Doesn't get involved in the niggly stuff. Like pushing and shoving, squaring up to players or getting in the referee's face. Keeps the yellow cards to a minimum.

Are you talking about Jocky or Virgil Van Dijk?

Like mentioned before, he doesn't have to. Do we ever see him go into a sliding tackle? Never needs to. I'm running out of superlatives to describe him really. I honestly think it's a shame he was still playing at Southampton at 26.

Yeah, but the way he plays, I could see him being a top class CB at 35+.

Under the entry for imperious in the dictionary, there's a picture of this guy :D

Without any hyperbole, I'd say he's been the best signing (bar Sami!) I can recall in my 30 odd years of supporting Liverpool. Absolute leader of men.

Van Dijk being incredible is so routine that people wrote about Matip instead. The mark of a world class player, he helps elevate those around him. And in Virgil and Alisson we have two world class players that it’s almost unfair

It's interesting if he can ever win Ballon D'Or. I don't remember it given to any defender but Beckenbauer. But I'd cross my fingers for him, he's worth it.

Late to this, but Cannavaro won it in 2006. All he had to do was captain Italy to the World Cup in a basically flawless performance.  ;)

Virgil was great again today, of course, and it doesn't seem to matter who we slot in next to him, they step up. Waiting for Klopp to move Milner to centerback at some point...

We’ve not had a better centre half since Hyypia.

Any chance of a title hope will hinge on him and one or two others staying fit

Fantastic player, best player in his position right now in this league and arguably any other

Both he and Alisson have made their transfer fees irrelevant, and I just don't mean their performance.  I mean in relation to the media, who have not had any opportunity to use the fees against them.

He's started to pick up the end of year gongs already...

Click on the link for the full article (journos rely on clicks so I won't post the whole thing).

Spoiler: Virgil van Dijk is F365’s player of 2018

With apologies to whoever writes Football365’s annual list of the greatest players of this calendar year, I am unashamedly giving away the ending. The wizard is just a man speaking through a microphone, Roger Kint is Keyser Soze, Tyler Durden is not real and Virgil van Dijk is our player of 2018. The man who finished eighth in 2016 after a stellar year with Southampton will finish first in 2018 after a phenomenal year with Liverpool. He has been nothing short of magnificent.

Last year’s list contained just one centre-half – Cesar Azpilicueta – amid a general bemoaning of the standard of defending in the Premier League and beyond. Our winner was Kevin De Bruyne and Daniel Storey noted that ‘most impressive are the immeasurables’ while other players had scored or assisted more. The immeasurables are equally – if not more – impressive with the Dutchman, who is almost unbeatable in the air and pretty damned good on the ground too. He is a mass of contradictions – physically a colossus and yet wonderfully elegant, predictably reliable and yet surprisingly excellent, demanding all the attention and yet disappearing into the background.

that was my initial thought, but after watching the replay you can see why the ref gave it.. studs up into the shin after getting the ball.
did i hear the comms right that he will miss the next game?.
back to the game itself, he was a monster..money well spent and well worth klopp waiting for him and not buying  stop gap

Much much better tackle than that one considering it happened in the middle of the pitch and in a situation where that was his only recourse. The Gomez was by the corner and he was scissored after the ball was won suggesting that the ball was much closer and didn't need a slide.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. No malicious intent, clearly won the ball first and his follow through went into a player running at full pelt (i.e. he really couldn't have known Mertens was going to be planting his foot there at the split second his follow through landed).  That said, he did hit Mertens on the ankle so for me it's probably a yellow.

Compare and contrast Mertens reaction though - triple roll and acting as though he'd broken his leg - to Salah after Koulibably hit him late on the top of the foot.  Salah got up, rubbed his foot and got on with it even though he was clearly in a lot of pain.

It boggles my mind that with a front line of Salah, Mane and Firmino fans are heaping praise on Van Dijk and Alisson. In most teams a CB and a keeper would not shine with that attacking line, but these two are both truly, truly special!

They both make up the true bedrock of our team right now. Just those two. They’re are exceptionally good at what they do defensively and in goal, of course. What sets them apart is their intelligence and the fact they’re two of the most attack minded players in their positions I’ve ever seen. Truly exceptional quality on the ball, intelligence, and a keen eye for a goal scoring opportunity. You don’t normally get those skills together with world class craft on the defensive/goalkeeping side though. And that i havent seen before.

The yellow card was justified. And so was that Mee tackle on Gomez. Nowhere in the rules it says that if you win the ball is not a foul, just different refs interpret it differently.

But as BazC said,
That performance after the yellow card.

The yellow card was pretty harsh as far as he concerned, because it was a great challenge, it's just unlucky for us that he catches his leg. Very bad for Mertens  :wave
