Really feels like he's "arrived".
You cannot call overseas Liverpool supporters glory hunters. We’ve won one trophy this decade. If they’re glory hunters, they’re really bad ones. They’re actually journey hunters. It’s the journey and the story. Something about Liverpool has grabbed them." - Neil Atkinson (May, 2019)

So we’re winning 2-1 and not much time left. He makes an excellent save and then retrieves the ball. Most keepers would have fallen to the ground wasting time. Instead he has his wits about him, takes a chance, throws to Sturridge and then 3-1.

Alisson and Van Dijk. World record signings for their respective positions that are now considered bargain buys and worth 3-4 times more. Fantastic signings, the absolute spine of the team that makes pretenders become true contenders. Absolutely brilliant piece of business by the club

Have to admit I was wrong about this guy. At the start of the season I would have stuck with Karius as I couldn’t see ability wise there was much in it between the two to justify the big spend.

However more than being a better goalkeeper skill or ability wise (he is, that much is very clear now) he has brought a presence in much the same way Virgil has. He commands respect and you can see that the whole squad have complete belief and trust in him which they didn’t have in Karius.

Worth every penny and I’m very happy to have been proven wrong

Great photo. I was unsure before whether that was going in or not but this proves it. Not many goalkeepers would have been able to stop that one.

So a little something I've been  working on, it's still a work in progress but thought I would share it.

I basically look at all shots on target and look at the net difference in xG for each situation. So for example if a goalkeeper faces 10 shots in open play each with an xG of .5 and saves 6 he has has a net positive xG recorded of 0.5 *.  If on the other hand he concedes 6 he will have a negative 0.5, and if he saves 5 shots the net balance will be 0.

That way we can look at shot quality in effect for each situation. I'm still trying to figure out how to mitigate sample size here. Even though it's a net balance I'm still concerned whether the result is distorted if some gk's face twice the number of shots others do (compare Hart to Alisson for an example of this). In the meantime I have restricted my analysis to Goalkeepers who have played more than 450 mins (5 games).

I also prefer to remove Penalties as they are 'rare' events with high xG values and therefore can skew the results but have included it here in the 2nd viz if you're interested.

* edit: Actually just realised that the net balance would be +/-1  but you get the gist

"Shot quality" has always irked me.

I think a better metric they could use would be "GK positioning". A "good quality" shot on target and a "poor quality" shot on target are equally likely to become a goal, depending on the keeper's position. Also, "Shot quality" is subjective as far as I'm concerned.

And I'm saying that having seen my top scorer for one of my youth teams shin every goal he's scored this season :D

Speaking of shot quality and keeper positioning, did Dasayev have a chance against Whelan during the 1988 Euros? For a long time I denied the evidence of my eyes and convinced myself it was a perfectly executed bicycle kick by Whelan. Part of it was due to me thinking that the USSR team was the most glamorous football team in the world, with the names rolling off the tongue like the names of Olympian gods, and here was Liverpool's Ronnie Whelan scoring a beautiful goal against them.

He's the VVD of goalkeepers. He has no weaknesses whatsoever and is a real leader at the back. Unbelievable signing.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan.
