I don't think you need to change anything Prof. 90 points is the threshold to "guarantee" top spot, as no team has finished 2nd with that number of points (although it could change this season).

And although some teams muck up their own Par 1 / Par 3 status, it's still the same for all teams competing at the top of the table. So if Burnley are poor for the whole season, then they're poor for everyone, and visa versa for Watford.

The joy of the APLT is it's simplicity. Otherwise you're gonna need to look at isolated periods of form (how do you deal with Burnley being crap whilst they were in Europe, but hitting their stride once they go 1 game per week?), or some teams having a hex over others (like Chelsea over Spurs, until last season). It'll just get too messy.

In short ... I'm happy the way it is at the moment, and the way it's always been. It was a brilliant concept from the start. Thanks for all of your work on it, Prof.

It is true that it is the same for all teams at the top, but only by the end of the season. The APLT is a way of ranking the games played. So for example if any team currently had just beaten Burnley and West Ham away that is +4 and makes them look good. Another team might not face those two away until gameweeks 36 and 38.

Season on season, there is very little movement of clubs in and out of Par 3 status. Typically one or two clubs at most. So it's a huge amount of work for little actual effect. The ideal would be to wait until the end of the season and do it all then, but by that point it is futile anyway.

The last 2-3 seasons there has been a lot of movement out of positions 7-10.

Yep. And they are now ordered by the position in the table.  I couldn't do this on the old version of excel, but I can on this version  ;D

The last 2-3 seasons there has been a lot of movement out of positions 7-10.

The APLT makes no distinction for teams in 7-10. Just the top 14.
Season  No of changes.
11/12     2
12/13     2
13/14     3
14/15     1
15/16     1
16/17     2

Fair point!

Any way it feels like Liverpool always have their fixture at a much harder time of the season than Utd have the corresponding one.

When would people say that teams really start playing true to form in a season?  I imagine this relates to match conditioning and match sharpness, so how long does this usually take once the season has started?

I thought something that Pep Guardiola said just after City's last game was interesting.

"We will improve. It's impossible after the World Cup mentally for the players to be in the best condition, the best approach. We need more time, and after the international break, the season starts properly in terms of having games every three days..."

That to me would suggest around 6-8 games into a season which is about what I was thinking, but I'm no sports scientist.

To be fair, United fans will likely be saying the exact opposite.

Thats quite interesting in that those going for the title, could quite easily be out of the running by the time they are 'up to speed'

And why its so important to pick up those ugly wins regardless of performance

We were on the 90 point line for the first four games, and then dropped. But that was our best start in recent times, 3 wins and then a draw. I don't recall us ever being above the line, at least after week one. Despite what some deluded Evertonians think, we actually haven't been strong starters recently, hence why this is out best start in 29 years.

Not to get ahead of ourselves- but is there going to be any space on the chart should we win away at Spurs. Spurs would plummet to the top 4 line.

We would have been above it after beating Arsenal away in 16/17, but then would have quickly tumbled below it when losing to Burnley.

We've got no chance away at spurs.  It's good we won the first four to offset the run of results we are about to get.

We've got a great chance away at Spurs. Obviously they are a good team, but we're not too bad ourselves!

Credit to the people who are doing this. It's nice reading at the moment. Hopefully we'll still be up there after the run of games coming up. So far so good.

We are shite at Wembley, and they've got our number. We'll also be coming back from an international break, with some players barely getting rest. We'll be lucky to get a draw.

Tottenham has won more games and scored more goals than any other club at Wembley. In Harry Kane, Tottenham has the greatest ever Wembley goalscorer. Liverpool will do well to keep this game close and respectable.

However- the 4 corresponding fixtures last year, in terms of the teams played, were also 4 wins. And four better wins too.

Thus- we are likely to get an even worse defeat than the 4-1 Spurs gave us last year.....

Hi Prof! I've been following the APLT for the past couple seasons and just got accepted to the forum the past week. I really love the whole concept but I don't seem to be able to view that beautiful graph this year, any thoughts on why that might be? Anyone else got the same problem?

Was the last graph you posted with the updated APLT results on September 2nd, reply #105? I just see a blank post from you (see attached screenshot). Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
