Not my fave episode, that goes to Marooned.

It was great 1-6, 7, 8 and the newest ones were shit.

Marooned is one of the best written, acted and great episodes of any sitcom ever made. And I say that utterly seriously. Love it to this day.

Oh yeah, it's brilliant. A science fiction show relying totally on dialogue is rare enough. The fact it's so great, and infinitely rewatchable is a bonus.

Spot on.

I don't ever need to see anything past series 1-6.
I trust the King, but if we lose a few more on the trot now - he may have to step aside, and we have to purchase another manager in the middle of the season. If we are relegated, this could be the end of our ambitions to win any title the next 100 years.

'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' is one of the best episodes of any sitcom ever in my book. Series 1-6 of Red Dwarf is genius. Lost count of the amount of time I've watched them and they still don't get old.

I always thought that it was the same wrighters right through.  Grant & Naylor ?

The problem with a series like that, is that the first six were written almost as one continuous project. And then they stopped.
When they tried to revive it, after a break of what? about five years?  It was never going to be the same.  By then it had just lost it's zest.

The complete last couple of series, had about the same chuckle factor of just one episode of the early stuff.

Also a factor, was the fact that in the early days, all of the actors were up and coming unknowns, for the most part.  It was fresh, and they had something to prove. They were still a bit raw, and it showed, and came accross as a group of mates having a laugh.

By the later series, they were seasoned actors, and it showed. It had lost a lot of that raw-ness and cheekyness about it. The gags were more obvious and telegraphed.

I'll give it a look, but the specials were so, so bad I'm not holding out a lot of hope. It was painful and embarrassing to watch if i'm honest, because i love the early series so much.

The specials were shite, they made 7 and 8 look good! Just wasn't sure what they were tying to do with it, I kinda got the impression that it's what they wanted to do with the Red Dwarf movie.

Love this clip, so many decent lines!

I love the first two series, after which point I think Cat and Kryten's involvement grew and (while I love them both) the dynamic changed a lot.

Still, after that I think Series 6 is superb, 3 is great, and Marooned is brilliant.

7 and 8 were poor. Specials were pretty bad, made worse by the lack of a laughter track.

I remain optimistic for the new episodes - I'm confident that the writers will take the fans' feedback on board.

To be honest, I think it tailed off after Series 4. I absolutely love the show, but 5 and 6 were hit and miss. There are still some absolute gems like Back to Reality and Gunmen of the Apocalypse, but it was going downhill and there are some terrible episodes.

Series 7 actually stands up fairly well. It's quite cleverly written in parts. The problem is that it's just not funny enough.

I don't have any hope for it going forward, but the first three series especially are absolute genius, and as good as any British comedy of the last 20-30 years.

Marooned is excellent. I also love the one where they all forget (Where Rimmer got Listers Memories) and they were trying to work out where the time went and why they had broken feet.

I do have them all on DVD, I agree that 1-6 are the best but 7 and 8 do have some funny moments in them. Just a shame that they are very rare. Had to buy them to get the Red Dwarf lettering completed in any case ;)

"The time for talking is over. Now call it extreme if you like, but I propose we hit it hard, and we hit it fast, with a major, and I mean major, leaflet campaign. "
- Rimmer, Polymorph

how could I forget this, hehe

Erm, I think we're losing sight of the real issue here, which is: what are we gonna call ourselves? Erm, and I think it comes down to a choice between "The League Against Salivating Monsters" or my own personal preference, which is "The Committee for the Liberation and Integration of Terrifying Organisms and their Rehabilitation Into Society." Erm, one drawback with that: the abbreviation is "CLITORIS."

Rimmer: "You don't think there's anything amiss? I'm sitting here wearing a red and white checked gingham dress and army boots and you think that's un-amiss?"

Rimmer: "Look, just because it's an armour-plated alien killing machine that salivates unspeakable slobber doesn't mean it's a bad person. What we've got to do is get it round a table and put together a solution package - perhaps over tea and biscuits."

Cat: Why don't we just break out the lasers?
Kryten: An excellent plan, sir, with only two minor drawbacks. One, we don't have a power source for the lasers; and two, we don't have any lasers.

Rimmer: Kryten, you're forgetting about Space Corps Directive 1742!
Kryten: 1742? "No member of the Corps should ever report for duty in a ginger toupee." Well, thank you for reminding me about that regulation, but I can't see how it is pertinent to our present situation.

The Cat: Why don't we drop the defensive shields?
Kryten: A superlative suggestion, sir. With just two minor flaws. One, we don't have any defensive shields. And two, we don't have any defensive shields. Now I realise that technically speaking that's only one flaw but I thought that it was such a big one that it was worth mentioning twice.
