I have to say the trailer looked quite good. Fingers crossed for a return to form.

If it's "average" I'll be happy to be honest! Illogical I know but I've got a real soft spot for Dwarf.

In answer to your question... Not many, but trying to think of revived comedies - maybe Futurama?  Shooting Stars? Can't think of many sitcoms .. Do the Royle family specials count?

First reviews appearing of Episode 1 seem very promising:

(No spoilers in this review btw)

When Dave announced that it would be making a new six-part Red Dwarf series after 2009’s Back to Earth, it’s fair to say that many fans were cautious in their optimism; the three-part special had taken the characters down a much more dramatic route, and seemed to mark a shift in direction for the Boys from the Dwarf, one which took them away from their sitcom roots. Would Red Dwarf X continue this trend?

Put simply: no. Trojan, the first episode of Red Dwarf’s tenth series, immediately feels more like the classic show than anything that’s been broadcast in nearly twenty years, with a pair of opening scenes which each contain some strong jokes and build to neat crescendos for the characters. And yet, nothing here is without a purpose; both of these scenes contain gags that have superb pay-offs later in the episode - there’s one Cat moment in particular about halfway through the episode which is up there with some of the show’s greatest scenes.

It’s hard to say too much about Trojan without giving away the plot, but it’s a Rimmer-centric episode, with some ties to the past which will please long-term fans whilst not alienating any of the new ones. The entire final third of the episode is a treat, with lines and visuals that border on parody of another much-loved franchise, and some excellent guest performances from Susan Earl and in particular Mark Dexter, who brings out the worst in Rimmer in all the best ways.

Easily the star of the episode, though, is Danny John-Jules as Cat. Seeming far more comfortable in the role than he has for a very long time, Danny steals pretty much every scene he’s in, thanks in part to a script filled with some classic Cat lines.

One of the most talked-about aspects of the new series is the return of the live studio audience, and the difference is palpable; all of the Dwarfers have a sense of energy and fun in their performances that can only come when there is a crowd to seek approval from; and there are several jokes whose timing is visibly improved - one early Rimmer gag in particular is clearly drawn out for a moment or two longer than it might have been without a second wave of laughter to guide the performance.

Also returning after long absences are model shots, as well as specially-composed incidental music by Howard Goodall. As always used to be the case, these are used sparingly but effectively; Goodall’s score adds an extra punch to the scenes in which it appears, particularly towards the episode’s climax. And the model shots are little short of beautiful; this is Red Dwarf for the high-definition age, and clearly a lot of love and effort has gone into making the small rouge one ship-shape (pun intended).

The design is actually stunning all round; as you may have seen from the trailers, the action takes place in a more confined area of the Dwarf, redder than ever before. And it’s hugely detailed, with monitors constantly showing information and intricate set details that before would have gone unnoticed; if one series is going to persuade me to buy a Blu Ray player this year, it’s Red Dwarf X.

Trojan isn’t a perfect episode of Red Dwarf; there are a few jokes in the episode which are played a little too broadly, and at times the Lister subplot wanders into mediocre observational comedy. There are also a couple of slightly jarring references to 21st century life; that said, the first series of Red Dwarf alone contained references to Moss Bros, Kevin Keegan, Helen Shapiro and Norweb, so perhaps this is simply another aspect of the show’s early days making a return.

Because really, it does feel like a concerted effort has been made to take the show back to its early days. From the pleasingly Series 3-like appearance of the episode title to the small-scale, character-centric plot and barrage of jokes, you get the impression that Doug Naylor has been watching a lot of repeats on Dave whilst writing this new run, and that’s no bad thing.

This is Red Dwarf as it should be; four blokes (Well, one bloke, a hologram, a cat person and an artificial intelligence) in space, with humour that comes not from an increasingly outlandish set of circumstances (There’s no dinosaurs on this ship) but from the characters themselves and how the situations they find themselves in affect them. It’s fun, it’s funny, and if we can have another five like this then Red Dwarf XI (and beyond!) is going to be welcomed with open arms...

Red Dwarf X begins on Dave on Thursday the 4th of October at 9pm.

Oh wow, had no idea this was coming back! Don't really watch TV much these days so hadn't heard anything. I just hope there's a laugh track in it, i thought that was what really ruined "Back to Earth" a few years back, just didn't feel like the Red Dwarf we knew and loved without audience reaction to some of the things they were coming out with.

Made up as it's always been one of my favourite shows. One of the most memorable eps for me is probably when Rimmer and Lister are stranded in starbug on an icy planet. The bit at the end were Lister goes in the cupboard to grab his guitar after Rimmers big speech gets me every time.

And my favourite line, from series one "Oxygens for losers, cha cha cha"

That's the one! Lister playing shes out of my life on his guitar was great. And Rimmers reaction "Burn the soldiers!.. Burn them all!"

Another of my favourite scenes, no matter how many years pass or how often i see it, that last line still has me in tears.

