiting to pick our daughter up. Normally we find ourselves lingering over 2-3 cups of coffee at the end to kill a bit of time, but we only just finished the meal last night! Dead disappointing.

Those prices for Wagamamas have gone up a bit since i used to go to the one in Manchester a few years back. I'd say main course have gone up 1 or 2 pounds, which isn't too bad i suppose.

I somehow managed to get my hands on about 50 'buy one main meal get one free' vouchers for in there, and me and my mate used to go all the time. We'd get a main course each, and drink the free green tea, and the meal would come to £7 between us. happy days. The Chicken Katsu Curry or whatever is amazing, as is the chilli beef ramen.

Is a good addition to the scene in Liverpool, but i'd rather eat in Tokyou where you get the same food for half the price.

Breaded chicken breast from the supermarket + white rice + curry sauce from the chippy = chicken katzu curry?

hahaha ive always thought that!! The curry sauce tastes the exact same as chippy curry, which isnt a bad thing like!! Ive only had katsu curry and this special main they were doing for a while, loads of seawood in some white wine sauce, was amazing!!! But they stopped it :( Can you recommend some other good ones to try?

I tried it once and it wasn't as nice, and as i said i was getting the dish for £3.50n so not really worth it. Reckon i'll try it again now though...

The ramen is really good - a huge bowl of beautiful asian broth filled with noodles and veggies and then with your choice of salmon/chicken breast/steak served on top. The chilli beef one i mentioned is spicy (obviously) and gorgeous. It's perfect food for a cold day.

As i said though it's about a tenner in there, and £4 in Tokyou, which may or may not have been reviewed on here before...

If Tokyou hasn't been done already, here goes  :lickin

Tokyou

Location: 7 Berry Street, town

How many went: normally go with a few mates. I think tables only fit 4 although i could be wrong.

What was [roughly] ordered: selection of starters, chicken and tofu ramen for some, and stir fried noodle dish for others.

Review of the Food:
Really good. Starters are you standard chinese stuff - crispy seaweed, spring rolls, duck and pancakes etc. They also do a crispy beef which is superb.

I normally go for the chicken or tofu ramen which is a huge bowl of chinese broth filled with noodles, fresh chinese veg, and pieces of meat or tofu. They also have a beef one, a prawn one and a charsui one.

The stir fried noodles and rice dishes are also really big and tasty, and they do a large selection of regular chinese style dishes (like sweet and sour chicken), which are about the same quality as a really good chinese takeaway.

Venue:
Nothing special. Quite small so can get really busy. Always superb quick service though, even when packed.

Would you go again?: Yep. 100%. Go whenever i'm in Liverpool.

Would you recommend it to friends and family? Yes. Not the sort of place you'd go for a fancy meal, but for a quick bite its easily the best place in Liverpool IMO.

Any known offers of fixed menus?: Nope but dirt cheap. Unlimited jasmine tea for 80p is nice too!

Price Paid:  per head about £7.50 for a starter, main course and tea.

Overall score out of 10: 10 - wouldn't be 10 on fanciness or looks, but thats not what i go in for. Portion size, price, service and taste are all 10+

    • Restaurant Name:
    Elude

    • Location
Porter Street,    Near Costco/Toy's R Us

    • Link to their website
www.eludeliverpool.com

  • How many went
2 People

  • What was [roughly] ordered
2 Starters, 2 Mains, 2 Deserts. 1 Bottle of 'complimentory' Champagne (through work), 2 glasses of Red & one glass of white.

  • Review of the Food
Amazing. The menu (pdf on their website) was an excellent balance of predominantely English/Modern European dishes. The 2 starters ordered were Queen Scallops, and Mushroom Bruschetta. For mains a beautiful Steak & a Chicken Breast. For desert I had a Creme Brulee & I can't actually remember what the missus had as I was too involved in my own desert :D  (champagne may have had to do something with that!)

  • Review of the venue
They call this place a hidden gem due to its location, and they are right. You will think you are jst going down a pitch black back street, and then this well lit resteraunt appears on the corner. It used to be one of the old potato warehouses when this area was in its prime, but it has been restored beautifully.  With no natural light, candles can be seen throught. Set over 2 floors, bar downstairs & resteraunt upstairs, its mix of white/light walls, dark floors, rich red fabrics and the candle light make it very romantic & very cozy.

  • Would you go again?
Definately.

  • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Have done

  • Price Paid
As the champagne was free, the rest of the bill came to £85, with a 12% tip.

  • Any known offers of fixed menus?
Not that Im aware of. Doesnt seem the place that would do either.

  • Overall score out of 10
10, can't fault it.

Really is a hidden gem & couln't recommend it enough!

Thanks for the heads up mate-will gove that a try.

First time I heard of that place was when I saw a stack of their business cards at the garage on Great Howard Street. Went round to see where it was (I work round that neck of the woods and Porter St is not the entertainment centre of the city, believe me).

Lo and Behold, there it was! The single most bizarre location for a restaurant for many a mile I'd say- can't get too much passing trade there.

By the way, an update on my Las Iguanas review-girl from work went last night and almost missed the start of the Bunnymen concert because of the shite service.Still, I did warn her.........[/list]

You can book online which we did and it was very efficient.

    • How many went
5 (should have been 6 but one was ill. We had to share a table with a party of three others which was ok but we did wonder if they were "due" to sit with us as it would have been very squashed if all 6 of us had gone.) All the tables were full before we left though so lucky for them we were one down!

