I think I've just realised why Chic didn't really wow me, it was light, open air concerts when it's not dark aint quite the same.

I've seen them once in a underground car park which was one of the best sets I've ever seen. The next time I went to see them was at an open air festival during the day. Two minutes into their set I lost my composure and missed the rest. You may be on to something regarding light levels.
