the hustle always makes me think of soundbeds on radio 1 during the 80s. how lazy to not think of anything contemporary. its like the holiday programme on bbc constantly using leftfield or indeed masterchef using the dire paul oakenfold track 'ready steady go'.

i think its safe to say that this is late period and therefore a wee bit novelty still not without its soul weekend vibes.

you want the patrick cowley mix. he was a gay san francisco dj who took the electronic thing to the next level though don't miss out on the moroder classics as he - for me - is the genius that pre-created house and techno. cowley, like most of his generation of sybaritic creators, died of aids when he was only 32 and in 1982 just when things were getting really interesting. i think his full mix is 18 minutes long - youtube always seems to cut these great things short - but i know that its my favourite record ever and that i've lost my mind dancing to it as much now as when i first enjoyed it in a club in 1985. laurent garnier always plays it in his sets in the same way derrick may always plays 'french kiss' by lil louis.

ku was originally an entirely open air club.

amenesia was just across the road with an altogether more hippy vibe but that's a different story.
