Draw tomorrow. Because the Europa League was too easy to understand.

Meh is about all I can muster the enthusiasm to say about it.

League A
Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Spain, France, England, Switzerland, Italy, Poland, Iceland, Croatia, Netherlands

UEFA Nations League explained

Teams will be split into four groups of three, with the group winners then contesting the UEFA Nations League Finals (semi-finals, third-place match and final) in June 2019 to become the UEFA Nations League winners. One host country will be appointed in December 2018 from among the finalist teams.

The four sides that finish bottom of their groups will be relegated to League B for the 2020 edition.
The top four-ranked League A teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter play-offs in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

League B
Austria, Wales, Russia, Slovakia, Sweden, Ukraine, Republic of Ireland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Northern Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Turkey

Teams will be split into four groups of three. The four group winners are promoted to League A, with the four sides that finish bottom relegated to League C for the next competition, to be played in 2020.
The top four-ranked League B teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter play-offs in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

League C

UEFA Nations League brand story
Hungary, Romania, Scotland, Slovenia, Greece, Serbia, Albania, Norway, Montenegro, Israel, Bulgaria, Finland, Cyprus, Estonia, Lithuania

Teams will be split into one group of three and three groups of four. The four group winners are promoted to League B, with the four sides that finish bottom relegated to League D for the 2020 edition.
The top four-ranked League C teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter play-offs in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

League D
Azerbaijan, FYR Macedonia, Belarus, Georgia, Armenia, Latvia, Faroe Islands, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Liechtenstein, Malta, Andorra, Kosovo, San Marino, Gibraltar

Teams will be split into four groups of four, with the four group winners promoted to League C for the 2020 edition.
The top four-ranked League D teams that do not qualify for UEFA EURO 2020 will enter play-offs in March 2020, with one finals place on offer.

How the line-ups were determined

The 55 participating teams were split according to their position in the UEFA National Team Coefficient Rankings following the end of the European Qualifiers for the 2018 FIFA World Cup (as per 11 October 2017; play-off results will not be included).

League A includes the 12 top-ranked teams. The next 12 teams are in League B, the next 15 in League C and the remaining 16 in League D.

It beats friendlies.

Have to say, though, if you didn't think 24 nations at the Euro's was bad enough with some rank average sides & an awful format, the prospect of one of these nations definitely being at the next one makes it even worse:

Wales could theoretically draw both of the Irish teams. For the love of god, please let it be ANYONE else. Sweden, Denmark or Czech Republic would be ideal. Ta.

So for the 4 teams that automatically qualify do they still have to play the euro qualification games as I'm assuming this runs alongside that?

Real winners of this competition are the big names who screw up and get another route, and the B group who could have 2 spots if all the A group qualify normally.

Of course counteracted by the Euro's having 2 shite teams that will ruin goal difference when used to find the best 3rd place teams as all but guaranteed to be two groups with those members.

So let me get this right...

You can only win the shiny trophy they had if you're in league A? But if you always qualify for the Euros via the normal method, you can never win the trophy?

You can only win the trophy from league A with the 4 group winners going into the semis. The Euro qualification is a separate thing. If you don't qualify through the normal Euro qualification and you win your group you will go into the play offs for your league.

Its not more of it but replaces the friendlies which is a good thing. If I were a team like Scotland and you don't win your first couple of games you might as well lose the rest on purpose so you get relegated to league D and make it pretty much guaranteed that you qualify for the next tournament.

How are Netherlands a Pot 1 team?!

Because UEFA didn't use the FIFA World Rankings (where it is true that Netherlands are behind the likes of Denmark and Wales), but their own "UEFA Country Coefficients" where due to Wales' loss on the final day of qualifying, vs Netherlands winning vs Sweden, pushed the Netherlands ahead of both Wales and Austria by the narrowest of margins.  Why they use this method is beyond me, although as it doesn't include friendlies at all, I can half see the appeal - also, as they only calculate it every other year in November, and then it is calculated as ("40% of average of points earnt in the qualifying groups that have just finished, 40% on the performance in the previous cycle of qualifying and tournament, and 20% on the one before that") it is much more static, and long term.

Someone correct me here, but if the top 20 teams qualify for Euro 2020 - then the 4 B teams who are relgated to C for the next campaign will also be the A playoff teams? and 8 C teams will playoff for 2 spots? Bit mad.
