Eh ? The sales person hasn't got a clue, did you actually speak to the person that does the Omega desk ?

The speedmaster professional has always been a manual wind. Its only the last 2 yers that they brought out an auto. ( DONT BUY THE AUTO ).

The heritage is with the manual wind ! It has a 48 hour power reserve off winding it up. I like to wind mine everyday though, I do it first thing when I sit at my desk.

Not an everyday watch is an absolutely bizzare shout too, I don't even know why or how he has said that ? - The watch was good enough to land on the moon, ive worn mine everyday for a year and its still perfect.

Swap to the NATO strap if you want it more casual, I swap it to a leather if im wearing a dinner suit.

The speedmaster moon is the best watch you can buy in that price range.

Get it !

Great write up mate. Seriously I couldn't understand it. Instead of telling me how great the watch is he was trying to talk me out of it. It was strange.

How much is a leather strap for it?
Does it have a big face?
Do you have a metal strap?
Is it easy to change straps?
Any negatives about this watch from your point of view?

I wouldnt buy a brand new Omega. I'd buy a vgood 2nd hand one from watchfinder or similar. Leather straps can be £1 up to £50 and prob more. The speedmaster is big faced. Between 40-44mm. They come with metal straps generally which are a piece of piss to swap. It went to the moon, what negatives? Its heavy? A bit big? I cant think of any. Its a great watch, a classic and let someone else pay the depreciation.

If I wasnt saving for a new bike, I'd be in for a 2nd hand seamaster chrono.

Two ways to look at buying anew speedmaster.

You can buy used and pick one up for 2500 ? poss less, however if you get a decent deal on the grey market for the new moon watch - 2.8-3k you get the new box, complete with NATO strap ( 180 quid ), Velcro strap, a load of moon landing book and info, strap changing tool, loupe etc.

You could potentially sell the box and gear on ebay for £ 500 and just keep the watch. So you are getting a new speedy moon for the same price as a used.

Really depends on what you want to do. If you are going to buy and keep ( and I mean keep for life, pass it on etc ) id buy new.

If you are planning on getting it for a few years with the idea of trading in the future definitely buy used.

+1 for an Omega Speedmaster Professional Moon Watch, but I wouldn't get a new one. You could get one dating back to the era of the moon missions (REAL heritage!) that costs less money. It''a a no brainer! Given the weakness of the pound, this really would be a stupid time to buy a brand new imported watch.

That's the watch I wear!! Love my Omega Speedie moonwatch - the most beautiful chronograph, a true slice of horological history, and a rock solid Lemania 1861 movement. Every morning I have an espresso and enjoy the ceremony of winding it ;D

I could bang on about watches all day!! lol

Thoughts on Armani?

I would stay away from fashion watches personally - other than design aesthetics, they usually have a quartz movement inside worth a few quid and hold next to no value.

Before making a purchase at any price point, I'd recommend taking a step back and really doing your research - enjoy the watch buying journey.

I'm not a fan of quartz watches (run off a battery) so I'd personally stay away from them.

Go for a nice mechanical watch (automatic or manual wind both have their benefits). Watch geeks love Seiko at the budget end of the mechanical watch movement market (around $200 to $300) because they produce their movements in-house and represent stunnign value for money. The Seiko SKX line of mechanical watches represent amazing value for money and are a super entry point. Don't just think Seiko does just budget watches -their Grand Seikos are spectacular (although I personally would stick to Swiss made when I start going over $1000, purely because they hold resale value better ... Rolex, Omega, IWC, Tudor, Zenith ... of if you're fucking minted, Patek, Vacheron Constantin, AP, etc). The German make a good watch too (their most iconic brand being A. Lange & Söhne (or Lange for short).

Swatch are knowing for producing whimsical quartz watches but with really cool design aesthetics. The Swatch Sistem51 range is revolutionary as it is an automatic mechanical watch made from 51 parts and completely machine made (crazy for a mechanical watch that always requires some hand work). Around $150 to $200, game changing prices.

These are a couple of examples, I'd have something like that any day over an Armani fashion watch. Go for specialist watch brands and take your time.

Oh, and on a side note, I think David Moyes was wearing a gold Audemars Piguet Royal Oak in the Sunderland v Arsenal game last week. Put me RIIIIIIIIIGHT off the Royal Oak. AP beware, negative advertising is bad for your brand. lol

I've got a 1959 Seamaster which I bought last year but still haven't got round to getting it serviced.

Hi mate, not exactly in Liverpool, but the Clock Workshop in West Kirby on the Wirral, I got my 1968 Omega Constellation serviced for £85 including a new strap, Phoenix watches in Liverpool said it would cost £500 to service and the I only paid £615 for the watch, so I can highly recommend the Clock Workshop, Imperator on here uses them.

