This case is a useful reminder that it's as important to be skeptical about the things we want to believe as those that we don't.

There were many posts on here about the case of 'Nick' and his claims about Harvey Proctor and Ted Heath amongst others.

It was fairly obvious when you looked at his testimony that the accusations were the fantasies of a disturbed mind. Yet they were picked up and repeated because they fit in with people's preconceptions. And they weren't challenged by people on the left because they were largely made towards Tories and Establishment figures.

A convicted paedophile has been found guilty of making false allegations of murder and child sexual abuse against a string of public figures.

Carl Beech, 51, from Gloucester, was found guilty of 12 counts of perverting the course of justice and one of fraud.

His lies led to a £2m Metropolitan Police investigation which ended in no arrests or charges being made.

Jurors at Newcastle Crown Court took a day to reach their verdicts following a 12-week trial.

Former NSPCC volunteer Beech, who denied the charges, did not react as the verdicts were delivered. He will be sentenced on Friday.

Known in media reports as "Nick", Beech accused senior politicians as well as army and security chiefs of sadistic sexual abuse and said he had witnessed boys being murdered in the 1970s and 1980s.

The two-year long Met investigation which resulted from his allegations - Operation Midland - closed in March 2016.

Back in 2015 I posted this in response to the constant trickle of posts that accepted the story uncritically and added other names and rumours with no more evidence than the Ted Heath accusations from 'Nick'.

It's almost certainly not true. The two tenuous bits of evidence were from a man who claimed he was abused in a flat full of yachting memorabilia in 1961 (before Heath took up sailing in his late forties) and a reference to Myra Ling Ling Forde by a police officer which she's denied having any knowledge of.

What really disturbs me is the hysterical witch hunt mentality, the unquestioning acceptance of rumour and highly suspect conspiracy theories because it reinforces some people's prejudices. People are actually quoting David Icke as a reference?

I don't need fabricated fantasies about Tory politicians to despise what Thatcher and others did to this country and its people. There's also an unpleasant association of homosexuality and paedophilia on the witch hunting. ted Heath was almost certainly gay (he was a confirmed bachelor) and the more dirty minded seem automatically associate being gay with liking 'boys'. In fact all the indications are that he was gay but asexual.

One other side effect of the obsession with famous paedophiles is that it ignores the far greater problem of paedophilia and child abisue by average run-of-the-mill men (it's mostly men). If you give a shit about the victims then why the fuck does it matter who is raping a five year old? Which is more disturbing and frightening? To be abused by a stranger or be abused for years by your father or uncle? If you read this thread and the other one you'd think that Paedophilia is not a widespread problem but is limited to Tories and 1970s entertainers.

A sadistic paedophile has been jailed for 16 years for what a veteran judge called “the worst case” he’d heard.

One of Robert Sullivan’s two victims was four when he first assaulted her – and lashed her with a dog lead when she struggled.

Chester crown court heard Sullivan, now 68, tied one girl to a radiator in a disused factory before raping her and beating her over the head with a piece of wood.

He raped one victim on Christmas Eve, smashing down a toilet door at a house in Winsford, Cheshire.

The court heard the defendant used the girls as “playthings” to fulfil his own sexual gratification in a “cycle of violent and sadistic behaviour.”

The abuse went on between 1977 and 1984.

Sullivan was arrested in 2009 but went on the run for 22 months before being caught last July.

He admitted 25 sex charges, including nine rapes.

Depraved paedophiles John Denham and Matthew Stansfield have been found guilty at Bristol Crown Court of plotting horrendous sex crimes against children under the age of five.

Denham, formally known as Benjamin Harrop, 49, was found guilty of conspiracy to sexually assault a child under 13 and Stansfield, 34, was convicted of two charges of conspiracy to rape a child under 13.

They were part of a sickening paedophile ring that targeted a baby, a toddler and a pre-school child.

In one instance the gang started planning abusing a baby before it was even born in ways that was to "difficult to put into words," said the National Crime Agency (NCA).

In total seven men were convicted of more than 30 child sexual abuse offences, including the rape of a child under the age of 13, following an investigation led by the National Crime Agency (NCA).

So please don't tell me that the obsession with historic celebrity sexual abuse has anything to do with the actual victims of child abuse. It has everything to do with an obsession with fame or political confirmation bias.

This was the one where the police kicked off the public aspect of the investigation by describing the allegations as ‘credible and true’.  It was a monumentally stupid thing of them to say.  Presumably it was motivated by complaints that they had been failing victims previously?  If so it’s a useful reminder, as if one were needed, that the answer to getting it wrong is to do your actual job, not just do the opposite.

A special word here for Tom Watson whose behaviour over this was appalling. It’s not good enough to say he was just repeating the accusations made by this creep. He repeated obvious fantasy, encouraged by the now defunct Exaro website simply because the main targets were Tories.

Attack them for their politics which are bad enough. There’s no need to make things up or promote fantasists.

The same goes for anything written by Isabel Oakeshott.
