chelsea supporters not keen on the grauniad.  surely this has to be a good thing?

a straight lift from facebook...

Jeremy Drysdale
A spiteful little article by the irritating Marina Hyde. The fact that Swansea Manager Brendan Rodgers has 'ruled himself out of the running for the Chelsea job' surely indicates that he is a narcissistic fantasist, rather that acting as a guide as to how far the club has fallen.

And 'How would Roman Abramovich react to being a laughing stock at Chelsea?' is as halfwitted a headline as 'What would Ed Miliband do if a duck ran into his house?' and slightly less interesting than 'Is it any wonder that the bloke you sit next to on the bus has stopped reading newspapers because they are full of rubbish and written by fools?'

How would Roman Abramovich react to being a laughing stock at Chelsea?

They're slimy metropolitan liberals wielding overrated degrees in English from Oxbridge and UCL. They constantly condescend to Liverpool as a city because they don't consider it multicultural enough and because the only Michelin-starred restaurant is over in Birkenhead and because its an 'old Labour' place rather than a Polly Toynbee/Laurie Penny hub of political correctness and Diversity. Does any of that answer your question...?

Agree with this as well. No doubt, for me, about the bias in the sports section, but other than the occasional tedious scouse stereotype joke (and I don't find you see more of them then other tedious national or regional stereotype jokes, apart from, surprise surprise, tedious stereotype jokes about metropolitan champagne socialist types) I've never thought of their news section as biased beyond the kind of things that are typical in the modern media, and there, while they are certainly guilty, they are less guilty than the rest.

I've certainly not seen that approach in the rest of the paper, although it does scream out from the football section sometimes. Annoying as that is, though, it isn't, in my opinion, a good enough reason to cut myself off from a reliable source of news when, as you say, there really are no alternatives.

In fact, the Guardian is one of the few papers to carry positive stories about the city, the coverage of 2008 was much better than most of the other papers. I think there are lots of people who only read the back page, and that's what is fuelling this.
Fuck the Daily Mail.

From today's Fiver, ripping on both Arsenal and Man City...

EVERY LOSER … LOSES

Considering the industrial Dot Cotton-esque levels of smoke sent billowing up Arsenal's nether regions by assorted fans and media commentators in the wake of last night's 3-0 Big Cup win against Milan, a simple tea-timely email could be forgiven for thinking they had actually won the tie and advanced to the quarter-finals. But wade through enough of the warm gloopy praise being lavished upon the Gunners for long enough and you'll eventually trip over the only stat that matters: when push came to shove they weren't able to finish the job and were dumped out 4-3 on aggregate.

Yes, they did better than most expected last night, but if they hadn't played so abysmally in the San Siro they wouldn't have had a four-goal deficit to overhaul in the first place. And yes … they probably could have put Milan to the sword if they'd had a stronger bench, but then Arsenal's lack of strength in depth has been a source of frustration for so long, it's no surprise it proved their undoing again. But amidst all the happy-clappy talk of "restoring pride" in a match they might as well have lost 35-0 as won 3-0 for all the good it did them, deep down Arsenal fans must know last night's laudable but ultimately futile bottle-job has left them with far more questions than answers. Questions like …

• Why can't our under-achieving players play like that more often?

• How much will we get for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain when Manchester City buy him?

• Where will that money go?

• How much will we get for Robin van Persie when Manchester City buy him?

• Where will that money go?

But for the time being at least, such questions are likely to go unasked by the kind of people whose grasp of logic dictates they boo their team off after pre-season friendlies they've drawn, only to cheer them to the rafters for exiting the biggest competition in club football a wee bit less limply than expected. By Monday night when Arsenal's shattered players take on Newcastle, some Gooners will be so confused about what to do next they'll probably turn up to watch the match at White Hart Lane.

But while their team might be out of the tournament, its manager has unfinished business, with Arsene Wenger charged by Uefa for post-match effing and jeffing at the officials. "I was not happy with the referee because he gave them many free-kicks in the centre of the park," said Wenger, who then went on to apportion much blame for his side's demise to the San Siro pitch, which he described as "unfit for football". Now the Fiver's memory is shorter than that of even the most fickle fan, but we vaguely recall Milan coping with that particularly sward fairly well.

