The fascination with Russia for some people on the left goes back a long way. George Bernard Shaw, a great writer and passionate socialist was also an apologist for Stalin. In the current Labour leadership there's sympathy for Putin's Russia (despite it being run by billionaire oligarchs) that harks back to an idealised romantic view of the Russian Revolution.

Some people see Russia as an answer to imperialism (the US). Give me the US imperialism over the other option any day of the week thanks.

How is it strange?

Do you mean that immediately after the unexpected attack on the Skripals when they didn't know what the nerve agent was and didn't know how it had been delivered, they didn't give out much information about the nerve agent that err... hadn't been identified?

And that after the second attack when there has been 4 months of analysis and investigation carried out on the agent itself, the possible delivery method and perhaps even identification of potential suspects etc... they have more information and a better handle on possible scenarios. The other reason for the press conferences is that this has gone from contact with a nerve agent to a murder inquiry.

It depends on what you mean by a press conference, the police have been giving out subtle appeals for any information on the couples movements. theres a deadly container out their somewhere and they've no idea what it is or it's whereabouts. the police are more concerned about finding this container than giving us updates on what's happening but they don't want people to panic.

I'm, slowly, working my way through Robert Conquest's "Great Terror".

Whilst the Russian state was easily able to hide the fact of all the lesser known apparatchiks being liquidated surely our left wing intelligentsia realised that some of the better known party members were disappearing. Trotsky may have been persona non grata by the time of his assassination, and the Great Terror was over, but his death was the icing on the cake.

But, in the interests of fairness, Putin isn't in the same league as Stalin.

I’m not sure what point you’re making. Are you suggesting people in extreme circumstances don’t search through skips, bins or pick stuff up? They do and always have done. Spend a bit of time around Finsbury Park and you’ll see it. That’s not judging them - they are for the most part people let down by society.

I’ve lost at least a dozen mates to drugs. I’m a recovering heroin addict, and no I don’t know anyone that would use stuff they found in bins, unless they’re morons. Addicts aren’t stupid, they’re just sick. Pretty much 100% of those I know are too paranoid (educated) to share these days.

The Met have now confirmed that on Wednesday they found a small bottle containing Novichok in Charlie Rowley's house. Porton Down is still testing to see if it's the same batch as the one used to try and murder the Skripals.

May confirming that British intelligence has identified the men as belonging to the GRU, and that the operation would have been given assent at the 'highest levels' of Russian government. I don’t follow. They’ve been following up on leads and the case is now at a stage where they have enough evidence to make charges.

I'm not following either. Is it one of these two?

Is the problem that their early investigations were too good now they've been confirmed by further investigation, leading to charges?

or is the problem that the UK government shouldn't have mentioned anything to do with the Russian government until now, despite the very obvious and clear link with the matching substance (novichok) which had already been independently established after the Salisbury attack to have originated from Russia?

If it's the second one, I think UK citizens would have been up in arms demanding the government broke their silence. Especially residents in and around Salisbury
