The version by Bat for Lashes was pretty slick too.

Quite a few have mentioned Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah. But his arrangement of the song on Grace was actually nicked from John Cale, who covered it on a Leonard Cohen tribute album called 'I'm Your Fan' about four years earlier. Cale's is far superior IMHO.

Agreed. Here it is in its stark simplicity here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEOZLQ3d1FI

or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nzu4LE667VM

or with a nice string backing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ckbdLVX736U

Strange song Hallelujah; loads of great cover versions but the original stinks IMO and yet if you didn't know you'd bet your house on Cohen nailing perfectly. Too busy writing all 4576 verses to get the arrangement right, perhaps :)

BTW I love the comment exchange in that first YouTube link:

"Gotta be honest, I'm a pretty solid Atheist but this song still manages to get to me."

"Me too. But no worries,it's about cumming, not God."

 :D

This girl Paula Flynn did a cover of Bowie's Let's Dance which seems to be quite popular here at the moment. I think I prefer the original.

Both Dylan songs covered by Jimi:
All Along the Watchtower &
Like a Rolling Stone (Jimi plays Monterey)

Hendrix brings them both to life, great covers.

Regardless of the arrangement, for me, Cohen's version is the definitive version. You can practically hear his tongue in his cheek throughout - the whole song is a pisstake. All cover versions I've heard have played the song completely straight, as if it's an epic love song. It isn't.

Far better than fucking Mariah Carey's Jeff Buckley's overblown take on it anyway. Cale's version's pretty decent.

On the original topic, I prefer Emmylou Harris' version of Pancho And Lefty to Townes Van Zandt's original.
