How do all...

I dug out Dr Octagon - Dr Octagonecolegyst the other night and it was superb to hear again. It's got me digging out some of my other favourites from that time but then it struck me that usually, when you think you know something about something, you can post it on RAWK and someone can point out some stuff that's even better. Soooo...

Here's my favourite trip hop albums (I love trip hop by the way). Please recommend more cos I have to try them out on my new earphones!

Also - my definition of trip hop might not tally up with yours so apologies if that's the case. I mean predominantly hip hop and breaks music with all kinds of genres thrown in to create a mood or make you laugh or generally fuck around with your head a little.

Dr Octagon - Dr Octagonecolegyst
DJ Shadow - Endtroducing
Tricky - Maxinquaye
Cream Live - James Lavelle
Coldcut Journey by DJ - 70 Minutes of Madness
Herbaliser Solid Steel - Original Full Recording
Kid Koala Solid Steel - Original Full Recording
DJ Food - Refried Food
DJ Krush - Meiso
UNKLE - Psyence Fiction
Hexstatic - Listen and Learn
Handsome Boy Modelling School - So, How's Your Girl?
Prince Paul - Psychoanalysis

Any more for any more? I've probably missed a good few out of my own cupboard but it was a good decade ago now eh? I heard Tim Westwood on the radio the other day say that he'd asked a young rapper who their favourite 'old school' artist was, and they said '50 Cent'. Amazing to think hip hop's been around so long that nobody remembers the genuinely old school stuff!!

Tricky - Maxinquaye ---------------> DARK AMAZING MASTERPIECE

Although I think Tricky kind of got pissed off when his music got labelled with that name.

I'dd add DJ Shadow to the list as well, not The Outsider but Private Press and Entroducing are top quality.

I read an interview with him about The Outsider and he said he was trying to make straight up Hip Hop these days instead of doing compositions.

I'd probably add Pre-Emptive Strike to the list by the way, albeit it's darker than dark. I remember a girlfriend having a listen when we were on holiday and she was like "woooaaah... wrist slitting anyone?" ;D

It's funny to see Gorillaz hit the mainstream actually isn't it? Damon Albarn also worked with Dan the Automator and Del the Funkee Homosapien on "Deltron 3030" around the same time he did Handsome Boy Modelling School. It's a bit too concept album for my taste but there are some good tracks on there.

Handsome Boy Modelling School is brilliant - totally recommend it.

Gorillaz had a built in fan base and a gimmick, all they needed was 1 decent single and they got it with Clint Eastwood.

I would have been shocked if they hadn't have hit the big time.

Yeah, I didn't mean that so much - just that they were tinkering around with ideas and it was funny to see them eventually strike the right formula.

Where's the Portishead love?

Here mate!

Dummy

Have to say I like their stuff but it's hit and miss for me. "The Rip" on Third is a belter I reckon though. Also, Andy Smith is great DJing in his own right and a great scratcher to boot (an underrated skill in my view in the hip hop/trip hop pantheon). That's another thread actually - greatest scratchers of all time. For me Mace from De La Soul is the finest ever cos he does it as an ingredient to the music more subtly than anybody else, but there are some real virtuosos eh?

Anyway Capon Debaser mate, thanks for the recs - I've got Lovage which is class (I love the Automator - another good one's "Bombay the Hard Way" which is him and Kid Koala - some rubbish but some great stuff too) but I'll look the Amon Tobin and RJD2 stuff out (thought he was a techno guy so shows you what you miss eh?) and these...

The newest Unkle album (War Stories) was one of the best by them IMO

Wax Tailor - tales of forgotten melodies
Lamb - What Sound

The Prince Paul/Automator stuff is quality.  Spot on about the Coldcut JDJ by the way. The Solid Steel podcasts are really good cos they throw in an old one every now and again. A few months back they did an old Kiss FM recording of Coldcut v The Orb with Matt Black and Alex Paterson throwing stuff on. It's superb.

Not sure if you lot will allow me to include these people in the trip hop category but it works for me.....

Morcheeba's "Who Can You Trust?"

Love it, love, love it!

But of course pretty much anything by Massive Attack will win the argument hands, feet, anyotherappendages down :thumbup

Totally agree about the scratching mate, ive been doing it a while and looking at those types you mentioned.have to give both a thumbs up and you seem to know your stuff. ;) but neither of them have anything on the likes on the likes of DJ Noize,C2C,Birdy Nam Nam, NETIK and of course Mix Master Mike

By the way mate.you got any links to those sopcasts etc.please ? im shit with stuff like that :P

I dunno about sopcasts mate - am supposedly in IT but I'm a dinosaur jr. The Solid Steel podcasts are all there for free off iTunes. Some great mixes on there going back but the best ones I got were when I was working at BUPA and they let you stream media - you could hunt back in the Solid Steel radio archive and get the full 3 hour mixes, a few of which have been done as CDs now.

The only one I've heard of off that list is Mix Master Mike, just cos of the Beastie Boys link... and he's a bit 'busy' for me, you know? Anyway, I don't know my stuff at all - it's years since I bought music regularly - nowadays it's the odd one here and there and a few for my birthday... but enough about my sex life (ho ho ho).

Anyway - sopcasts? Lemme know what you need dude :)

I left out stuff like Quannum Spectrum cos that felt like proper hip hop to me, you know?

Yeah - either that or 'trendy sports show bed music'. You'll be sat there and next thing you know DJ Food's gently trundling along in the background under a Hugh Laurie voice over.

wagon christ! killer record and wonderfully weird video.  i think the directors were fizzy eye.

There used to be a lot of good ninja tune videos on the nexuslondon site but when I last looked loads had been taken off. Am I right in thinking it's Luke Vibert?

Found one of them...

I'd definitely class the Leftfield stuff as trip hop...

i think leftfield where the ultimate dance music stylists - paul daley is obsessed with beats though more from the house and tech-house end of the spectrum.  its why they took so long to follow up leftism - major label's slow release schedules drove them mad as by the time they'd be ready to bring it out daley hated how the drums sounded feeling things had moved on.

there debut 'leftism' still sounds remarkably fresh though and how many brilliant early club moments are on there too.  i remember first hearing them on their first track together - the hard hands mix of 'not forgotten' at the coco club in brighton and feeling like the back doors had been blown off.  american garage had disappeared up its own arse with endless vocal reversions of the same plodding arrangements when suddenly british house reared up its snarling head and suddenly made things interesting again.

rodney though would only call his work hip-hop.  he is a maverick genius and its an all time crying shame that he's not the super star he should be.  if he'd been born in brooklyn his mixture of surrealism and wordplay would propel him into the major league but in the uk he's always been stuck on the margins as tv and radio just don't seem to know where to promote him.  mtv bass didn't want him scruffing up the bland materialism of the most vacuous rnb and mtv2 don't seem to see him slotting in between whatever crap they're playing these days.

a crying shame.  he is a fucking legend its just a shame he'll only be famous when he's dead.