I think it's more accurate to blame the bastards who voted us out of the EU than to blame Rolex. They have no power over the currency markets.

The good news is if you already own a Rolex, it will have a knock on effect in the residuals on the second hand market, so your watch is likely to go up in value over the coming months.

Took the words right out my mouth ... thing is, if sterling bounces back will Rolex be kind enough to drop prices :) as if!

Don't think 'used', think 'classic'. Shop for a Speedie moon watch from 1969-1972 and it has the real heritage of dating from the time when they were actually being worn on the moon. A minty example will cost you about a grand less than a new one and will appreciate in value. Buy a new one and it will be worth £500 less as soon as you wear it, and will continue to depreciate in the years to come. It would be a mug's move to buy a new one now, especially with the weakness of the pound against the Swiss Franc and the Euro which is pushing retail prices on luxury watches right up.

Well how much was a Omega Speedmaster Professional before the pound went weak? 3k?

If I brought a second hand one why would I look?

The thing is when the pound gets stronger would Omega drop their prices

If you are new to more expensive timepieces, I would not buy a vintage 1969-72 moonwatch. I'd buy preowned one manufactured between 2000 to 2012 with service history, hesalite face, closed caseback, on steel bracelet - simply can't go wrong. Take your time and you should get a good deal in the low two thousands. Will look more modern and just simply be newer, but still true to the moonwatch heritage.

Right, boys and girls of RAWK, some advice/suggestions please.

Started looking a while ago for watches, but didn't close the deal.  So I'm back again.

I'm looking for a mechanical watch.
My requirements are:
- Everyday watch (well, a fancy everyday one).
- New  (as much as a 1958 Seamaster might be interesting, I'm not buying as an investment)
- Chronograph, if possible (not a dealbreaker)
- Metal strap preferable but not a dealbreaker. (Not really interested in changing out a leather strap every 12-18 months, but if the replacements are not expensive I can live with it)
- Price range £1000- 1500.  (But I'm in the Eurozone so the sterling/euro rate is in my favour)
- Medium size (I've a small wrist.)
- Classic rather than modern or fashion

Throw me out some suggestions, folks.  Been thinking of Longines or Junghans or something like that.

My first Automatic was an Oris. That one is not in production anymore but Oris make really nice Automatic watches at reasonable prices.

Their divers watches are nice imo. The new Sixty five collection comes with leather, rubber and stainless steel straps. Have a look here: https://www.oris.ch/en/collection/oris-divers

Good luck!  :wave

There is one with a black dial too which you may prefer.

Birthday coming up and having recently passed some exams I decided to treat myself on a new watch. It arrived yesterday - the Nomos Club Timeless II Edition.

It's a limited edition of the Nomos Club. There were only 100 pieces made and I managed to snap up a three month old version on Thursday  (#2/100).

The Time Edition varies from the standard club in a few ways.

Firstly, it has a larger case diameter. The standard Club is a small (by today's standards) 36mm but the Timeless Edition gains an extra 2.5mm, coming in at 38.5mm. The watch doesn't wear small, however, due to the lugs which come in at nearly a 5cm lug-to-lug length.

Secondly, and perhaps most strikingly, is the dial. The standard Club is a pearly white dial (with the Dunkel version coming in a grey colour). The Timeless Edition comes in a beautiful blue colour which, dependent on the light, shows somewhere on the spectrum between blue and a warm grey. I really like it.

The TE also differs from the standard Club via the yellow accents and sub-seconds hand. At first I was unsure about the colour as yellow is not something I'd actively seek out, but I'm so glad I went for it - it looks great in the flesh.

Finally, there's the Tron lume which looks great at night - the use of two colours is brilliant!

The exhibition case back shows off the in-house Nomos Alpha movement with their own Swing system. It's beautifully decorated with côtes de Genève and thermally blued screws.

I've only had it on my wrist for a day but I love this thing already.

I've to 2, Got a classic Rolex Datejust - gold & steel bracelet, gold face with date. Got that a few years ago.

Just got a Submarnier, 2nd hand. Went for the one without the date bubble but it pisses me off because I keep looking at my watch for the date and it's not there!

The good thing about Rolex is they hold their value, and in a lot of cases increase in value. Safe investment and nice watches :)

Dream watch would be the solid gold 18ct President day date but I havent got 9 grand to spend on a watch. Yet.
There are 2 types of posters on RAWK - Those who have an opinion and post - and those who just comment on those who post. Have an opinion - grow up.

My boss has a blue dial Portofino and it is an absolute masterpiece. Some of their watches aren't for me though, they make a lot of pilot-type watches.

I love this brand esp the pilots watches. Navy watch is probably the all time classic. One of the best watches money can buy

Lots of good ones in here