TEVEZ TREATS CITY FANS WITH UTTER CONTEMPT, CITY FANS APPLAUD HIM ON AND OFF THE PITCH AT A RESERVE MATCH. FOOTBALL … BLOODY HELL

I really enjoy some aspects of the Guardian but have also noticed an unfortunate move to more sensationalist tabloid journalism, especially since January. However the Rumour Mill is quality as always with what seems to be as a very irregular dig at Hodgson.

"The latter transfer would force the Baggies manager Roy Hodgson into picking a new member of staff to repeatedly castigate in public whenever anything goes wrong. Early runners for the role are Shane Long (2-1), Graeme Dorrans (5-1), the reserve keeper Marton Fulop (20-1) and himself (500,000-1)" :D

Guess which headline they went with:

"Glen Johnson speaks out in support of his teammate"
or
"Glen Johnson reignites racism row"

have always read the guardian and liked their football coverage, however been getting more and more fucked off with it recently. there's been worse but the headline ''Kenny Dalglish: 'Kit deals and a happy club are as good as points'.'' has done it for us. seems like since the whole News of the world thing and people realising tabloids spout shite that the guardian have benefited. their whole thing on facebook pisses me off too, trying to brand a source of news is utterly pathetic. they certainly seem more concerned about clicks on their online articles more than taking a step back from the usual shit in papers and providing balanced views

Funny, that one tipped me over the edge as well. Even sent them an angry tweet (get me, eh? intimidating) telling them to sort their shit out. Just unbelievable that they made a headline of something that wasn't even said, such a pointless, newsless, distortion that it exposed a very real antagonism from them towards LFC.

Noticed they've shelved the Saturday back page in favour of an ad, which was a shame because Barney Ronay is pretty funny.
I actually reckon they must have got some budget issues in Sport, given their lack of decent reporting, reduction of columns and making that utter bellend Daniel Taylor chief football writer.

Yeah they've been doing some massive cost-cutting in the Sport section, pretty much giving up on it as a sensationalist tabloid add-on to a serious paper.

Even worse than that Kenny headline was Kevin McCarra's blog that seemed to treat that headline as a direct quote.

You know something's gone horribly wrong when a very even-handed calm Daily Mail piece is being turned into a hyped up frenzy of bullshit by the Guardian.

They've been losing shitloads in the last few years so it's pretty clear why they've gone down the tabloid get as many page views as possible route

Funny thing is that Jonathan Wilson started the blizzard because he was fed up of what newspaper websites writing has become, and he writes for the guardian

what's he said?

Heaton questions why anyone should give a shit what he says re: Liverpool, Taylor launches into a tirade trying to justify his spite by drawing on the 'Munichs' quote from four years ago (which was obviously deplorable, but he's apologised and moved on), rather than confront his own ineptitude as a football journalist. And he deleted Jim Boardman's comment on an article which referenced this, from Taylor's book:

I have to say I found it amusing that when we signed Downing, Barney Ronay was actually quite positive, and said that any LFC fans who were underwhelmed should give him a chance:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/blog/2011/jul/08/stewart-downing-liverpool-steve-mcclaren

Then over the course of the season they've pretty much written him off as a flop, and that anyone could have seen he was a dud signing.
He's made Kaizer wet himself with excitement then cry when he realises all in one post. Ban him? Knight him in the new year's honours!

largely agree with this.
at one point it seemed like an anti-Kenny piece was a daily occurrence.
I got the impression his treatment of the media in interviews was winding them up somewhat.

in recent years I think they've followed the Fox News model to a degree (albeit on the other side of the political spectrum), which is identify your core readership/audience and fill the paper with stuff you know they'll agree with.

The Guardian Football section is no longer a journalistic endeavour.*  (*Not entirely, but the business model. Quick asterisk payoff, eh?)

It is a newspaper succumbing to a post-newspaper world, with only ads and precious clicks to sustain it. Sports has been siphoned off as a commercial area to get more views to pay for the real news.

It is sensational, it is misleading, it can be amusing.

It is entertainment. Not news.

Absolutely. Mentioning Rafa gets a few million extra clicks on a page? Mention Rafa. Stir up the Liverpool fans by saying Kenny is out of touch, Suarez wants to leave, or whatever gets extra links? Go nuts.

It's the new form of trolling - ITK trolling. Except by reacting, we're giving them money instead of an ego boost.
