Someone posted a rumour about Hiddink - exactly the sort of fan, media friendly 'yes man' who you describe there, a thought so depressing I find myself half beleiving it will happen.

So many people want to see us use 'tried and tested methods'. Don't these people get that there's other teams using those methods already, who have more money than us, and better players to do them with?

Rafa is a true original, an innovator. In terms of skills needed to do the kind of impossible job he's been tasked with here, there is no-one else who comes remotely close to being as suited as the man we already have in charge. The only others like him are a young breed of interesting mangers, several of whom cite Rafa as one of their main influences.

It's like our prize is on a very high shelf - our rivals have massive ladders that reach that shelf. What are we going to do? Hiddink, though I've no doubt he could motivate us short term to top 4, say, is the equivalent of buying a shorter ladder because that's all we can afford.

Rafa is trying to build us a jet pack. Yes, it's difficult. Yes, it looks stupid when it goes wrong. Yes, it's complicated and harder to understand than a ladder. But what choice do we have? The other option is to basically just give up on the prize, and settle for the shelves below, all of which are well stocked with mediocrity.

We should be giving Rafa whatever tools he asks for. Instead, he's been trying to build that jet pack with components for a ladder. He's finally got the owners to accept the need for the jet pack, and now they won't give him the money for it - money they did give to incompetent cowboy ladder builder Parry.

Yet instead of taking a step back and seeing the bigger picture, backing our rocket man and taking aim at our owners, we're on the verge of forcing him out, replacing him with some over-rated ladder afficionado, and once again shooting ourselves in both feet with a fucking machine gun, the kind of insane decision making that has characterised our utter joke of a board for two decades now.

Two fucking decades, and in all that time, the only one who really scaled the heights, showed us how pretty the view is from up there again is Rafa Benitez - the only one who's brought home one of the big two our legend is built on. The only one who's put a mark in the history books that will live on alongside our true greats.

Are these people going to show an ounce of contrition, of 'mea culpa'...are they going to learn from this and apply the lessons if the fear's of Rafa's fans are proved correct? Are they fuck. They're going to take aim at the next poor bastard while telling all and sundry about how stupid we were to let Rafa go in the first place.

As for Rafa himself, he'll take some time out, recover from the emotional pain, take stock, pick the best of the slurry of offers he will inevitably get as the most highly rated manager in Europe (and he is, outside of Britain fans and media rate him as numero uno, the big kahuna - he will be inundated with offers from the very biggest, Inter, with the media love spud moron in charge, would sack him in an instant to get Rafa, because Moratti craves what Rafa is more likely than anyone else to get him - CL glory), he will set conditions, and finally get the backing he needs - not so much financial but just to be left to do what he needs to do his way without bullshit - and I would bet that he will build that club into something huge, something that will make him a living legend with the fans of that club, just like he is to Valencia's fans, and (thankfully still) to many of ours.

The media will respond to this with a bout of the collective amnesia they do so well, and use Rafa's success and his successors lack of it as yet another stick to beat us with, while probably mounting another hysterical campaigng to get our new man out. Why? Because it sells and because they can.

Fuck that. Rafa is the man, and I really hope we don't all realise just how much the man he is only after he's left.

Excellent post.

Guus Hiddink is whipped out by lazy journos everytime there is a vacancy. More teams would sack who they have to install Rafa (if he was free) than they would for Hiddink.

I always remember that press conference when Rafa answered pretty much all questions with 'coaching and training'... words used before as 'orders' by Hicks and Gillette... Laughed a lot and felt proud that he is such a cool motherfucker.

Hope we get through this shit storm, hope we start tomorrow and don0t look back.

Don't forget that within 5 months of taking over from him Ranieri was sacked.

When I hear our supporters quickly call for Rafa's sacking as if he suddenly he is not a worthy manager, I don't picture the poster wearing red, but rather some loser wearing black and white stripes with Newcastle Brown inspired confidence.

Not to mention lazy fans. There's only a tiny fraction of them actually rated him before his 'rescue' (what a fucking joke that description is) of Chelsea, and his miraculous FA cup win and oh so brave backs to the wall, no ambition whatsoever defeat at the hands of a Barcelona team who actually cost quite a lot less money to put together than plucky underdogs Chelsea.

