But to the point in question: When we held out for Van Dijk (and I personally thought it would never happen) there were some (me one of them) that questioned that wisdom, especially the way that the whole saga was "handled" (molested would be more apt)

Now look - we've got a team of some of the best players around with him as probably the beacon of them all and the very definition of good things come to those that wait! What. A. Player. More to the point, what a man. Klopp just has this knack of recognising personalities and bringing the best out of everyone, not just on the pitch, but off it as well. Virg was obviously one that had that sort of personality but it just goes to show how much people focus on the negatives and how anyone can be unfairly tarred. VVD was pilloried over the years for being hard to deal with, harsh personality, egotistical ,etc whatever the descriptions were, they were not complimentary. These guys are people first, footballers second and when you see things like this, you can't help but swell with pride that this guy plays for us. And he's pretty decent as well to boot...

Feel free to add another £10 million onto that 75.  8)

Honestly right now he's the best defender in Europe imo and i think the club wouldn't consider selling him for another 100m on top of that 75 at present. He will lift at least one premier league trophy as captain of our club in the future and you can quote me on that. Absolute beast.

Koeman actually had no idea  ;D

"I got a note from [my assistants] Dwight Lodeweges and Kees van Wonderen," Koeman said.

"When we were 2-0 down they asked me if we should change things around and I said 'yes'.

"Next thing I knew I had the note. So I gave it to Kenny. And in the end it's fantastic that the equaliser came from the guy who was told on the note to push up front."

Great to see the Dutch finally getting back to some sort of decent team, Always have a soft spot for them in the tournaments.

VVD captaining them into a new era is also great to see.

"Since its purchase by the sheikh of Abu Dhabi, Manchester City has managed to cheat its way into the top echelon of European football and create a global, immensely profitable football empire, ignoring rules along the way. The club's newfound glory is rooted in lies."

To be fair we have tried that before but he didn't finish his chances. It's a decent tactic if he can continue to develop his shooting skills - might score a few more for us which we need as we lack goals from defence/midfield.

I don’t think anyone’s arsed about the Salford connection. Besides, most will associate it with The Pogues.

Speaking of which, Navigator still needs to be done for Naby Keita.

Virgil. I think he's a level above every defender I've watched at Liverpool.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

Has to be Sami...... big Virg has been here less than a year!
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

Yeah, Sami’s impact can’t be underestimated. We were a soft touch st the back for years. We originally fairly solid under Evans with a back three but towards the end and in Hoillier’s first half season inchargw we were a very soft touch. Felt like we’d concede any time the ball was lumped in our box and Sami sorted that out almost overnight. He didn’t even have Henchoz alongside him at the very beginning yet still shored things up.

Virgil is definitely more talented and has a higher ceiling (you have to at that height) and you’d hope will go on to achieve more but that’s probably a conversation to be had again in a few years time.

Sami or Virgil?

VvD is a better all round player than Hyypia was. He has a higher ceiling by virtue of his pace.

However, Hyypia was brilliant for us in his 1st 3 or 4 seasons. For years before we had a really soft centre and could be got at from set pieces or by physical forwards. Just look at what Duncan Ferguson did to our defence in the late 90's. That completely changed when Hyypia joined (as well as Henchoz). He was so dominant in the air, so able to handle the physical forward that we negated one of the biggest threats teams had against us. He was decent on the ball, had great positioning that masked his lack of pace (even when playing a higher line under Rafa) and he was a goal threat in the oppositions box.

If VvD can put back to back seasons together then he'll be comparable and could even surpass Big Sami. The other thing is that Sami contributed massively to us winning trophies. He has a much bigger legacy than VvD currently. Trophies won is difficult one to hold against VvD. It's not the major determinant on a player's ability. However, it does matter, to some degree, when comparing a current player of comparable ability to a legend of our past.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

Not yet though.  Time will tell.

Was going to post this.
Only thing I'd add is that it was a testament to Hyypia's brilliance that he only used to get exposed for pace about once or twice a season. What he's then do was take out the attacker and then try to grin his way out of it with the ref.

If you think about the rare occasions VvD has to use his pace and the rare occasions that Hyypia's lack of pace was exposed what we have are 2 exceptional readers of the game.

VVD is great and that but has to win things before we can compare him to Sami, who is one  of my all
Time heroes. As nick put it, you forget how bad we were at the back before sami. He won incredible trophies, scored goals in our European runs and played in a part in some impressive defensive records under houllier and Rafa

VvD has had a great impact on our defence. But I think Hyypia's impact was bigger. We were atrocious at defending in the pre-Hyypia, 90's era.

Like I said I think VvD is potentially the better player. I think he's had a great impact on our team and defence by the virtue of the fact that's he's one of the top few defenders in the World.
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

It's a wonderful debate to have, and its great that that the players mentioned are just so good there is no real wrong answer.
I didnt see much of Hansen, Sami was one of my favourite ever players and I had the pleasure of meeting him, absolute gentleman an all. For me though the impact Van Dijk has had is just scary. The whole defensive ability of the team has just rocketed since he came in.
There's a calmness across the pitch now and I haven't heard the annoying phrase "we can't manage a game" in ages.
I don't care if he's been here 1 year or 10 years - he is the best defender I have ever seen play for us and our most important player by a country mile.
Tell you something I'd have bloody loved to see, came to me yesterday when he retired. An on form Drogba v an on form Van Dijk - that would just be something that could only be shown after 11pm on the +900 channels