Would be great if they did manage to bring it back with the flair and élan that marked the early series. Took advantage of the repeats to catch series 5 and quarantine in particular the other day. Absolutely brilliant, I remember Mr Flibble so clearly and fondly from when I was young.

I thought Series 6 had some fantastic episodes but looking back at an episode list then four had some great ones too - Justice, Dmension Jump, Meltdown.

Yeah, it just went to shit for me when Grant left (or was it Naylor?). Even the books they released seperately were rubbish.

It was Rob Grant who left. Was kind of a messy break up and most fans say it never really recovered.

Personally I still enjoyed it. But Naylor loves the action and scope whilst Grant preferred the smaller character based set pieces like Marooned.

My favourite bit of Red Dwarf are the DVD box sets. They went all out with that and the commentary tracks are gold

Rob Grant is the one who left. It does make you appreciate how well their writing complemented each other or that they just moderated each other's worst impulses.

Trailers make it look a bit like Series 5 or 6, certainly more so than either 7 or 8.

Which is good news to me. The best Dwarf, IMO, is S1, then 2, followed by 6, 3, 5, 4, 7, 8.

But everyone will have their own favourites I suspect.

I dug out all the DVDs to watch in the run up to the new series - thankfully Dave is sparing me the bother with this weekend malarkey.

Superb stuff, and I can't wait.

'Gunmen of the Apocalypse' is one of the best episodes of any sitcom ever in my book. Series 1-6 of Red Dwarf is genius. Lost count of the amount of time I've watched them and they still don't get old.

Yep, totally agree. Legion and the two emohawk's plus the despair squic are my other favs. Like you said, 1-6 superb, I've recently started watching them again on catch-up. Apart from the odd moment, what follwed was a travesty to the first six seasons, they were fucking awful. Seeing as Grant left at the end of season six you'd have to say it clearly didn't work without him on board.

I didn't even realise they were making some new ones until i saw this thread. Having a quick look on wiki, am i right in thinking Doug Naylor is writing it without the services of Grant? If so, I don't hold out a lot of hope for it considering what happened before.

Yeah, they really are very good those DVDs. Long interviews with the cast, and the commentary tracks are hilarious (even though it's obvious that the cast have never bothered to watch the episodes since they recorded them, maybe that's part of the charm)

Really surprised that Series 6 is rated so highly on here, thought it was by far the weakest series (not including 7 and beyond which are obviously are a big drop in quality). Gunmen is the one shining light in that series, the rest is a bit of cop out really. Emohawk is proof they were struggling for ideas, bringing back Duane and Ace and a Polymorph in 1 episode.

The main reason though is that the comedy lurches into gross out slapstick rather than because of brilliant writing it was before. Yep, by far the worst of the orginal series for me which is weird because the previous series was my favourite.

My order is 5,4,2,3,1....6

Heck, if we all liked the same thing then it'd be rather boring. I can understand why you didn't like it but the Rimmerworld ep was brilliant if not highly disturbing, and Legion and Out of Time both very good.

I love the starkness & loneliness of the first series. It feels a lot simpler than the others.

That said I love it all from Series 1-6, but prefer the ones before they lose red dwarf.

Looking forward to the new ones I have to say. I didn't ever see the previous Dave ones.

Be honest you wrote "Konchesky" by accident at first then delted it didn't ya?  ;)

Nah but i know what you mean, i wasn't best pleased when they brought her in, always preferred her as a fond memory of Daves rather than an actual character. She was more of a Marge Simpson character, nowhere near as funny as the rest and constantly pissed off at something.

Although her one on ones with Kryten due to his jealousy over lister made her more tolerable.

haha I like that episode where Kryten get's deemed as a female and makes 'krytee tv' after being hotwired by the cons. But I did hate her. Always wondered was it because 'Rimmer' went and did that brummy (health/fitness centre owner) programme that he left Red dwarf? Was that the same time he left? Brittas Something I'm sure?

C'mon though it's just a harmless fun show at the end of the day. Brilliant in it's day, just hoping the new one's will redeem the series' recent credibility a little!

Just read the synopsis for the first episode. In terms of plot, it does sound very old-school dwarf, which is promising.

Spoiler

I actually really liked Brittas Empire too, something about that Colin fella had me in stitches as a kid, and the ditzy receptionist, Carol i think her name was. Still not as good as RD though!

Just read the synopsis for the first episode. In terms of plot, it does sound very old-school dwarf, which is promising.

Sounds really promising that, looking forward to it more now. Someone on the IMDB message boards claims to have been in the audience for it and says it was one of the best eps he'd seen.

Bring on October.. Boys from the Dwarrrrf!

Always wondered was it because 'Rimmer' went and did that brummy (health/fitness centre owner) programme that he left Red dwarf? Was that the same time he left? Brittas Something I'm sure?

Just had a flashback - He did another one called "A prince among men" around that time too. I can't remember much about it apart from the theme tune and I seem to recall Chris used his Ace Rimmer voice.  Brittas empire was pretty good though.