Now, it seems, he's the favourite of just about every man and his dog. Please, if the worst does happen, at least lets gamble and show some ambition. Signing Hiddink would be giving up as far as I'm concerned, and would do nothing, nothing at all for the long term structure when it comes to youths etc - stuff which is absolutely crucial if we are to build a stadium and still compete while it's being built. We need to do our own variant of what Arsenal are trying, Hiddink is not the man to oversee that kind of long term project.
He is the cat who walks by himself, and all roads are alike to him.

Not me.

I woud trust Rafa and our players to get us ot of this before I would trust G&T to find a better replacement.

Not to mention lazy fans.

They are only doing what they are told.

Chelsea won under Hiddink because he made a bunch of misfits and underachievers into giants, no? That's the script.

Lazy journos ignore the role that money plays in this sport. They want access to the top teams so that they can get the 'scoop' from them. They will never knock how they got to the top because they want access to the top teams. So the script is that Hiddink was their 'saviour'.

Rafa doesn't play their game. He bypasses them and communicates directly to us. Journos will never understand him like we do.

Haven't been on RAWK as much as I'd like recently but will get some time this weekend to read through the message boards and this thread.

I've supported us since the 90's and can't ever remember us winning the league. This period that Benitez has been in charge has been easily the most succesful - it's obvious and has been repeated numerous times. I used to remember when we were beating Sion and Vladikavkaz in the UEFA Cup when I was a kid and how enjoyable it all was. I remember when we finished 7th once but I can't remember being as much vitriol directed at our manager as there is right now. He's given me one of the best feelings in winning the European Cup. I still can't believe that match actually happened. We've beaten the the best teams in Europe consistently and have become a feared team again - something I'd never experienced. So regardless of what happens, I'll always love the man.

We've had a poor season this year (not going into the reasons why as not the point of this thread) but it's not even close to wiping out/cancelling/removing what Rafa has given to me as a fan. He continues to act with dignity and class despite everything thrown at him (some from our own supporters) and that alone would make me respect him. This without what he's brought to the club.

Reading back through this post, it doesn't sound great but it's hard to articulate how I feel about the whole situation. Just that I love this club and it's clear to me so does Rafa (perhaps slightly differently) and that coupled with the most successful (on the pitch at least) period I can remember is more than enough for me.
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

Brilliant posts here, thanks for everyone who has posted here apart from couple of posters, they clearly know who they are.

I am just sick of people forming sentences which ends up something like  "the buck stops with the manager". I mean, even if players play horribly, is it the manager's fault? people come up with how Gerrard or Torres rescued Benitez from disaster or champions league exit but when the same players fail to perform, it is manager's fault.

To quote Katzenbach and Smith (nicked shamelessly) “A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals and approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable.”
Why Rafa has to take all the blame is beyond me. Players must take their fair share of blame. I am not saying these players are not good enough, if they weren't then the same players wouldn't have mounted such an impressive fight last time around. There are times where all players go through this stage and unfortunately for us, most of our players have picked the same time schedule to get either injured or seriously out of form.

Anyways, I'll keep going, I'll support Rafa no matter what others say. To me he is undoubtedly still a top top manager and a gent of a man and nothing will ever change that.

Just seen his press conference today.

The amount of dignity and humility this man shows is incredible.  He is being lambasted from every single corner, yet he is still standing tall, wanting to do the very best for this football club and all the fans.

Of course, actions speak louder than words, and 3 points tomorrow would be a good follow up, but Rafa, you have my eternal respect and trust, and I believe you will turn this around.

Spot on again, partly sad but rings true to me. Hence why he gave Tomkins the exclusive some of them have been sneering over. The pathetic thing is most of them don't even believe the shite they write, but they certainly do know their jobs - which isn't journalism, which is about communicating facts as you see them - but, well, propaganda is what most of it really is.

Got to say i was pretty down after the reading game , but watching him in his news conference for the match tomorrow i'm feeling more confident of getting a result than i was , not sure why really, maybe its just  that he basically put two fingers up to the press with a big fuck you , him getting his piece of paper out and saying fact, brilliant,  Good on you rafa , with all the shit you've been getting this week for you to do that you have got some balls .

For anyone who hasnt seen it yet.

Ta very much.

Edit: Just watched it there, and to be honest it tugged my heartstrings at the start. It takes balls to come out and admit we're playing shite (much more eloquently put by him though) but to start with that piece of paper before the media vultures had the chance to jump down his throat and issue an apology was the way to go.

