But could young Magnus do it on a cold, wet Tuesday night in Stoke. Of course! They do have roofs and heating even in Stoke.

I started playing again a few months back. Sort of stopped playing a good few years back, and shit me am I rusty. I used to have a good few openings in my 'repertoire', going quite deeply with a few of them, but now? I almost have to learn it all again. Thankfully, I've always had a good endgame, and that hasn't been too badly affected by the drought.

The main problem for me is not making stupid mistakes. I can still see loads of good stuff I could do, but most of the games I've played in recent years I've lost because I made one stupid mistake by overlooking something completely obvious.

The main problem for me is not making stupid mistakes. I can still see loads of good stuff I could do, but most of the games I've played in recent years I've lost because I made one stupid mistake by overlooking something completely obvious.

I make the occasional blunder, we all do, but I seem to be making poorish moves, followed by another one soon after in the opening. Am ring rusty. The middle game is where I've always been quite weak, so if my openings start to collapse, I'm often in trouble. If I can eek out an endgame situation, I'm more at home. I play at chesshotel.com, which is free, and I also have the odd game on the chess.com app on the wife's phone. Lovely interface on that app... the sounds are the sounds you want when you take a piece. But you don't really learn much from blitz chess, or speed chess - but that's what I play. I learned more from going through games in the papers, solving the mate in two problems, reading stuff etc, which I did on a daily basis for years, and of course playing another human being over a proper wooden board, which you simply can't beat. Preferably with a chess clock. And a beer.

Youtube is good on chess now... lots of stuff on there. Just been enjoying these for instance:

Is Lennox Lewis any good at chess?

He was apparently. Not bad at it anyway - he got obsessed with it I seem to remember.

This morning, then a bit here and a bit there, I've been 'watching' game 9 of the Anand Carlson match. I ended up splitting screens after 2 hours to watch the actual footage with another youtube video( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa12XYa1Ols), but I reckon you could learn more in these 4 hours about chess than you could in 400 hours of playing blitz chess. The game starts after 20 mins.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/lu_NGSn1MoI?hl=en_US&amp;amp;version=3" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/lu_NGSn1MoI?hl=en_US&amp;amp;version=3</a>

I got it so you could listen and watch my embeded video (better commentary) with the actual footage of the game. It will take 4 hours out of your life, but it's great stuff.

One of the nice things about the chess.com app, is that you can review games through a computer. Not a powerful one, but instructive all the same.

So it's a Saturday night - and what do go-getters like me like to do on a Saturday night? That's right, we watch youtube videos on chess. Wanted to swot up a bit on my d4 openings, and watched one or two, and then spotted the game below.

13 year old Bobby Fischer, plays one of, if not the strongest American player at the time in Donald Byrne in 1956. It was soon dubbed the Game of The Century. Don't think I'd come across it before, but it's a piece of art. I mean it's staggering. Not just in it's inventiveness, or it's depth of thinking, but in it's vast array of beautiful threats. Fischer was famously quoted some years later, that he didn't merely want to beat an opponent, he wanted to rub their faces in the dirt, and here he is, at 13, doing that very thing. Must have crushed his elder statesman opponent.

Probably best viewed on youtube.

Came across this recent interview with Karpov. Some interesting stuff about Fischer and how Soviet Union treated chess players after losing the big match in 1972. Great read for Chess fans !

WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS MY FRIEEEEEND!  :hally

I like chess and I'm even playing competitively from time to time, but watching this is boring as fuck...

I'll nose around and try to find something a bit better. Didn't have enough time to sit down with it in the end, which I would have done happily, but agreed, I do want a bit more. When I went to see Kasparov v Kramnick all the audience had ear pieces and there were four GM's in the commentary box and it was like TMS - fantastic, and quite funny too. I remember following a big chess match years back and there was some commentary from an American dude coming out of what sounded like his bedroom - sounds of cans being opened etc - twas brilliant - so something like that. Apparantly you can watch the games in virtual reality? Might need exploring. And am hoping to find out if Mato Jelic is commentating somewhere... the only yootoober I know and like. Up yours Stampy. He's been very quiet of late tho.

But looks like a dullish Ruy Lopez in the 6th game... as football commentators lazily say... 'it's like a game of chess out there'. Tired after some lengthy draws in previous games perhaps.

3-3

Quite liked the story of Carlsen opening the competition with a Trompowsky Attack, partially inspired by Trump being elected. Even stevens... and yet to kick into life. Let's hope it does.

Game 7 LIVE!: Karjakin plays white... 1. d4, Queens Gambit. Thinks it fair to say we're all waiting for a bit of a scrap to liven it up a bit.

Karjakin has taken 16 mins to decide on his 11th move. In the meantime... Svidler and Gustafsson, the two GM commentators are debating the merits of Lars Von Trier.

Good stuff. Commentators having a break. An apparent blunder by Carlsen a few moves ago got the excitement going for a while but he managed to work it out in the end and they are now heading into the endgame with a draw looking very likely. Was doing my nut in working all the combinations out with a board infront of me.

Commentary has been a bit more like it tonight.

Really enjoyed the commentary tonight. Much more like it with Svidler and Gustaffson - some good laughs. Svidler is a well known name to me (tho never knew he wore an ear-ring), never heard of Gustaffson till tonight, but a good combo and they commentate together for the next game... tomorrow?

Anyway... another draw. 3.5 - 3.5. I love the chess world.

Yeah.. Svidler with the beard. I think the pair of them are superb ;D Svidler is a well renowned GM - Gustaffson is a jobbing one, and is often quite self deprecating about it. And Svidler, born in Leningrad... HUGE cricket fan. Lovely.

Gustafsson does come across like one of the "cool" guys. Svidler seems more like your typical nerdy chess player who is kind of weird.

I play chess on a very, very low level from time to time and most guys are like Svidler (even the young ones). Almost none are like Gustafsson and me... ;)
