I've always found it strange that he was fairly high up, head of department I think, in a big radio station despite being thick as fuck (and having a head like an orange)

I've always thought that too.

Just listened to one of their first ever radio shows from XfM back in 1998. Its pretty strange when they start talking about the Spice Girls breaking up
My mate is Sarah Harding's cousin from girls aloud, he looks a fair but like her which is a bit weird when i'm cracking one off over MTV like

That's indicative of how fucking shite the media industry is though.  You don't get to heads of department by being qualified, you get there by being popular and over-confident and well-dressed.
It's basically Nathan Barley.
Is it so shocking?  What was the last programme you saw, heard, that was any good?  BBC documentary on whales or something?  Panorama on MP's expenses?  Unless you've got 'talent' running the show (Gervais, Boosh, etc) then you're at the whim of a shallow fuckwit producer with illusions of his/her work being amazing.  The director's dont give a fuck, they're just paid to frame the work of the producer.  The producers are mostly 27 year old history graduates who shoe-horn their way into production companies through mates, and ponce about in skinny jeans and have a flat in London paid for by mummy.

Ooooooh, I've tasted it Rusty, I've tasted the bitter fruit.

Halfway through the animation, its previous material from the podcasts but the visual examples of the things they are talking about does add to the humour and its very funny.

Dunno if people who haven't listed to the podcasts before will enjoy it though. Wonder how successful the premier was, is Friday night on HBO a big time slot? Think some of the references will be lost on yanks too.

Just watched it. It was alright. They don't seem to be having as many shows as podcasts either- there were bits cut out in that first episode from the first podcast, and stuff from the second.

Anybody know the first XFM show with Karl in, I've got what I thought was the first one dated 10/11/2001 but listening to it, it's obviously Karl has been on before (not just pushing the buttons).

2001-11-10. This show is the earliest known recording of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant on Xfm following their return to the station after the Capital Group takeover.

First of the animated series was on the other night, downloaded and watched earlier. Brilliant!

Had a look at that animated show, thought it was quite good. Even if you've listened to the podcasts countless times, the animations just add that icing on the top.

I've only listened to about 3 or 4 of the podcasts so everything should be new to me when it comes to watching the animations. Anyone know any many are going to be shown in a series? HBO usually have 12-13 episodes in a series but I have no idea if that translates to animated series as well.

Theres going to be 13 episodes in this series and depending on how successful it is it'll be renewed. Pretty sure it will be.

There's 12 episodes in season 1 of the podcasts so that'll be the first season for the animation.

I find it odd Karl being so strict in his imaginary plumbing business re: not being able to get into work.  I seem to recall in the XFM days there was one day he didn't go in because he had put wet trousers on!

Haha true he was always on holidays and stuff too!

Another gem was Ricky: 'You don't mind beetroot?' Karl: 'Depends what im having' ;D

The matress stuff was talked about on XFM though although Ricky admitted they recycled some old shit :P

HBO RENEWS THE RICKY GERVAIS SHOW FOR SECOND SEASON

LOS ANGELES, March 24, 2010 – HBO has renewed the animated comedy series THE RICKY GERVAIS SHOW for a second season, it was announced today by Michael Lombardo, president, Programming Group and West Coast Operations, HBO.  Production on the new episodes will begin later this year, with debut slated for 2011.

Based on the record-breaking podcast, the series launched Feb. 19 on HBO, and currently debuts new episodes on Friday night (9:00-9:30 p.m. ET/PT).  The show is voiced by Gervais, his longtime collaborator Stephen Merchant and colleague and friend Karl Pilkington, whose offbeat musings inspire many of the storylines.

Topics discussed in season one include:  a Serbian man who invented a sex machine for women, a dialogue about America’s first nudist organization, a serum that ages dead people backwards, the rarity of seeing a homeless Chinese person, customs of undocumented tribes in New Guinea, the true meaning of such sayings as “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones” and the meaning of “a stitch in time saves nine,” as well as the popular recurring “Monkey News” segment.

“Ricky’s hilarious show has sparked a loyal and enthusiastic following that is  growing steadily, and we’re happy to bring the show back for another season,” noted Lombardo.  “It will be fun to see what new insights Karl has next time.”

Says Gevais, “I am absolutely thrilled to get a second season and continue the partnership with the best channel in the world.  I couldn’t wait to tell Karl.”

Responds Pilkington, “Makes no difference to me.  I haven’t seen any money from the first season yet!”

The 13-episode first season of THE RICKY GERVAIS SHOW, which concludes May 21, has inspired critical praise, as well as devoted viewers.  The New York Times said the series is “proof that big laughs can come in small doses,” while the New York Post described the show as “crazy fun,” and the Houston Chronicle observed that the show’s “pointless conversations will keep you in stitches.”

THE RICKY GERVAIS SHOW is produced for HBO Entertainment by Media Rights Capital in association with Wildbrain Entertainment; executive producers, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant, Karl Pilkington, Glyn Hughes and Bob Higgins; co-executive producer, Lisa Ullmann; supervising producer, Margaret M. Dean; consulting producer, Loren Bouchard; producer, Michelle Papandrew.

Excellent, the more Karl the better. :D

yes! i spent ten minutes googling it last night, but nothing came up except his voiceover for the psp so i wasn't sure if it actually was him.