If he sat down and allowed the journalists to ask questions like "talk about Reading Rafa" we know the response would have been that Rafa would prefer to talk about the game with Stoke and whilst there are some who know this is the correct answer, it would have looked cowardly to others. Of course they still asked but he gave them the chance the ask the question again put differently; the matter of the FA Cup exit was over and done with. No doubt a certain manager down the motorway would not have accepted questions from journalists if he also stated he didn't want questions of a defeat from a game that has nothing to do with the current press conference.

And to me that piece of paper was definitely on behalf of the players and coaching staff and not just Rafa. Just got that vibe from it.

If Fergusong or Maureen did something like that, all the reporters would have been laughing. That is class. Doing that at exactly the same time last year, before a Stoke game, saw a turn in our form for the worst (I don't blame the 'facts rant'), and hopefully it changes our form to its best this time! Kwality stuff, from the Boss!

The people who want him to go need to step back and analyze the situation from a distance.

Forget all the ownership issues, beach balls, poor officiating for a second and look at one noticeable obstacle to our progression this season: injuries.

We've had an injury crisis of biblical proportions in which the likes of Torres, Gerrard, Benayoun, Riera, Aquilani and Johnson have been out for with injuries totalling months on the sidelines. They are probably our six best creative, attacking players gone, often two or more at the same time, for long stretches. Not a few games, not a couple of weeks, but months. When they have returned, the likes of Gerrard, Riera, Torres, Benayoun and Johnson have still had lingering injury or fitness woes. Add to that there have been injuries to Skrtel, Agger, Aurelio, El Zhar, Kelly and Mascherano.

To be five points away from fourth and still with a shot at gaining some European glory is pretty remarkable under the circumstances. Although I think this hasn't been a great season, I think Rafa has managed to keep us in a decent position given our injuries alone, let alone the grandiose levels of misfortune, poor form, lack of confidence etc.

Lets give Rafa a bit of time to get it right. yep we have had a awfull season so far. Injuries, players not peforming etc.... Yes he has made mistakes, some of them whoppers, but he is not alone.

Some one on the board needs to make a decision and quick to save/support Rafa from any more abuse from the media. If I was the owner I would call a conference and state Rafa is staying to continue the fight. We got alot of sorting out to do. But we will get there with Rafa.

We can turn it around!
He is not the only one who isnt getting things right. The players have a lot to answer for. Also Capt Gerrard has not been doing the captains job very well at the moment and hasnt done so for a while now, possibly due to his injury. Don't see anyone saying sack Gerrard etc...  Gerrard needs to start rallying the troops and show a bit of liverpool heart.  We need a strong leader to get us through this and I personally would give the captains job to carra. Havent seen any statements form gerrard about Rafa. Carra & torres seem to be the only ones who have come out.  The players need a good shake/wake up.  We need to get back to basics, same starting eleven. using the players in areas were they are strong. Above all they need to get out of the dummy sucking mood they are in. No wonder Rafa's looking weak when speaking to the media. When some of his team are acting like babies.

I will support Rafa through this terrible time and suggest you all have a good look in mirror and do the same. Again its not all rafa's fault. Give him a break for goodness sake.  As long as he is manager he has my full backing. Iam more disappointed in some of the players attidudes. There on more money then I would ever dream of and they can't show a bit of hard graft on the feild.

Thats me done.... We all got keep the faith in rafa or we will be in trouble. The only ones that can get us out of this mess is everyone rallying together and supporting each other.

The tide will change and it will make us stronger in the future.

Whats he saying?

He's saying we're no longer a top 4 club due to the lack of funding by the owners. Need to get a few Liverpool fans on just to shut that fat (I'll respond from the obvious) gough up. Nothing annoys me more than people who have nothing to do with my club telling me who we should sack or buy.

For anyone who hasnt seen it yet.

Haha boss, I was sitting in the pub before and it came on SSN. It was on mute and couldn't hear it so I thought they were showing Rafa's 'rant' again when I saw him take the piece of paper out, then as he put it back a smile crept across his face and I knew then it was him taking the piss out of himself and the press.

I'll always keep in my heart the good times I've had here, the strong and loyal support of the fans in the tough times and the love from Liverpool. I have no words to thank you enough for all these years and I am very proud to say that I was your manager.
