Its just got the go ahead for a major facelift. So I think it will change in the next 12 months, in time for the capital of culture.

Nothing wrong with the station building itself in my view, the entrance is obscured by some ill conceived buildings which are due to be pulled down as has been said.

In terms of routes Brimingham, Manchester and Leeds are bound to serve more destinations simply down to geogrpahy.

I will say that the last 10 or 15 years have seen more routes lost though, there used to be a regular direct service to Scotland, also to the South Coast (Bournemouth, Brighton and Dover from memory).

Cut the complaining lad or fuck of. Picadilly was a shithole as well, but got done up for the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

Hence, Liverpool is having the station done up for next year etc etc

The Piccadilly work took about 3 years though, didn't it? So if theyare going to do an 11 month job on Lime St, it's still going to be pretty tatty in comparison.

I'm assuming that they want to get the shops cleared off Lime St and Concourse tower knocked down first. Can't see them building the new tower until after. Nowhere near as much room between station front and the platforms as Picadilly has unfortunately.

Manchester Piccadilly's mad. It's like an airport, but it is class though.

Lime Street isn't too bad on the inside, the outside could do with some work though and obviously that's getting done anyway. I find that its rough look fits in well with the class of strange that's on offer around there looking for business.

I think that Lime Street had a full refurb on the interior structure quite recently, all that remains to be done is the frontage, so far less work.

Other than that, Lime Street is more of a compact terminus with far less of a non-platform footprint than Picadilly so it will never have the same sort of concourse/shopping area.

In the longer term I think they may find they've missed a trick by allowing the hotel to be converted into Uni Halls.

Euston has an amazing amount of non platform space. Been rumours for years that they were going to extend the length of the platforms for longer trains as they could if needed build the concourse outside towards the bus station at the front. Mind the shopping facilities there are crap but it is due for a complete refurb i think, so no doubt they'll build loads of more shops there. Maybe they'll do the platform extensions at the same time?

Doubt it, it's far too late for anything major to happen in time for 2008 now. The retailers etc funded Piccadilly's refurb.

Once again this is a Merseytravel fuck up, they should have been on the ball with this a couple of years ago working with network rail and retailers, now it's too late and the place will remain a dump for the foreseeable future.

to be honest Ben it's nothing to do with Merseytravel, the station is fully owned by Network Rail

http://www.networkrail.co.uk/aspx/891.aspx

What it does need though are ticket machines. It can be overly busy at the ticket office without anything major going on like an away at Wigan etc...

Amen to that - even if it's just for some of the more local destinations. Their only solution to that problem is sporadically having a couple of ticket inspectors off the trains stood by the end of the ticket windows with their little machines. Bit daft, really.

The station was ment to be re-furbished a couple of years ago.
The shops out the front on lime street, (under concourse house?) wer given a compulsary purchase order in order for the re development to go ahead, this was stoped in its tracks by one of the shop owners apealing and wishing to take this to the high court. Thats why nothing has gone ahead.  Do them shops even make any money  ???

The lack of sufficient fine dining options (such as an oyster bar) and a proper tailor and shoe shine person are serious negative points against it.
I've just been reading in The Boys from the Mersey how those dapper Road enders in the 80s used to visit what must have been a 24hour tailor adjacent to Lime Street,  early on a Saturday morning, to obtain new outfits prior to a trip to the capital

The reason for the number of departures/arrivals being different between here and Manchester would probably be answered by the fact that Liverpool is at the end of the line, and not as central as somewhere like Manchester or Birmingham, and thus not served by as many lines.

So what, you want them to build more lines connecting Liverpool to Aberdeen, Plymouth and Dover? Get a grip, lad. You can get to a lot of the major cities in England direct from Liverpool, and with one change just about anywhere.

You're not entirely correct here, Garreth, as there are direct lines in place between Liverpool and Scotland, for instance. You used to be able to get a train from Liverpool straight up the west coast without the need for changes in Preston or Wigan. Now, to get to Glasgow or Edinburgh, you need to change, and to get to any other Scottish city, you need to change at least twice. I'm guessing there are similar situations on other lines. It is the train companies who decided not to make use of them after deregulation, as they were not profitable routes (yet another consequence of Thatcherite privatisation policy, I'm afraid). I personally think it's piss poor.

In theory there are direct lines between Liverpool and every other city in the UK - you could get to any station without having to change trains, were the operators so inclined. The line has to be drawn somewhere at the number of routes that are used, though (and indeed there are capacity issues on the network as well).

So you disagree with yourself then, and concede that no additional lines would need to be laid? I agree - a line does have to be drawn at the number of routes out of Liverpool. However, I strongly feel that said line has been drawn a long way from where it should be drawn.

You think the market is there for direct trains between Liverpool and say....Aberdeen?
