What a group of c*nts eh?

Something we really do not need at the minute. Just been phoned by work, have to go in tonight because of this; looks pretty bad, very worried voices all around I'm hearing.

Read a message from a colleague on Facebook (which has since been deleted), said that they couldn't access the patient records system, then tried to use another system, which went down, then everything just logged out and shut down.

Might not be, but trusts are bricking it as the media have jumped all over this; expect a political narrative to follow. Lot of trusts will just down tools anyway.

Speaking to a friend, their trust just shut down it's network just in case.

Trouble is that no one seems to take this kind of thing seriously even with other attacks on the NHS before.

Jeremy warned this morning that the biggest threat to the UK was Cyber attacks and last week Emily Thornberry said the same thing and it was just twisted into a anti Trident story by the media.

Money needs to be spent who ever is in government. what if next time its train signals, traffic lights or Air Traffic control.

£206 at today's exchange rate.

They will set it at just the right level that they think people will choose to pay. This is getting sent to thousands and thousands of people, you only need a small percentage to choose to pay to start making a tidy sum

If you set it too high, no one will pay. I think the low amount is another indication that the attack isn't targeted, it's just random.

If the NHS don't have offline backups and a disaster recovery plan for this type of situation then that is spectacularly incompetent in this day and age and heads will have to roll.

Could be to do with how it is spreading - if one user caught in in NHS England, it might then spread for example by emailing the global address book of the user, which might just be NHS England (just one example, I've no idea how the NHS systems are set up).

I had a ransomware attack on my computer this afternoon. I clicked on a Facebook link; it looked legit: it said it was about 10 broken Tory promises on one of the big news sites.

The moment I clicked it, everything froze and I got the "your files have been encrypted, this is how you pay" message. I clicked nothing, just pulled the plug out in seconds. When I turned it on again with all fingers crossed, Windows re-started normally and everything seems ok. But if I'd been running off a server I suspect I'd have been in trouble deep.

I wonder if any NHS computers have access to Facebook?

NHS Digital and the 111 service will be the organisations who suffer through this. In reality, patients should be safe as most patient records are backed up - hospitals can get patient records through a number of mechanisms and GPs and HCs will/should have plans in place or have some way of getting patient meds to patients. Most hospitals still have paper-based records within their grounds or on an external location, which could easily be faxed or relayed over the phone.

The thing is, is that, most trusts will just shut up shop on their systems until NHS Digital give them the all clear.

I know that it is utterly despicable, but what will be more despicable will be the knock-on bellends using this to further their interests. Individual trusts will use this to levy more money from central government, which is fine and all, but with some certain trusts having pretty much total control over their own budgets, they could simply employ nearly any company they wish to update their systems.

Safe to say, there will be small-scale computer security companies rubbing their hands together at this moment in time in the prospect of getting a slice.

We'll see I guess... but it is looking as though there may have been the odd numpty who has logged into their personal e-mail on a trust terminal and downloaded this exploit thinking that it was legit - most trusts have a spam filter for their in-house emailing system... Whether this exploit got around that is another matter, but they're usually quite good at seeing spam patterns across the board.