    • What was [roughly] ordered
Starters each (e.g. Spicy Tuna Fishcakes, Duck Rolled in pancakes) plus two bits of sushi (Maguro - Tuna) as we'd never had it before, followed by a main course each (e.g. Yakitori Chicken, Duck with raspberry, Sirloin teriyaki, Spicy Lamb Loin)

    • Review of the Food
Had high expectations due to reading and hearing a lot of good reviews but quite frankly we were all a bit disappointed.

Starters were nice and I'm glad I tried the sushi, although it was quite bland to be honest - though better with the sliced ginger. They provided three dips between three - sweet chilli which was nice, garlic mayo (not very Japanese!) and soy sauce (yuck!) which you had as much or as little of as you wanted.

My main was the Yakitori chicken, which you got with saute potatoes, stir fry veg and egg fried rice (same for everyone). Portion sizes of these seemed a bit hit and miss depending on how easily he could reach your plate from the hot plate. (Tip:If you're hungry don't have a corner seat or you get overlooked!)

My mates said the lamb was gorgeous, the sirloin ok but both of us who had the chicken thought it only average. I just think I don't like soy sauce and I could taste in on everything! ::) (Maybe not such a great restaurant choice on reflection! :-[ )

Desserts - forget it! Crap choice - just a few ice creams really. We went for a liquid dessert elsewhere!  :D

    • Review of the venue
First time I'd been and it was quite entertaining. The flames were impressive - you could feel the heat three tables away! Though apart fom entertaining us, they were unnecessary. The hot plate was just like any other to be honest. (My mate is about 7 months pregnant and said that each time the flames went up the baby must have got a bit hot as it moved!)

We seemed to have got the trainee chef though. He kept droping things, and some of the others were a lot better. They all have dfferent colour hats and aprons. I don't know if they keep the same colours but for info ours was blue (see, always shite! ;) ). The dark green and red (of course!) ones both looked more impressive.

The service was attentive - a little bit too much for me if I am honest (but that could be just me!) I prefer to pour wine as I want it; others did too. They just topped all the glasses up each time as they walked past - so if you want more than your share of a bottle of wine, drink faster so your galss is nearly empty!  ;D Not rocket science I know but it made it a bit unfair.

    • Would you go again?
Possibly if I was with someone who really wanted to go there. Moreso if they were paying!

    • Would you recommend it to friends and family?
Not sure I would. We had to give feedback on their little PDAs and rate it average. There was nothing bad about it - food perfectly edible just not my favourite (first time I'd had Japanese and glad I tried it). It just wasn't special, given the price! And for that, I want special!

    • Any known offers of fixed menus?
Doubt it. I looked before we went but couldn't find any.

    • Price Paid
Far more than I had banked on! Worked out at £40 each*!  :o  Now maybe I am just a cheapskate but I don't usually pay that much, or not unless it's really special and none of us thought this was. A bit different, yes, but didn't seem good value. First time I have left a £25 tip in my life!  >:( But they add a service charge on to your bill and that is what it was. :-\ The flames weren't that bloody entertaining and were over in seconds.

(*That was for 5 starters, 1 sushi, 5 mains, 2 bottles of wine, 2 beers and a coke for my pregnant mate).

    • Overall score out of 10
    6/10

The highlight was Robbie Fowler being there when we arrived. He was with his wife and kids but was happy to sign a book for me (it was my birthday and a mate had got me a Liverpool book so it was great timing!), although they left a few minutes later. No other celebs around.

Food in there is only noteworthy for its averageness, You pay for the 'theatre' which as you mentioned disn't even that good. I've been once and i wouldn't go back.

If you don't like soy then maybe Japanese isn't the best for you, although i would try it again at a better place, as there are lots of different dishes.

Wagamama.

Went back last night after doing some Chrimbo shopping.

Ordered some chicken satay type thingys on a skewer as a starter. The were served to us virtually raw (seriously, inside it was still bleeding). Waiter was v apologetic, and the manager even came over to say he was very sorry too.

Replacements came about 10 mins later (no prob with that as all the stuff there is cooked to order). Or not cooked to order as the case was here-unbelievably the second lot were well underdone too. Not as bad as the first lot, but still choc full of salmonella goodness.

At this point we got up and left.

Extremely disappointing-loved it the first time we went, but that was inexcusable (and very dangerous!) Won't be going back there in a hurry.

This Liverpool 1 place is rapidly turning into a culinary nightmare.........

Suprised the Sapporo only gets a six in here, thought it was excellent meself. The tomato sauce joke is getting boring though. Duck in barbecue sauce, splendid.

Monroe - now off my list for good.

Booked a table on-line 3 months ago (and had an e-mail confirmation of same).

Rang on the day of the meal to make sure everything was ok, only  to be told that there was no record of my booking. Was also accused of lying as they "don't do bookings at half past the hour, only on the hour"

Was passed over to a manager who quizzed me about the site I booked thorugh (ie was it a third party like Sugarvine/Toptable etc). Told her no, it was definitely your site as: a) I'm not a moron, and can generally remeber basic stuff like this, and b) the URL on the printed confirmation matches that on your on-line booking form.

"Oh er um well I dont know how thats happened, I'll have to have a word with our erm you know web people about this cos there's absolutely no record of your booking" (Think she was trained in customer service by the fucking Anfield Ticket Office.

Was finally begrudgingly told that they could "probably fit you in if you turn up at half seven ish, but you'll only be able to have the Christmas menu."

Told them, very politely, that "probably" wasnt really good enough, and that on their site it clearly states al a carte menu is available. In the end, I declined their offer of a 50% chance of a table, pointed out how fucking thick and useless they all were, and she agreed that I was right.

Never going back there again.

The people of Liverpool are workers. This is not a rich town where everyone lives a comfortable life. They work hard for themselves, and this is what we at Liverpool like to do. This is the attitude we must all have.
